Pete Carroll's celebrations were pathetic, you'd have thought watching that they'd won the Superbowl.

A lot was made but it was justified with good explanations, if they were good enough they wouldnt be scabs who are called up in these situations. I do feel a bit sorry for them on some calls which could go either way, but there have been some obvious ones.

I disagree in terms of the first games Sylar. I just felt that at the start of the season people (commentators in particular) were complaining about issues that were exactly the same as when the regular refs were in charge. Stuff like time delays on calls or how long it took to throw the flag which has always been an issue. There was also the irritating back story of the officials life, as in today’s official is a school teacher who has three dogs, a cat and an Aunt called Sue.

It doesn’t really matter as despite of what I thought after the first batch of games its now clear how big the problem is as a whole, especially after this weekend. I was wrong.

Pete Carroll's celebrations were pathetic, you'd have thought watching that they'd won the Superbowl.

After he bolted from USC with sanctions looming knowing his cheating had been uncovered by the NCAA, I lost all respect for him. Last night shows how much a little shit of a human being he is.

Considering how one official was already removed after pictures of him attending a Saints tailgate, I wonder if the ref signaling TD was possibly a Bears/Lions/Vikings fan.

To be honest, this is why defensive players are taught to bat/swat the ball away on jump plays. If Jennings swats it away there is no controversy.

Jerry Markbreit (former NFL ref) said it was an INT, that the ref didn't throw his hat down like he should have, the two refs should have "negotiated" before going to replay, and that Tate made an overt interference directly in the view of an official and it should have been called. He claimed that his staff had been negatively graded in the past for missing PI calls on hail mary attempts. Yes they do occur on those plays but that was as blatant a PI as I have ever seen. Markbreit said Shields probably makes a play on the ball without being shoved.

Tate does not have possession. Sticking your hand on the ball as an opposing player cradles it does not constitute possession.

Two consecutive weeks Tate has been involved in a highlighted, controversial play. Last week he attempted to decapitate Sean Lee and was rightfully fined therafter.

Hmm. The rulebook says the commissioner has the power to overturn a result per Rule 17 Section 2. I say he won't do it because he's a coward and doing so puts the league behind the power curve in its negotiations with referees.

Section 2 Extraordinarily Unfair Acts

COMMISSIONER AUTHORITY

Article 1 The Commissioner has the sole authority to investigate and take appropriate disciplinary and/or corrective measures if any club action, non-participant interference, or calamity occurs in an NFL game which he deems so extraordinarily unfair or outside the accepted tactics encountered in professional football that such action has a major effect on the result of the game.

NO CLUB PROTESTS

Article 2 The authority and measures provided for in this entire Section 2 do not constitute a protest machinery for NFL clubs to avail themselves of in the event a dispute arises over the result of a game. The investigation called for in this Section 2 will be conducted solely on the Commissioner’s initiative to review an act or occurrence that he deems so extraordinary or unfair that the result of the game in question would be inequitable to one of the participating teams. The Commissioner will not apply his authority in cases of complaints by clubs concerning judgmental errors or routine errors of omission by game officials. Games involving such complaints will continue to stand as completed.

PENALTIES FOR UNFAIR ACTS

Article 3 The Commissioner’s powers under this Section 2 include the imposition of monetary fines and draft-choice forfeitures, suspension of persons involved in unfair acts, and, if appropriate, the reversal of a game’s result or the rescheduling of a game, either from the beginning or from the point at which the extraordinary act occurred. In the event of rescheduling a game, the Commissioner will be guided by the procedures specified in Rule 17, Section 1, Articles 5 through 11, above. In all cases, the Commissioner will conduct a full investigation, including the opportunity for hearings, use of game videotape, and any other procedure he deems appropriate.

I’m one of those that loves hitting and think the games gone soft but the Tate hit was a cheap shot. His celebration made it worse as well, there is nothing macho about taking someone out like that. Lee was in pursuit from what I remember and he could have easily shoved him out of the play. I like him as a player too from what I have seen, instinctive like a Tedy Bruschi.

The Cowboys have made some great finds at LB recently (Lee, Carter, Butler, Wilber). Dame shame their O-Line is a mess. Romo will not survive the season at this rate. They have also lost a starting safety to an achilles injury (Church).

Neutral, its probably all a piece of the puzzle. Pay rises and accountability included. Its just that most of the media etc have focused on the pension issue as the most important thing. What about performance of the refs long term? The NFL Referees Association or any other Union etc are usually going to be opposed to pay based on performance but why shouldn’t they be held accountable. Is it not going to be better for the game as a whole?

The NFL wants a bigger group of officials to choose from so they can temporarily drop underperforming individuals. The NFLRA and officials obviously don’t want their per game pay to be cut due to a bad call/decision, so there two sides to it. The way refs would be judged and the criteria used to punish them in this scenario is an issue. Though as a fan its obviously frustrating that a whatever billion a year business is in this position, there are other factors at play.

I honestly think there is room for compromise on all the other issues(and the refs will compromise - they simply have to), but the big sticking point for the current group is their pension payouts.

I don't necessarily agree with them...as I said, other NFL staff have had their policies changed, why shouldn't the refs...not to mention guaranteed/defined pensions are becoming a rarity.

NFL has upheld final decision citing "simultaneous catch" (bullshit) but also stating a pass interference was missed (Tate on Shields). Hmm... so they can state a blatant PI but apparently cannot determine what constitutes simultaneous catch.

But of course they would. How dare the NFL admit refs made an incorrect call that changed the outcome of a game on a final play.

Good article.

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8422905/the-nfl-needs-end-referee-lockout-immediately

This stands out...
Why was that the official decision as opposed to the simultaneously called interception or even an incomplete pass? It seems stunning that two refs within a few yards of a play would make different calls, but when you realize that these are the same refs who bumbled their way through a series of embarrassing goal-line calls in the Washington–St. Louis game last Sunday, it's really not that much of a surprise. I nominated Wayne Elliott's crew for termination last week, and even before the shambolic final play from scrimmage, they did nothing to convince me I was being harsh. Whoever was responsible for assigning the crew that let the Rams-Skins game descend into chaos in a slot on national television in the league's loudest stadium deserves to get canned, too.

ugh! what's done is done. it won't make a huge difference in our season. we'll still win the decision. one thing though...macarthy can't wait so long to make adjustments when things aren't working. GO PACK!

NFL, regular referees agree on contract to get them back on field tonight

bye bye scabs!

The NFL and the NFL Referees Association reached a tentative agreement late Wednesday night on an eight-year collective bargaining agreement that will end the referee lockout, both sides confirmed.

The two sides are looking at text and expect to sign the deal by Thursday morning, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

There will be a regular referee union crew in Baltimore for Thursday night's Ravens-Browns game.

"Our officials will be back on the field starting tomorrow night," commissioner Roger Goodell said in a joint statment released by the NFL and NFLRA. "We appreciate the commitment of the NFLRA in working through the issues to reach this important agreement."

The NFLRA says its 121 referees have been trained on the new rules implemented last season, have already passed physicals or are prepared to pass physicals immediately.

"Our Board of Directors has unanimously approved taking this proposed CBA to the membership for a ratification vote," NFLRA president Scott Green said in the joint statement. "We are glad to be getting back on the field for this week's games."

New official game uniforms designed by Nike are "hardly an obstacle," a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

Glad they've sorted it out. Hopefully, we'll now concentrate on the players and the games themselves rather than worrying how the refs are performing.

I've heard the #26 ref that called Shields for PI late in the game when Rice was all over him, and later ruled a TD for Tate, is from the state of Washington. Mmmhmm.

Huge hit on the Browns player!!! He's out cold. Hopefully he is ok.

Edit: up and laughing. Good to see.

The Replacement Ref from the Packers/Seahawks game is still insisting he made the 100% correct call. Yes, I am sure that is why we suddenly saw the NFL and the Refs rapidly settle the dispute so soon after the game, because you got it right.

yep because the regular refs never feck it up. giants v 49ers playoffs supposed to be the A teams of officials and they fecked it up so bad the NFL apologized to the giants. pretty much a similar play big time pass interference on a botched FG. don't get your hopes up.

Touchdown Ridley!, kick is good and its 7-0 to the Patriots.

Good start. Opening drive TD and now an interception in Bills' half. Great field position for Brady.

Great interception there, hopefully another drive for a TD.

The aggression with our D is there to see. Still some question marks about the secondary but I like the aggressive style and pressure we're getting up front.

Love the look of Chandler Jones in particular too, playing very well.

Great throw by Matty Ice.

Nice punt again by the pats.

Interception!!!!

Time for Brady to get things going, the D is doing its job.

Edit:  at the commentators 'simultaneous possession' line.

What a run by Ridley there too, right through that hole made it look easy.

Hightower with a hamstring injury apparently, unknown if he is returning.

Gostowski used to be money with FGs. Offense not doing much.

Gronk fumble. Defenses on top so far.

And buffalo get the TD. 7-7.

Offense really not able to get going here at the moment, and feck it they get a TD

Yep. Not sure if its because we've lost Hernandez but the rhythm is not there with the offense. Lloyd needs to get more involved IMO.

Yep, I think losing Hernandez is a major factor in getting that current rhythm going.

fecking hell Gostowski. Misses again.
