Just seen the hit on OBJ, he's one lucky bastard. That was a nasty challenge and if his studs had kept his foot in place he'd have likely ruined both his ankle and his knee. Very very lucky his boot didn't stick in the grass.

I was hoping to see some updates on the coming season with so many new posts.

Decent discussion but can surely be moved to a new thread?

Down with mega threads etc etc.
There's always room for a GoaT debate during the off/pre-season.

BTW, Randy Moss is the best WR of all time. ;)

My freaking heart jumped outta my chest when OBJ went down. Anything happens to him our chances to win it all get reduced to zero. I'm not exaggerating either - with that shit offensive line we need someone with big play potential, a guy who takes a 7 yard slant 80 yards to the house. We can't run the ball and we can't chip away with extended drives because Eli is running around as if he's being chased by jackals. One guy really does make a difference.

To be truthful even with OBJ you'll struggle. Your run game is ... well, non existent. When you run for 0 yards on 1st and 10 you know you'll be punting on a lot of drives. I'm surprised that nut was barely addressed by the Giants tbf.

Yeah I don't disagree. The Giants run game is terrible for a few reasons, but let's not mince words here, McAdoo doesn't want to develop a run-game, he believes too strongly in his passing philosophy. I mean, he comes from GB which is the only other team that literally admits, "Hey, we suck at running, let's not even try to hide it, just throw the ball Rodgers". Same mentality.

Unless the offensive line gets straightened out we'll be looking at another early exit in the wild-card or divisional rounds. You need to be able to burn the clock when you have a lead, and the lack of anything substantial on that end will derail the season.

Kinda different pushing a pass-only philosophy when you have Rodgers compared to when you have Eli ...

Frankly if he's that naive he shouldn't be there.

Not once mention, GB don't actually have a terrible running game. They ranked 20th last year - which is actually pretty good given they put it in Rodgers' hands most of the time.

Big difference between not running because you don't have to and not running cos you're shit and can't.

I never argued the contrary, I'm stating that the Pack, just like the Giants, put a premium on the passing game and don't put much thought into the run game. That much is obvious.

Giants can't run because the offensive line is terrible and the backs have no vision for finding holes and couldn't break an arm tackle from a punter. The Packers have a similar offense, but a better line and to be honest, having a damned wide receiver in Montgomery carry the ball has worked out better than Lacy, Starks, Michael, etc. Being 20th in rushing isn't wonderful - it's bottom 3rd of the league.

The big difference is certainly Rodgers. He throws less INTs than Eli and the team's ability to maintain drives allows them to tire the defense, and most importantly to the run game, vary the play-calling, enabling them to spread the ball and subsequently creating space for ball carriers up front. That's all a product of Rodgers' play. In 2016 the Packers had less rushing attempts than the Giants, yet still managed a whopping 7 points more per game.

Point being that, yes, McAdoo came from GB and inherent to his coaching philosophy he puts the run game on the back burner. GB is a bit better in the run game, but they firmly believe that they can succeed with Rodgers - with or without a half-back.

Obviously I had the Raiders beating the Patriots in the Championship game, before trouncing the Falcons in the Superbowl...
Fancy the Raiders to do well this year. What are the odds on a Patriots v Raiders championship game?

This may have already been posted on here but will fill 10 minutes for those who haven't seen it.

Really liked the site, only thing is that you have to manually select the winner of every match-up, so it's best be done one week at a time, if possible.

The Patriots are currently the favorite to win the AFC at -160, Steelers at +550, then Raiders at +700. I'd say there's a chance they meet, but as someone who really follows the NFL, the Xs and Os, and NFL betting, I'd be cautious on the Raiders this year.

Last year they won a lot of close games, often due to late game heroics, but you can't depend on that year in and year out. They were tied first in turnover differential (can't guarantee they'll be as successful in that, too) and dead last in sacks (incredible, especially because they have Mack). Their defense is very suspect and although they drafted well with Conley and Melifonwu they are certainly behind the Broncos and Chiefs as far as defense goes in that division. Oakland also plays a tough schedule which includes all of the NFC and AFC east teams.

Yeah its good to do a prediction each week. Generally get 10 or 11 right most weeks. oh and make sure you post your NFL picks here every week!!

Is there typically a picks/NFL betting thread in the general forum? If not, I'll start one before kickoff on Sept. 7

There isn't but a picks thread would be pretty awesome with scores tracked to see who gets the most correct.

But surely there's a website somewhere which allows that.

I'm sure there's someone on here who could create such a league and monitor it (buck passed to an eager volunteer!!). I'd be up for being in our own picks league though. The ESPN website have exactly this for pro's and sports journos to make their picks each week.

You really are jumping to conclusions based on 1 season. GB was rated 12th in 2015. Even in 2016 we still had Lacy (who was a top prospect and expected to be breakout season) only to have him turn up overweight. TyM is a RB who was masquerading as a WR. He's in his element and I expect GBs offence to be more balanced.

I like Montgomery a lot, I'm not trying to disparage him at all, what I'm saying is that they couldn't get great play out of Lacy or Starks, so they had to make due with Montgomery. I admire his skill yet and determination to succeed in a position that he wasn't drafted to play.

Second, I used a bit of hyperbole to spice up the thread. I was merely trying to demonstrate a connection between the Giants lackluster, not overly complex offense and that of the Packers, which was McAdoo's former employer. They run very similar schemes.

Not quite NFL though a few players did make the NFL later on... I remember hearing of this team when I was 12 years old living in nearby Fort Worth. I remember playing Carter Middle School in a junior high basketball tournament and got smashed by them. They had athletes galore.

The most noteworthy name from the 1988 Carter team was Jessie Armstead, a future all-pro OLB for the Giants. A few others made the NFL on short stints while multiple players went on to standout collegiate careers. Two D-1 recruits found their way to lengthy prison terms, such a waste.

Doubt I'm buying too. I only like playing with the Seahawks cause Russ can move but he's probably slower and less elusive this year.

I'm not gonna buy because I only play franchise mode and little changes year to year. Plenty of people already created the 2017 draft class and updated rosters. I'm good for now.

Yeah he's been great in Madden because of his speed and maybe they want to bring him back down to Earth, but in reality he's gotten himself into terrific shape this summer and probably quicker than ever.

Pats up big in the first quarter but more importantly Edelman has gone off injured :(

Hopefully it's not serious but the replay didn't look great.

Jules missing out on the first few games wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. He usually goes at 100mph from game 1 and can run out of steam by the time the crunch games arrive.

It looks like Edelman tore his acl and might be out for the season.

Edelman will be a big loss :(

You can't replace someone so reliable as Edelman, but we've got decent cover between Cooks, Hogan, Gronk, Allen, Mitchell, Amendola & the RBs who can catch. However, Mitchell's not been healthy in pre-season & I doubt Gronk can be relied upon to play every game. Will be interesting how Belichick handles this - probably means a lot of 2 TE sets with Cooks & Hogan the WRs.
