NFL Thread 2013-14

Of the 3 'All-Star' games I watch (MLB, NBA, NFL), the Pro-Bowl is by far the worst yet I still watch it every year and, unless I'm mistaken, viewing figures are strong each year too. Obviously it would be nicer if it was more competitive, but we see plenty of offense and it's a relaxed game to have before the big one next week.

Then again, the year Belichick played it a bit competitively and caused a media shit-storm, that was entertaining.

I remember he started calling time-outs when there was under a minute left to play

I just saw Chuck Pagano jumping around with Deion Sanders. Why would a coach sign up for this nonsense?

So far, they're playing with more intensity than I have seen in recent seasons.

This has been a better watch than I expected. Not going to stay up to watch the second half, but that was an entertaining and competitive half.

Yeah, Peyton Manning is great and everything, but if he's going to throw the ball around a lot against Seattle, he better be prepared to walk off with a couple big picks. And I don't really buy that whole weather benefiting certain teams, didn't help Green Bay much, for example.

Nor has it ever been an advantage to Manning, owner of an 8-11 record in games with a temperature below 40 degrees.

I think I'm rooting for Denver

Both Thomas' were on my fantasy team this year

Also, Manny Ramirez use to play for the Detroit Lions. But they gave up on him and now he is playing ceter in the Super Bowl for the number 1 offense in the league. I'm just happy that someone drafted by Matt Millen on the second day of any draft is still playing, and starting, in the NFL. Something to be proud of there Matt. One of your boys is playing for the Super Bowl

Cliff Avril is also playing though, so I guess whoever wins I'm good with. I do hate those games though. As a Detroit fan, I have the Lions and I usually have a designated playoff team. It's never a team I actually support, its not like I'm a United, Liverpool and Arsenal fan, or some bullshit like that. It's just a team I pick at the beginning of the playoffs that I hope will win. Last year it was the Ravens. I didn't celebrate when they won, but it made the game a little more interesting and enjoyable. Plus, I had a lot of money on them. This year my team was the Chiefs. It's nice to think that a team can be shit one year and great the next; it gives me hope. Plus I think Alex Smith doesn't get enough credit.

This year I don't care who wins, I'm not putting money down because I don't know who to choose. These are the games I hate; the ones where the outcome is irrelevent to me. I find the game more difficult to enjoy when I just don't care. I hate that 12th man bullshit though, so maybe its the Broncos!

What are everyone's thoughts on the pro-bowl? Personally I think its kinda pointless. I'd love to see another type of final. A league cup, or Europe League type final if you will.

HAve not watched it since I was a kid. Pointless game. No way they could have a league cup thing, it would entail the need for playing 2 games a week on short rest and given how this game already keeps a players career short due to the physical abuse it will not happen. A Europe League tyupe final, against who? Some team from the CFL, lol.

Of all the American sports that crown "World Champions" the NFL is the one league that can safely make that claim of its champion.

I hardly meant adding another competition in to the season. I meant using the pro-bowl weekend for a different type of final with 2 other teams (such as the conference game losers NE v SF), where its value is similar to the league cup or Europa league. Anything would be better than the pro-bowl.

NBA?

NBA could be another but given the large influx of European players into the NBA and that they do quite well, I was assuming that some of the teams from leagues in Europe might be able to give the NBA champs a hard time of it. But not watching European club basketball on any sort of regular basis, I may be assuming too much.

But with the NFL the only conceivable competitor would be a team from the CFL and I just don't see them being able to compete, even using CFL rules.

Though I must say while not completely erased the use of the term "World Champions" is starting to diminish some the US. The NHL champ is more likely to just be called The Stanley Cup champs or winners. You hear the term Super Bowl champ used more than World Champ for the NFL. Even in MLB calling the champs, World Series Champs (fine it is not even a World Series but we have been calling it that for over 100 years now so not likely to change at this point) as opposed to World Champs is getting more common.

Eboue told me that Seattle and Denver would make the Super Bowl ages ago.

Hope the Seahawks win.

Kraft wants to resign Edelman and Talib to the patriots roster. God I hope it happens. Don't want to lose them.

Feeky bet 20 quid at 25/1

Nice.

I'm saying 30-12 Seattle. The Seattle defense will force Manning to simplify his game and have to trust his receivers against the secondary, they will make places and score some points, but Seattle's defense will come through with some big turnovers. The Seattle offense might not be great, but it usually puts points of the board when facing a defense outside the top 10.

Need them both plus another WR and CB. Do it Bobby!!

As expected, Manning wins the MVP. I haven't watched it, but I'll guess his speech went something like this:

"I'd like to thank my teammates, my coach, my..... OMAHA!!! OMAHAAA!!!! OMAHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"

Not sure what coverage to watch tonight. C4 have fecking Colin Murray hosting which is a massive negative but obviously have Carlson who's basically the best pundit around. There's also a chance that Vernon Kay might show up on the C4 coverage though, so it's looking like Sky Sports.

Colin Murray?! Why do they drag that cnut out for the big games? Carlson and the other lad (Nate?) work well together, so why change it? Plus Murray is an annoying fecker, I hope Sherman breaks him in half.

I'll probably still watch on C4, especially if Cecil is the 'analyst' on Sky.

It's a shame Sky don't get Carlson, would be perfect.

I'm not sure if it's banter, but he tweets a bit to Cadle & Reynolds and basically makes fun of them at every chance. Unless I'm mistaken, he did work for Sky at one point.

Simpons predicted the score, I wonder if they're going to be right.

Sky bringing out Vernon fecking Kaye is enough to make me switch over. Cecil is a bit of twat also. I like the usual combo of Reynolds and that coach guy (can't for the fecking life of me remember his name)!

I watched the Frontline two-parter on concussions last night. It doesn't look good for the NFL IMO. I don't see how it can be made safer if even the minor hits can cause CTE.

Probably can never do away with concussions completely in a contact sport. But I think eventually you may find that they make the players play more upright, even fining offensive players who lower their heads. But there will always be playrs hit as they are falling. Players who are tackled and their heads stick the ground or another player. I think you may start seeing at the youth levels them moving to restricted contact or flag football to reduce the chances of head injuries there.

But overall there is some thought that the NFL has some major problems for its future. As more and more info becomes public some people are starting to not let their children play and moving them to other sports. A death on the field from a head injury could really change things for the NFL.

I also suspect that there will be growing pressure to make sure any substances that increase players size are not allowed. When you compare the sizes of players over the years the increase has to be do to more than just weight training and diet.

That struck me with the first case in the documentary of Iron Mike Webster. He was a lineman but just looked like a fairly big bloke compared to the behemoths that play that position today. Nutrition, training and drugs have advanced quicker than the game and the human body can't keep up with the punishment that gets dished out within the rules of the game.

I'd never let my kid play it if I had kids.
