NFL Thread 2014-2015

I see your point but even with Suh Dallas will destroy Lions. Dallas have a better defence, OL, and more offensive weapons.

Somehow, Suh's ban has been reduced to just a fine. He gets to play this week :wenger:

Hes considered a first time offender

A joke that hes playing.

Doug Marrone might take up the Jets HC position. So sad for the Bills. No HC, no 1st Round pick, CJ Spiller, Brandon Spikes, Jerry Hughes hitting FA.

They changed their offense to establish a run game after losing in St. Louis. What do you notice about this picture?

Except that Manning still threw the ball 31 times per game, on average. Balance yes, run first no. In the midst of a run vs average teams, he was mediocre.

Guessing the new owners fecked up contract negotiations and someone sent him an offer. No idea why he would pick jets right now. Perhaps new owners showed signs of being clueless.

Actually no, the league suspended him. Appeals are made to an independent arbitrator jointly appointed by the league and the player's union, which was a recent change in the cba if I recall correctly.
I know. But if this was still the regular season he'd have still had the suspension.

Rose bowl day. Been waiting for this. :D

PS : Is there a dedicated college football thread ?

Yes, and no one really cared enough to post. No posts since late November.

I don't much care for NCAA sports unless Texas is doing well. I may watch the playoff format, and I usually will watch the national title game, or parts of it dependent on who is playing.

I've watched a little of this Auburn Wisconsin and it seems like the running backs basically have free reign.

Interesting article on why it's pointless to compare QB stats from different eras.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/page...s-quarterbacks-devalued-era-favoring-offenses

It's a premise worth delving into but the writer doesn't have the ability to do it.

It's not pointless to compare across eras, it just can't be done well with raw stats. You need to adjust for era, like baseball stats do easily.

100*((YPA/lgYPA)-1)

Which would give you a number that shows how much more or less YPA that QB had compared to league average. 100 would be exactly league average. 115 would be 15% better and 75 would be 25% worse and so on.

That can be done by anyone with an excel sheet for all sorts of stats. That kind of evaluation accounts for changes in rules or spread offenses or hurry up or better field conditions and so on.

The article fell apart when it brought up Namath. I think everyone knows my opinion of Eli so when I say Eli is a much better QB than Namath ever was it should demonstrate how much Namath sucked. If he didn't play in New York and make a guarantee he wouldn't sniff the hall of fame. He was crap.

Bills fan are a lot like Liverpool fans hanging onto their once glorious past. Even the club sticks to its glory years too much. Having at one time brought back Marv Levy to run the front office. Now trying to bring Bill Polian back. Fans here calling for a coaching staff made up of great players from their glory days with JimKelky as head coach. Never mind kelly has zero coaching experience and that great players often make poor coaches in the NFL.

They have a glorious past? Losing 4 superbowls on the trot?
They think it is. All sort of relative. I like to remind the of the Dolphin teams that went to 3 straight but won 2 of them including going undefeated lol.

They will tell you going to 4 straight and losing them all is better than only going to 2 straight and winning both

D hasn't been Bama's strength recently. I don't even think they have the best D in their conference.

Elated about the win. Oregon will probably steamroll us, but meh

So much for the SEC hype though.

Miss St lost to an ACC team.
Auburn lost to a Big 10 team.
Alabama lost to a Big 10 team.
LSU lost to Notre Dame.

How popular is football across the pond? I know that the NFL sells out Wembley every year but has football developed a strong, passionate following in Europe?

Haha. Go Ducks!

My NFL Wild Card picks (spreads include multiple sources)
@dallas 30-20 Detroit (Dal -6.5/7) Key: Dallas O-Line vs Detroit Front Seven
@Carolina 16-13 Arizona (Car -6.5) Key: Arizona QB play
@Pittsburgh 24-17 Baltimore (Pit -3/3.5) Key: Steelers running game without Bell
Cincinnati 23-20 @Indianapolis (Ind -3/3.5/4) Key: Turnovers (which is huge in any game but Dalton and Luck are turnover prone)

I'm picking the Bengals to knock off an overrated Colts side, winning a playoff game for the first time in 24 years. Their last win was against the Raiders in the Bo Jackson injury game, if memory serves.

Until the Bell injury, the Steelers looked the most solid side entering the postseason. I had them as legitimate threats to both Denver and New England. Bell provided that extra dimension and he will be missed. I still see them as too much for Baltimore this weekend.

The Panthers shouldn't be hosting a playoff game with that record, and arguably do not deserve to be in the playoffs but these are the rules (for now). They're riding a winning streak, albeit against woeful opposition. Arizona is scraping by despite shoddy QB play and the loss of their top two QBs. This matchup could go either way but I think Arizona's fortune ends this week. Newton makes just enough plays for his club to advance.

The Game of the Week, Detroit at Dallas. I'm a homer so of course I'm picking Dallas. Stafford is 0-16 on the road in his career against winning opposition; Romo is 1-3 in the postseason (1-1 at home) but is coming off his best season to date (and his playoff stats aren't as bad as some claim/imagine). Detroit gains an advantage with Suh playing (and possibly Fairley back in, albeit in most likely limited plays). Dallas defense is average at best with virtually no pass rush (although that aspect has improved of late). The Dallas offense controls possession so much that it limits the amount of time their defense is on the field. Turnovers will be massive in this game, obviously, possibly more so than time of possession.

Detroit's front seven has taken the pressure off an average at best secondary; this should be a great matchup in the trenches with the leagues best O-Line featuring three Pro Bowl selections (one of which is a rookie). Get pressure on Romo and stop the Dallas running game, Detroit can win. However, this assuming Detroit's offense steps up after some inept performances this season, and having topped 25 points only three times this season versus Dallas having done so in their past four games and eleven times this season. Dallas ranks 2nd in red zone scoring, Detroit ranks 17th (both rankings in TDs only); Detroit's defense is 17th and Dallas ranks 27th in allowing red zone TDs.

Special teams may play a big role in this matchup as well, setting up a field position battle if both offenses are stalling. Dallas has the advantage in the kicking game, which could ultimately be a deciding factor as Bailey is nearly automatic while Detroit has struggled in the field goal department (Prater has provided a far more consistent option since his arrival). The punting games are basically equal when all factors are considered (net yards per punt and return yards allowed).

All part of the cycle, can't deny they were THE power conference for a number of years, but things change.

Well yeah. Bit still, the sense of hubris in their fanbase (especially SEC West) and the media leading upto the bowl games was quite remarkable. Conversely a lot of the Pac 12, Big 10 and Big 12 conference teams got severely underrated in the process.

Drawing interest from the 49ers and Raiders apparently.

Aaaaaaand Chip Kelly and Roseman just got a promotion each.

Howie Roseman will be elevated to the role of Executive Vice President of Football Operations and will continue directing contract negotiations, salary cap management and NFL strategic matters, while overseeing the team's medical staff, equipment staff and more.

Head coach Chip Kelly will now oversee the player personnel department. He will also lead efforts to hire a new personnel executive – a process that will begin immediately.

The doofus from Twitter also unequivocally said that DeSean Jackson getting waived was definitely not going to happen.

@Eboue

Can a player refuse to be drafted by a team ?
And what do you think about Chip Kelly, i have seen people say that he was just lucky, at Philadelphia.
