That was actually a pretty good letter despite tenuous accusations of retiring like a prick. Not mentioning the Pats though

Despite plenty thinking he is a prick, he’s actually not to be fair. He’s definitely weird (the lips kissing thing is butters), but my personal view is he gets too much stick for things which I don’t actually think he had a huge part in (thinking about spy and deflate). I think he a bit of a victim of confirmation bias because people want to hate him and so they reinforce things which support that. That’s just my opinion though!

Far too measured & common sensical a post.

Apparently the photo he used to announce his retirement was taken during their win at Gillette Stadium this season

You have to admit the fact that he had to hang back a year just to steal all of Brees' records is a prick move

Brees can comeback, I think that he still has one year of contract.

That’s not too bad actually. Shows how fecking great he was.

It is pretty good but the mention of MJ reminded me Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, while he declined it was a very slow decline and at 41 he was still averaging 15.9 points and 7 rebounds. He could be a good comparison because he had an incredible longevity and was still very productive in his 40s.

The rings are unlikely to be broken but the passing stats will.

They're just so grossly inflated now that modern QB's will have a huge edge on his early years. Also looking at Rodgers and Brady both it's looking like it's going to be the norm for QB's to play well into their 30's if not 40's. They just don't get hit like they used to.

I don't see anyone within 15 years of Brady's stats at the moment. Mahomes may wind up in the top 5 if he remains consistent, healthy, and plays for a very long time, but he won't be able to get anywhere near Brady's numbers. Guys like Joe Burrow started off too old and in Burrow's case, he will likely have his share of injuries over the years that will prevent him from ever hitting the top 10.

I think Mahomes, if he keeps up the trajectory he's on and couples it with longevity, could quite comfortably eclipse some if not all of Brady's passing stats.

To win 7 super bowls though, will take some beating.

I mean, the guy has always said he wanted to play until 45 from like 10 years ago. So I honestly don't think Brees and his stats had anything to do with when he called it quits. I'm actually surprised he didn't play one more year so that he was actually 45 when he retired, not 44. But there ya go - "play until 45" is surprisingly quite ambiguous

Peyton Manning's last year was shocking
The decline in his arm strength was terrible. I think if Brock Osweiler was in any way an average or competent quarterback, Payton would have been sitting on the bench for that Super Bowl run. Payton had 9 TDs and 17 INTs that year

That Broncos defense was just insanely good
@Rado_N

Beeeeeeeeeeef

Edit: what happened to that NasirTimothy guy who the original beef was with? Can't tag him

My memory is blurry, but I remember him as basically the Pats version of Cam Newton without the running

Statistically, longevity for sure and a lot might depend on their salary cap issues too, especially with Mahomes' new contract kicking in next year. That, and having to replace Kelce in the not too distance future

Mahomes is averaging just under 38 TD's per season (excluding the year he sat obviously). If he kept that up for another 12-14 years he'll be there or thereabouts. I'd be shocked if he doesn't have a couple more 50+ TD seasons at least.

QB's are so much more protected and the stats are so much easier to pile up. There'll probably be another game added to the season on top of 17th which will only boost them further. The rule changes only ever benefit passing stats as that's what the league wants to see - The numbers QB's are regularly putting up now would have been unthinkable even in 2010.

Yeah. The question marks are really around how long he can do it, can he remain relatively as productive when the team goes through rebuilds, and can he stay healthy. A lot of ifs, but even with a couple down years due to any of the above, he could still eclipse Brady’s passing stats.

He wanted to go out after the SB win before he got a whiff of Brees' pending retirement. Everything that happens in the NFL revolves around me and the Saints. That's just the way it is mate. You don't have to like it but you will have to accept it.

You say it so passionately, all I can do is nod my head

I can't really remember watching any of Newton playing with the Patriots, but I remember Payton in his last year struggling to throw the ball past 10 yards. His spiral was noticeably wobbly, even more than usual, and his arm strength declined, even though I don't think he was ever actually renowned for his arm strength.

I also remember him making a number of uncharacteristically bad mistakes/reads and throwing real bad interceptions at bad times. As in, not just a lack of arm strength, but kind of like brain farts. Payton's game was always based on his head more than his arm, but in his last year, he seemed to lose a little bit of his brain as well

He was carried by the defense throughout the season and the playoffs, and I think the special teams was really important, maybe under appreciated, in the playoffs.

Best walk off final season ever stat-wise in any sport? Struggling to think of a better one.

Leak the news, deny it, keep the media focus on you over championship weekend, pick up your signing bonus, then confirm it.

A prick to the very end.

Didn’t get the bonus. That would have come due on Friday. And he would have given it all back by retiring.
