I think as someone else posted I think, you’d almost be less concerned if he’d just stayed down post the hit. The fact he got up and collapsed immediately in my view flags the enormity of the situation.

One thing I was curious about. I assume they have emergency staff available to hand at these games. Is there a particular reason they didn’t rush him to hospital faster than they did? I assume it’s because what he needed to was already available but I was interested.
Well put regarding the collapse.

The CPR lasted ten minutes & it was begun a couple of minutes after the collapse. How long after that was it when the ambulance was brought onto the field?

Think I read on BBC it was 30 minutes but not clear if that was when they left for the hospital or when it arrived. If it’s when it left I suppose it makes sense as they need to be careful in moving him onto the ambulance and all that.

Yeah that was me. I’m with Calodo in having Earnhardt flashbacks. Anyways, this guy sounds like he knows what he’s talking about…?

Would be interesting to get some of the Caf medical professionals to opine on the goings on last night.

But as I type this the only one I can remember is @Pogue Mahone.

This ever happened before in the NFL or any of the other big American sports? Do people expect the game to be called off?

Can't recall on-field incident but Reggie Lewis (Boston Celtics) died in the off-season playing a pickup game.

Hank Gathers suffered a similar fate during an NCAA game in the early 90s.

Clint Malarchuk nearly died in an NHL game after his neck was slashed in a freak collision but staff managed to get him to the hospital in time.

Don't think the Gathers or Malarchuk games were called off, were they?

That was my first thought after seeing the collapse, LMU & Hank Gathers.

That’s helpful. Having pondered, in some ways, it makes sense. Not to be blunt but if your heart stops, the only real option you have in play is to get it going again. You’re not making it to hospital in time if you can’t get it going and so action there is best and you will have already to hand all the equipment you’ll ever have within the timeframes in question. So makes sense to resolve that issue there, then once that’s resolved, work on getting him to hospital as soon as possible to have the best equipment and resources and experience available to take next steps.

On the other hand, couldn’t everything they did be done on the move to hospital? Maybe the time it would take to move and set him in the ambulance isn’t worth the benefit in these circumstances.

That was my first thought after seeing the collapse, LMU & Hank Gathers.

Gathers game was canceled and WCC canceled rest of tournament.

Fun fact: LMU is my alma mater and I was in Gersten Pavilion the night the Gathers family came back for the first time after both sides (family and school) reconciled. Emotional night.

I remember those fun games between UNLV & LMU back in the late 80s & early 90s. Absolute chaos on the court. An offense lover's dream.

Didn't realize it happened during the conference tourney.

Respect to Zac Taylor, seems like he was one of the more level-headed persons around and actually went over to the Bills sideline to discuss a stoppage of the game.

@Arruda is also a doctor / medic in a hospital if I'm not mistaken. Not sure about any others, but it does look like they did everything how it's supposed to be done. As I saw one doctor state on Twitter, apart from a hospital, there is probably not a "better place" to collapse than an NFL field, one would imagine...

It’s incredible that the decision to continue or not was even in discussion. Respect to Zac, but he did what pretty much most sane human beings would have done. It’s really disappointing if NFL head office was pushing for the game to continue. It’s a decision that Zac, or any of the people on the field, should have had to make. It’s unfair for everyone on the field; medics, players, and coaches in particular.

It’s a physical sport, and the unfortunate nature of it means that there’s always a risk of something traumatic happening. But this was pretty unique even in that context.

I read quotes from a senior NFL official on CBC (forgot his name, but it's an executive and an ex-player), who claims the NFL never suggested the game should be resumed, and that ESPN's claim that teams were given a five-minute warm-up notice was false.

For what it's worth.

I think the 5 minute thing is most likely just what happens in any long stoppage, they were nowhere even close to restarting the game

I hope that’s true, thanks!

It seems incredible to us but we should know by know that the NFL (just like the UEFA with Eriksen, really) doesn't really care about all that. The first thing that probably enters their minds is insurance companies, betting companies, broadcasting rights, scheduling issues, ... It shouldn't be, but they've shown us time and time again that this is their main concern. That's why I mentioned it's great that the coaches and/or players took a stand and said "feck this, we're not playing anymore tonight". I certainly wouldn't put that "5-minute warm-up and here we go again" claim as mentioned by the broadcast beyond what the NFL would be capable of, however cruel and ridiculous it sounds. Luckily all players, coaches, fans, ... on social media have the same line of thinking that continuing that game wasn't even a question anymore. Even all of the fantasy analysts I follow on Twitter have been posting "stop asking us about fantasy implications ffs, there is an actual person with a family fightfing for his life right now".

Let's just hope he pulls through.

What do we think happens with the game: Fully cancelled/no win-loss awarded? Resumed in the next 10-15 days somehow? Perhaps a win or tie awarded to each team to avoid any change in playoff standing?

Just can't see how they can fit the game into the scheduling with week 18 looming and the playoffs starting on 14 Jan. And both Buffalo and Cincinnati presently occupy the 2nd and 3rd seeds respectively which means both would play the first playoff weekend, but both had a legit shot at the top seed with win last night and how the final weekend played out as each had a win over present top seed Kansas City. And each has a final weekend game that has big implications in the playoff picture.

I suppose the league could move the Bills and Bengals games forward a day or two, like say Friday night or Saturday, and then resume this game like Tuesday. But that risks so much by playing games in a tight window (they do this with Thursday night games) and does anyone really think Buffalo players will be mentally ready to play this Sunday let alone a day or two sooner?

A potential decision could be to push the playoffs an additional week and let these two play 14-15 Jan, scrap the off week after the conference championship games, and cancel the (stupid, pointless) Pro Bowl or move it to after the Super Bowl like olden times.

Peter King said essentially the same.

They won't want to change too much imo and will try to push for the most convenient route, which might be something like play this game as an additional TNF, push the Bengals, Bills (and potentially Chiefs) games back to Tuesday next week, and let the two of those three teams playing on WC weekend play on Monday instead of Saturday or Sunday. Basically just try to push a few games forward in time and fit in this Week 17 game before Week 18 kicks off.

That would be the "most clean" solution, but of course that goes entirely out of the window if the Bills (and/or Bengals) don't want to play that soon again (which of course would be understandable). I doubt there is currently anything football-related on their minds, before they know 100% that their teammate/colleague is going to pull through. They can't play again while his life is still hanging in the balance imo, it'd be a farce if they were made to.

If putting the first round of wild card games back a week is off then I can't imagine either team would want to restart this game if it doesn't happen within the next 2 days (and I doubt the Bills would want to do that anyway). It would be unfair on the Bengals who realistically have a very small chance of getting the #1 to play 2 regular season games and their wildcard within 11 days. Also unfair on the Bills for obvious reasons. It leaves a bad taste for KC to essentially be given the #1 in these circumstances, especially considering both the Bills and the Bengals beat us in the regular season, but what other alternative is there if they can't get this game rescheduled in the next 2 days?

Also if they rule this game as cancelled then the Ravens won't be able to win the division even if they beat the Bengals in their final game due to the Bengals winning % being greater due to the 16 games played. A lot of headaches for the NFL if they can't get the game rescheduled.

Wow, listening to NFL on XM & a team doctor is describing how the emergency plans are drawn up, trained on, & executed by all parties involved. Gotta give props to the NFL for having such thorough plans & having the first responders trained up.

That’s interesting. I can’t see how they can resume it without altering the wild card weekend, then?
It could make their decision easier if the Chiefs lose and the Bengals beat the Raiders. I'd be surprised if they don't announce what they intend to do before the weekend though..

Are we through the looking glass?

Just watched the clip, it's not even Alex Jones talking, it's some other guy. And he even says if it's found he's double vaxxed, did that hurt the Cpr chances. They're only saying it because he took a direct shot to the heart. If he fell without they hit they would have definitely furthered the anti vax stupidity. Let's not give them credit

I’m struggling to work out how they’ll play this game.

Schedule is tight enough as it is and the Bills have a terrible injury list, they could really do without loading the players with 2 games in short duration.

Does the game need to be played? Both teams are already in the playoffs having won their respective divisions.
It doesn’t NEED to be played, but there are consequences. If they null it or tie it, it impacts seeding - especially the 1st seed which would most likely end up with the Chiefs and could also have consequences on the AFC North divisional winner.
