NFL 2024 | Wild Card Weekend

When was the last big upset on a wildcard weekend?
Well now…The goalposts have been notably shifted from “blowouts” and the weekend sucking to “big upsets” after the examples from the big gap in between those two things.

Nevertheless, to answer your question I’d say a 9-8 7 seed going to the 2 seed who hadn’t lost at home since September 2022, and putting 48 points on them (they were 32 up at one point!) was a pretty big upset last year.

Before that…Titans Patriots in 2020? Titans Chiefs in…2017/18(?)

I still can't believe the Titans beat the defending champion Patriots in the wild card and the #1 seed Ravens in the divisional in 2020. Gave the Chiefs a cakewalk schedule to the Super Bowl.

7 seed Packers crushing the 2 seed Cowboys last year.

The Cowboys bottling it in the playoffs. Is that a shock?

What a game that was too. So good it seems like the Cowboys didn't recover from it this season until the very end when they had nothing to play for.
We still haven’t recovered from Romo’s fumbled snap in 2007. Last year was just a continuation like every terrible loss since the dynasty years.

Much like United haven't either.

Commanders again inviting so much pressure at vital times in their possession. This game is back and forth, Tampa looked like they had the momentum at the end of the second going in to half time and as I post that they regain it back again  The Commanders fecked that up royally.

Without replay I would have bet a week’s salary that was a neutral zone infraction, but instead it was simply the center snapping it before anyone else on offense expected it.

Great night of football. 3 entertaining games albeit all going as expected with the last one going right to the end after back and forth the whole game.

The Commanders made hard work of it and both sides guilty of too many sloppy plays and unforced errors but I'm definitely glad I stayed up for it. Just fecking gutted I'm going to miss the Lions/Commanders game next week as I'm in Birmingham for the City v Exeter City match. Wish I'd waited and gone for the FA Cup tickets for the Birmingham v Newcastle game instead on Saturday the 8th then come home for Superbowl Sunday.

*No, I'm not a Birmingham fan, my wife is so I take her to a match every now and again.

This game showed what I was saying all year: we looked much better at times than we actually were. In the end, the talent in the Packers roster gets overrated, because the team is young. But we do lack elite talent, both on offense and defense. On offense, there’s no reliable number 1 receiver. On defense it’s worse. We have no pass rush, especially from the interior. We struggle to defend the middle of the field and our corner room is a disaster, especially when Alexander is out, which happens a lot. And this comes after investing a whole lot in our pass rush and the linebacker room.
This franchise simply doesn’t know how to build a defense.

Tbf it was a very strange game. I must say that having so much NFL this season your team & your QB are ones I struggle the most to get a pulse on. Even after last night I am unsure if Love is a good QB or not.

Saw a tweet this morning that the league does a really good job to convice you that there are lots of elite QBs while in reality there are only 5-6 of them at any given moment. The fact that a lot of teams were shit as well this season leads to mediocre teams with better records than they're actually worthy of. And it usually shows in the WC round with not-so competitive games.

Ravens @ Bills is the late Sunday KO by the way, 11:30pm UK time. Texans get the early Saturday window which they've had for every year since 2016 it seems, and Commanders @ Lions is on Saturday night. Makes sense that the winner of Vikings @ Rams isn't placed on Saturday since they're still playing tonight.

Love is inconsistent. But he also suffers from a bad group of receivers, who have the most drops in the league, I believe. So I find it very difficult to judge him. But he has talent and immense upside.

Even though they performed somewhat, I still maintain that defense is our bigger issue. We still have no reliable pass rush, especially when it matters. We have invested a lot of draft capital and money with shockingly little return into this unit. Same with the secondary. The safeties are good, but other than Alexander, who misses many games, we have no reliable corner. Despite huge investment into the position group those last years.
On offense, a single reliable receiver could already make a huge difference. But the defense needs a lot of work.

I believe Jayden Reed can be that guy - doesn’t get a lot of targets though and if he does they’re often gimmicky designed plays specifically for him.
