Anybody watch PTI here? ESPN's Mike Wilbon thinks Cam Newton will be as big for NFL as Jordan & Gretzky were in their respective sports. I've not seen him play and despite the interceptions, he has impressive numbers and a lot of people are excited about him. However, to suggest he will be the biggest name in the NFL is a huge statement seeing as he has only played 2 games. What does the Caf make of Newton?

Regardless of how good he plays, the negative sentiment he built up after his "career" at Auburn will likely mean he'll never be liked by anyone except fans of the team he plays for.

So Newton is going to better than Montana, Unitas, Staubach, Brady and Manning?

Not a chance. If he's half as good as them he'll be something of a player.

Furthermore, I'm pretty sure Wilbon said very similar things about Michael Vick and Vince Young when they were coming into the league.

Keyser, what do you make of the Pats defense? I can't break it down like you can but I thought there was a big difference when Chung missed a couple of series. Positives/negatives so far?

Where's Muller btw? :(

Still opportunistic and giving up a ton of yardage through the air, just like most of last year. I have to think they have a higher ceiling as the season goes on though as they simply have more talent. Hopefully after the bye there will be a better view of where they stand. I was sceptical early in the off-season regarding the change to a 4-3 but now they have gone with it I’m sure there is some natural adjustment there too. For example, Mayo on the Ryan Mathews touchdown run seemed to fill the wrong gap which was a rarity last year.

The positives so far are that two of the three elite players they have stepped up and made big plays (Mayo and Wilfork). Chung and Brown, with help stopping his release at the line, also took Gates out of the game. Anderson has shown some burst and technique and they have looked decent against the run too. Leaving Ellis in at left end with Carter shows a commitment to stopping the run first as I have not been impressed with his initial burst off the line. I thought his bull rush was a big part of Browns pick though. Good test this Sunday with Fred Jackson coming in.

On the other side injuries are piling up and the safety position lacks proven talent aside from Chung as you said, hopefully he can put his thumb in a cast and play. Barrett and Brown have been mixed so far. I like that they have more size in the back end though as opposed to the change of direction smurf types from the past. The other obvious one is that McCourty, who I consider the third elite player (maybe premature after one year in the league), has been a slight disappointment. The coaching staff obviously have a lot of confidence in him as he has been on an island at times, especially as a result of the attention Gates was getting from others. I’m not expecting Revis but think his technique has let him down at times when in a position to make a play on the ball. He will get better though as he showed how good he can be last year. Also made a great play recognising the run when in motion and taking on the fullback for Mayo’s goal line stand.

I am not sure I would class Mayo as elite as I don't think he makes enough game changing plays. Perhaps just one step below elite. I have also been a little disappointed in McCourty so far. What do you make of Haynesworth?

oh, and Hernandez and the Gronk

8.5 POUNDS of marijuana was found at the home of Cincinnati WR Jerome Simpson. Teammate Anthony Collins was at the house as well. They're basically fecked.

Pro players rarely get serious penalties for possession, but the amount of pot plus the fact that they haven't been arrested yet makes me suspect the prosecutors are making sure they can nail them for intent to distribute.

Wtf is Brady doing - 4 interceptions and still 10 mins to go . I think he had 4 all last season, sack him!

Bills finally manage to beat the Patriots. Disappointing game from Brady with the 4 picks but he'll sort himself out for next week. More concerning is the defense, another game where we gave up a lot of points and today we were 21-0 up. Hopefully Belichick can sort it out soon.

Giants with a good win in Philly, Vick picked up another injury with a broken hand.

The first two Vikings games this season have been very depressing to watch. I could have accepted them just losing, but the repeat formula of a strong first half and a terrible second is upsetting.

Every week the half time lead gets bigger and the second half collapse more painful.

Yeah, defense worrying again. Personnel has changed but results still the same. McCourty targeted and not stepping up to the challenge again.

Terrible first half, Peterson, Allen and the Vikings just dominated

Great second half, and ole man Hanson really came through...again

Jason Hanson has quietly been one of the best and most reliable kickers in the NFL. Been around for a long time, but I hardly notice him. That kind of consistency at a specialist position is always nice to have, especially for such a long time.

He has never had the chance to be a real hero in the games that really counted...the playoffs. All the great kickers are great clutch kickers and they seem to gain recognition when they do so in the most important games.

That Vikings player who got the personal foul with 0:11 to go after Minnesota returned a punt to around the Detroit 45-yard line should be cut tomorrow. He cost them a shot at the game. Instead of needing a short-pass-out-of-bounds play run to get them a good shot for Longwell (about as automatic a kicker as they come), they are backed up to their own 40-yard line and basically have to go for broke. Then the Lions win the OT coin toss and make a couple big plays an BANG...game over.

The NFL really needs to approve the one possession for each club in OT. Can you baseball fans imagine if the visiting team hit a homerun in the top half of the 10th and that's the game? It would be a sham. And the current NFL OT rule is a sham.

That pass interference call on Sergio Brown towards the end was a fecking joke.

I truly believe the Vikings would have won without the penalty. Yes, there was only 11 seconds left, but the Lions were raddled because of Backus awful, awful performance in the previous series. The crowd was into it and the Vikings had every bit of momentum. The penalty killed that, the Lions played the next play perfectly by letting the receiver catch the ball and run while running the clock out and making sure he couldn't run out of bounds.

The 4th quarter was over, the Lions won the coin toss and the momentum switched right back to the Lions and the crowd was a complete non-factor for the rest of the game. Two plays were huge; Titus Young made a great catch and Johnson made that catch on the sideline that set up the field goal.

Despite the positive result, I agree the OT rule has to change. Over 60% of the coin toss winners end up winning the game. They need to make it more like college, and make it more fair while giving teams an incentive to go for the TD.

Up and down, thought he got pressure up the middle a couple of times against Miami and drew two holding calls. He wasn’t as impressive against San Diego though, he was handled one on one most of the time and kept falling on the ground and staying there. I doubt he would have got up and raced down the field to impact the play past the LOS but going to your knees and getting pinned down is never a good look.

To go back to what we were discussing I have no idea what to make of the defense now there is three games to go off instead of two. Haha. Still creating turnovers but there was some really bad football played out there at times and it needs to get better. They are missing the interior pass rush Wright and Pryor can provide. I cant believe they left the tight end open in the end zone like that. Did you see Josh Barrett on the Fred Jackson run to the one yard line before the kneel downs? Jesus. McCourty should have just let him score, would have got another possession at least.

Bastard Cowgirls and Tony Romo to win by a couple of touchdowns tonight :(

Oh and all the fools that had the Iggles as one of the favorites this season

I hate seeing teams run out and kick a FG on 1st down too. Ugh. I don't care if it's the last play of the game but I hate seeing FGs before the 3rd or 4th down of a series. And this despite the Cowboys winning in SF last week on a 1st down FG attempt. I was hoping they'd run a play or two. If they fumble the ball then they weren't good enough to win.

I say a rule should be introduced that FGs can only be kicked on 3rd/4th down unless it's the last play of either half. Detroit should have had to run at least two offensive plays. If a dual-possession OT rule existed, Detroit would have been forced to run their offense knowing Minnesota could come back and score.

I'd also love to see FGs of less than 30 yards be ruled illegal. Make offenses have to score a TD when inside the 10-yard line.

Once again I'll have to promote my Madden house rule of no field goals in overtime. Win by safety or by touchdown. Similar to the current playoff rule, but that one is a little more complicated.

Bob Costas made a good argument a while back saying that in most cases, a goal line stand is a win for the defense. In overtime a goal line stand loses you the game. Actually nowadays you don't even get the chance to make a goal line stand because teams bring the field goal unit on as soon as they get in field goal range.

As much love as I have for kickers, I don't think an overtime game should be won by three points on a 40 yard field goal. Either an emphatic and definitive drive down the field by the offense or a great play on defense should win the game.

I think the NCAA has the right idea with overtime play. Make sure each team has a chance to score, so a coin-flip doesn't decide a winner.

While I like the NCAA's system, I hate that they start them on the opposing 25 yard line. I wish they made them start on the 50 at least. Also I'd like to see mandatory two-point conversion attempts from the very beginning of overtime.

 The Cowboys managed to avoid snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The Cowboys offense...

The Cowboys game was hilarious.... Never seen a team feck up the snap so many times.

And love the karma the two biggest talkers this season for Washington, Grossman and Hall, were involved in the plays that end up losing the game for their side. First, Hall gives up the big pass play to Bryant on third-and-forever and gets another fifteen yards tacked for face-mask penalty on the play. Boys go on to score go ahead FG with less than two minutes remaining. He's now come out and criticized the coaching staff for their defensive play calls, obviously to take the spotlight off his mouth.

Then sexy Rexy fumbles. Haha. Eat shit deadskins!
