NFL Thread 2013-14

I was thinking about skipping this because I have work tomorrow but Im tempted to stay up and watch it anyway to be honest.

Really looking forward to this game. Sherman can be a cnut, Pete Carroll is a cnut but my dislike for Peyton is too great, so that means I will be supporting Seattle.

I think Seattle will need to consistently get pressure on Peyton, forcing him into mistakes, if they are to win this. If Manning gets enough time in the pocket to do what he does, I don't see any other outcome than a Denver win. Wilson will also need to be much better in the pocket and make fewer circus plays if Seattle are to score enough points, plus Lynch will need to activate BeastMode all game.

It really should be a great contest between the #1 overall offense and the #1 overall defense, especially since weather doesn't appear to be as much of a problem as first feared.

I had predicted Seattle beating Denver before the season started, and I ought to stick with that but I'm changing my prediction. I'll predict Denver wins 30-24. OMAHA!!!!!!

Sweepstake for "OMAHAAA" tonight anyone?

Im going to go and say 43.

Me and my friends have decided to make a drinking night out of this special occasion. We've been split down the middle in which half are supporting Denver while the other Seahawks.

Barely watch NFL, but it's always a good watch when I do. I assume Seahawks are the favourites for this?

I have to find something orange to wear tonight ahead of supporting the Broncos :wenger:

I thought Manning comes across as a likeable guy. Is it because of Patriots allegiance?

He does seem like a decent guy. Two things though, his face is annoying, and it's made more annoying by the fact that the NFL media is trying to crown him the second coming of Tebow... I mean Jesus.

The season is from September to early feb. What do they do for the rest of the year?

Who is the favourite for tonight?

It seems to be different teams every year. There is no dominant side in the NFL. discuss

Can someone explain to me how drafts and signing big name players actually works in
US sports.

Like in basketball, could New York just go out and buy Lebron James from Miami?

Great, Bill O'Reilly will interview Obama. This should be riveting....

Phillip Phillips. Almost as epic a name as Neville Neville.

Scouting, Draft, Free Agency, Training Camp, Preseason for rest of year.

Both teams are evenly matched tonight.

Patriots are as close as it comes to a dominant team.

Anyone wishing to enter the league must enter the draft. Teams pick in draft by reverse order of record (bad teams first, good teams last). A player must play for that team for the first few years, they draft their rights. After the first contract is up, they can sign with anyone in free agency. A team can offer whatever money they want but they have a maximum number for the whole roster (salary cap).

Who is the favourite for tonight? Most pundits are saying Denver to win by 3 points or so. (And I think the gambling line is the same)

Can someone explain to me how drafts and signing big name players actually works in
US sports. Drafts are basically events where each team gets to pick from a group of players who've qualified for the NFL combine. The teams pick in order of the team with the worst regular season record to the winner of the Super Bowl.

Like in basketball, could New York just go out and buy Lebron James from Miami?I don't know how it works in the NBA, but there is a salary cap in the NFL. And teams don't buy players from each other, they trade them in exchanges for draft picks. Or they sign them in free agency if they get cut from another team, or their contract expires.

Also, why the feck is Obama being interviewed in the pre-game show? What the actual feck...

Rest, spend their money, keep fit.

Denver

There are teams who get to the playoffs pretty much every year, that is really the true indicator of dominance within divisions. Once in the playoffs, anything can happen really. It's hard for teams to stay successful over large periods due to player turnover and the socialistic system of drafting.

The draft is for players coming out of college, each team gets a draft pick in each round depending on performance in the previous year.

They'd have to trade something in return.

Live it up, count their millions, murder people, crash cars while eating pizza, charity work, pre season training and games

Denver Broncos

The draft tends to level the playing field somewhat

Can someone explain to me how drafts and signing big name players actually works in

The worst team in the nfl gets the number 1 pick in the draft, they essentially pick the best available player, everyone then picks in oder from worst to best, teams can trade players for other players and/or draft picks

More here

If they traded enough draft picks and players and miami were willing to trade, then it could happen, doesnt really work like football though, i dont know if cash can be used for a player (might be wrong there though)

Jeeez. Why do Americans ruin everything fun by introducing politics into it?

Thanks all

That's a bit mad how the worst team gets the best pick. Can the guy who gets picked turn down the offer? Say he doesn't want to live in Texas or whatever?

Thanks all

Yes, that happened with Eli Manning who was drafted by the Chargers.

They knew beforehand that he didn't want to play for them so they used it to their advantage and arranged a deal with the Giants to get Phillip Rivers and additional draft picks in return.

So does the President get interviewed every year? Cos' that's pretty annoying. Imagine David Cameron trying to hijack the FA cup with interviews about politics... why, why why... crazy Americans.

I didn't watch the pre-game stuff last year.

Well it's s good way to get everyone's attention because of the audience they know they have on a day like today. I don't remember it happening before.

yeah and then the team can trade his rights or hold onto the rights and make him sit out. It used to be that a team held the rights for a year, not sure if that is how it works.

Also back to the Lebron thing, if Lebron played out his contract with Miami he would be free to sign with whoever he wants.

I'm sure that's what they were thinking, but it's not adding anything and the interview was pretty cringe-worthy.

You know every time I watch the NFL, which is a fair bit, I can't help but think English people should not commentate or offer punditry on the game. It just sounds so wrong.

I mean there's nothing wrong with it really, but I dunno it just doesn't sound right.

Colin Murray and Vernon Kay... guess I'll have to watch Sky's coverage.

Ooooohhhhh YEAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! The build up is always pretty epic for this. Way better than how we try and big up our important games.

Can't wait!

Why do people in the UK watch this? Except* maybe, people who actually play and/or watch it all the time.

is it not the most embarrassing thing ever?
