NFL 2023

Well that was rough to wake up to, absolutely crapping the bed vs the Ravens. So many players didn’t turn up, and the coaching looked terrible on the “highlights”

Well that's not a convincing win for the Ravens at all, IMO. Ordinarily I'd say going on the road to San Fran and getting a win is tough anytime, but the Ravens were gifted that by Purdy.

I still don't think Lamar is playing MVP type football, he's just too inconsistent and I still don't trust him to pull out a big performance when needed, that defence is really lights out though.

Dunno. It's probably just my pessimism, but I just see them wilting in the playoffs again.

Sorry but that’s insane, beating such a good team by 2 scores on the road is a fantastic win. Purdy was 1/2 to win MVP till this game so to get him to make so many mistakes is a credit to the defence. Anything can happen in the playoffs but beat Miami next week and you have the 1 seed & you will be favourites till the superbowl

It probably is insane, but I've been pessimistic about the Ravens for a good few seasons now and as much as I have loved a lot of what Lamar has done for the team I still don't fully trust him throwing to win the game in the playoffs. Granted he does look more reliable this season with the better receiving options he has so I should perhaps have more faith.

I remember that game against the Dolphins in his second or third season, he just unleashed bombs all over them and it was a sight to behold. I thought he'd arrived as a passer but it was a bit of a false dawn. I'll be honest a couple of decades as a ravens fan and the QBs we've seen, it's hard to ever really trust someone throwing to win a game.

Two birds with one stone, the Niners lose and hopefully this ends the Purdy for MVP talk once and for all - although Lamar wasn't as good as I'd liked him to be himself.

Niners still the team to beat in the NFC imo. Would be nice if the Ravens get homefield throughout the playoffs, I'd love to see Lamar in the Super Bowl.

Fins @ Ravens at 1pm next week  Just a shame it's on NYE.

Hard to believe that we are still in good position to win NFC east. This team is gone

Even if they somehow fluke their way to the 1 seed, they're going nowhere in the playoffs. Any team on the verge of making the playoffs could smack this defense around with ease.

Looks like players are now chewing out the coaches. Reddick was furious at someone on the sideline during that final drive. I didn't see it but reportedly Devonta Smith was barking at Sirianni and Brian Johnson. I did see Sirianni in heated arguments with his coaches a couple of times towards the end too.

They have too many problems that can't be fixed in two weeks.

Well at least we get to play 1pm on a Sunday next week, we have played 1 of these since week 5

I'm still not sold on Brock at all and last night just doesn't help that.

Take him out of the system he is playing in and for me he is really average.

The rest of the team is Superbowl material but they are certainly beatable.

I still feel it's wide open and have a feeling it will be an AFC winner

If Dak "blew" his MVP chances against the Bills what does that last night mean for Purdy? Dreadful stuff.

feck the “it has to be a QB” nonsense, CMC is the MVP.
If anything last night's game showed exactly why it SHOULDN'T be CMC. He balled out (once again) but they still got smacked in the face and could barely get going offensively because their QB threw INT after INT. A RB has too little influence on the outcome of the game, especially if he's let down by his QB. If he really was that valuable to his team he would've kept the Niners in it despite Purdy's performance.

Going by the actual name of the award it simply cannot be CMC no matter how good he is. If we're talking best overall player relative to position, he certainly has a case. Should be a shoe-in for OPOY. But he should be not be in the MVP convo. He isn't better right now than he was in Carolina, he's just in a better system. And he was never in the convo back there either.

Yeah i feel it should be a quarterback for the influence they have on a game.

Lamar must be the favourite right now

How was that not convincing? They fecking smashed them.

Doesn't mean anything will translate to thr playoffs but that's as convincing as you can get.

Tua is now third favorite per ESPN and if he puts on a show plus win against Baltimore he probably moves to top favorite bar a meltdown against Buffalo in the final week.

Lamar is the betting favorite according the ESPN. It should still be wide open with McCaffrey, Tua, Jackson, Allen, and Dak in the mix, the last two should not be discounted based on actual performances versus team results although Allen's turnovers should cost him. Also feel Goff should be considered if Detroit somehow finish top seed and he continues to play well.

one of the weirdest posts I’ve seen in 15 years of posting in Redcafe NFL threads. Beating what was widely considered the best team in the league at home, giving their MVP candidate QB an absolute nightmare game to the point it’s removed him from being an MVP candidate and you aren’t convinced?

I think you have to give the Ravens defence a lot of credit for putting Purdy in positions to make mistakes. It’s unjust I think to simply say that the Ravens won because Purdy had a bad day without acknowledging how well the Ravens did to cause that performance.

The league is as open as I can recall. There really are a large number of teams who can put together some form who could go all the way. I don’t think there’s one truly stand out team who you’d back comfortably at the moment.

Crazy that we are on course for Rams vs Niners in week 18 with Rams needing a win to make the playoffs & Niners needing a win for the 1 seed. Could be wild

There’s always a few week 18 games (or 17 in the past!) which are basically play off games or games with significant seeding implications. It’s great they schedule the last week to be divisional games.

Yeah but what have they done today after the game? Nothing, It's just but good enough

This is the NFL's wet dream, that it's happening this late in the season.

I was looking at some kicking numbers and the level seems so much higher now. There are 13 kickers right now with over 90% on FG. Surprised to see that Tucker isn't one of them. 20 kickers have made a 55 yard or more field goal this season. Tucker again has a best of 50 this season

We haven't had great protection all year. He's had a couple blocked from memory. Something we need to look it.

Feck him but I'm glad for him. He was getting clowned by everyone. The Saints went all in and paid Carr top dollar, while the Bucs took the cheap route. Baker is now on the verge of guiding his team to the playoffs while the Saints are staring at yet another crossroads offseason with an ownership that just refuses to do even a soft rebuild. I already know how the offseason is going to go. They'll restructure a couple of guys, cut/trade/sacrifice one high earner, keep all the coaching the staff and then pretend to to be shocked when the team goes 7-10 or 5-12 next season.

Oh boy... sources though, we shall see if these sources are legit.

Broncos to bench Russell Wilson for Week 17 game, sources say

The Denver Broncos will bench Russell Wilson in their Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Chargers in a move that increases their financial flexibility this upcoming offseason, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Broncos coach Sean Payton informed the team Wednesday that Jarrett Stidham will start at quarterback against the Chargers instead of Wilson, sources told Schefter.

Wilson already will make $39 million guaranteed in 2024, but he has an additional $37 million that would become guaranteed if he can't pass a physical by early March.

The Broncos (7-8) still have an outside chance at the postseason but have lost three of their last four games.

Found these tweets interesting:

I’ve moaned on here repeatedly about the playcalling, especially on third downs, it does seem like Payton has been holding Russ back.

Regardless, though, if there’s a way to move on at QB I think they’ll take it, but the cost is going to be ludicrous.

Can I interest you in a lovely Derek Carr?

So if I’m reading this right, it gives Denver more flexibility to part ways because an injury triggers guaranteed money.

Which means they’re seriously considering it.

So…he’s basically done there?

It’s definitely on the cards, I guess barring some kind of renegotiation but that seems unlikely?

$85m dead cap if we release him

That's a ton of dead cap money to carry. I can't see a team willing to trade for him unless Denver is willing to eat some money off that deal because I cannot see Wilson lowering/redoing his contract. I suppose he could/would in the right setup. Maybe they do release him and use 2024 as a wash year, find a reasonably priced vet (Flacco?), and see if they hit the crapshoot in 2024 knowing 2025 is the goal.

How about a Daniel Jones for Russell Wilson straight up? Who else is out there?
Fields? Guess that depends on who's coaching Chicago next season.
Cousins? If he's willing to take a very cap friendly deal coming off an injury but presume it would be incentive laden.
Howell? If Washington fancy a QB high in the draft perhaps Howell is available.

Don’t you put that evil on me. If Payton wants to retry his hand at a running QB he can trade up for Jayden Daniels.
