What I meant was, he's not a United type signing. A latin World Player of the Year type. Do Maria was something similar and the minute he came, there were incessant stories of how his family hated it in Manchester etc.

I wish some of us stop wishing for us to be some copy of Real Madrid's Galacticos and actually look back at the successful signings we made, and see what type of signings they were.

In 2005/06, when Madrid bought Robinho, we brought Evra and Vidic. Who got the more out of their signings that season? Us or them?
 
I'm guessing (and this is really just a guess) that Woody is under some pressure to sign a big name, now that Di Maria, Van Persie and Falcao have gone. We've just signed huge deals with Adidas and Chevrolet, and I'm sure the money was not just to have their logos on our shirts. We're expected to play in the CL, we're expected to win big trophies, and capture the imagination of fans worldwide. And along with that comes having big names in the club. Our nett spend is apparently at 8mil. To the major sponsor, they'd be thinking "Wait a minute, I've handed you all this money to promote the club/my brand, raise your profile, and you've kept most of it instead?!?!"

But Woody has to balance these expectations with the football side of things. LvG wants the best players, while Woody wants big names. You put this two together, it means having at least one or two top stars. Right now, we almost have none. Schweinsteiger to some extent, and Rooney are the well known ones. That's why this talk of Bale, Muller and Neymar keep surfacing. Unfortunately, the biggest stars already play at the biggest clubs. So we're now literally throwing money at the biggest names on LvGs list. Neymar not a "United/LvG" type player?!?. Of course he is. Neymar, Bale, Messi, Ronaldo, Muller, Pogba etc would be literally on any managers wishlist, and on any marketing person's wishlist as well.

Problem is, Woody's got his timing all wrong. These clubs don't need to sell, can afford to turn down big money, and their biggest stars want to play for them. All well and good to pay a release clause, but the man doesn't want to leave the most glamorous and successful club today, and who can blame him? So all that's going to happen is ... Neymar will get a new contract that'll push his salary up to astronomical levels.

So in the end, Woody is still learning, and his naivety is still showing at the very high end of the transfer market. If I were him, I'd consider buying the decent and obtainable players (eg. Berahino? Draxler?) to fix the holes in the squad, give a good showing in the PL and CL, and show the money only next summer when we've restored some "Euro-cred".

Weird to use Robinho as an example, considering he turned out to be a failure at Real after all the hype. Neymar actually has justified the massive hype so far, he has been excellent for Barca, and he's still only 23.

Like I said football journos don't even give a shit about how outlandish the crap is that they write. I'm almost sure they don't even have a single out from anyone officially working for any of the clubs to back up their claims either but it just doesn't matter at this point anymore because they have stopped giving a shit about their reputation or the job in general. I bet most of them come up with this shit during a bender. It still amazes me that these people even get payed for this crap.
 
I can't understand the way this is being reported :confused: This whole story has grown from a single rumour out of (wait for it) Brazil, at the same time as Neymar is negotiating a new contract. And then Gollum Ballache decries the whole farce as a move by the Neymar camp to use us to create a position of strength in transfer negotiations and the UK National papers (bereft of real reporters now investigative journalism is carried out on the internet) write the news that United will end up red-faced in the pursuit of yet another mega-star! :devil:

That really is the main problem right there and the reason why I keep saying we need to go for the next tier of players who are on the verge of making the step up. Atm we just don't have anything but our history and a lot of money to offer to the best players in the world too bad they also already play for teams with a rich and successful history, or our noisy neighbours, and don't want to come here.

We need to take a look at the teams that are one level below us and see which players have the potential to become absolute super stars for us. Reus, de Bruyne, Griezmann those are the kind of attacking players that need to be on our list, basically those players that the majority of the other big teams are interested in as well. Of course no one can guarantee it will work out with them but at least we have a chance of getting them.
 
£240 million for Neymar but we haggle over a couple of million for £21 million Pedro...Sounds unlikely.
 
Think i'll take a backseat on this one. I almost topped myself after the Pedro saga.
 
The £240m could have some traction.

Broadly £140m to trigger the €190m release clause then £20m a year for a 5 year deal making him one of if not they highest paid player in the world.

Or put another way, the only offer that on both sides that gives us any chance of getting the player.

Good post. And I can understand Sponsors that they want to have some of the biggest Name presenting their brand. We all agree that Memphis, Darmian or Schneiderlin have been good signings but not necessarily the biggest assets when it Comes to Marketing issues. Although Memphis has the potential to be up there with the very best quite soon.

This is also a reason for Rooney being undroppable. Like it or not but he is the face of Manchester United. Like you said we have now got another big Name with Schweini and I said back then that this might be the more important reason why we got him compared to footballing reasons.

However, the Price thrown around is absurd for Neymar. We could get e.g. Reus + Griezmann + de Bruyne together.
 
Basically it's a classic case of the media looking at who's left. They've gone with the Ronaldo story and that didn't work. They've focused a lot on Bale and still will from time to time. They then looked at potential next level down players. I think they are still trying to work out who this mystery player is.

It's now a case of them finding players they haven't yet printed about. Next week it'll be Messi. They'll print that he's not happy that Barca are considering accepting a bid for Neymar or some nonsense.
 
If Woodward is actually serious about this then I like his ambition. We should be in for players like Neymar/Muller etcetera, no matter their cost. What I dont like is when he and the club are made fools of by players and agents who 'declare interest' just for the sake of getting a new contract. Neymar has no reason to want to move. Especially to a club that is far more limited in an attacking sense. Woodward should be wary, especially since the whole Ramos debacle.

Besides, we dont need him. That money could be used much more effectively. We need a proper number 9. A smart buy would be Zlatan Ibrahimovic who seems to be looking for a move. He'd be good for a season or two (à la Van Persie) while we wait for Kane to prove himself.

As outlandish as it is, I can think of plenty of reasons he'd want to join United, not to say it will happen, but to suggest he couldn't possibly have his head turned is crazy. He will be in Messi's shadow despite what he does on the pitch, he could earn more here, be the main man, see his brand rise and probably do better in regards to the D'or

This is just a clumsy attempt to distract from the Pedro fiasco. Woodward must think we are as dumb as he is (every time he goes to Spain.)
 
no Utd player will ever win the D'or playing under Van Gaal in this system. Its actually abit hilarious to suggest that if a worldie player left the best club side in the world where he features heavily, to join a side scrapping it out for a 4th spot in England who cant barely score goals and struggles to play any kind of purposeful attacking play, would make your chances of winning the D'or over Messi/Ronaldo increase?.
 
Neymar a Brazilian who is getting plaudits that he wants, that he could take over from Messi one day, is playing alongside Messi and in Spain for Barca vs coming to us in Manchester who are battling to find a way back to the top. I cant see it myself.

Just another play being linked since the Pedro deal fell flat.
 
If we entertain the idea that Neymar is coming, where would he be played? Surely Rooney needs benching if it were to happen
