Yes, but you'd hope we wouldn't repeat the same mistake of hiring a below average caretaker only to offer him the gig full time after some good results.
Frankly, I think it was fine to offer him the gig full time. If you offered me where we are now when Ole joined, I'd take it. I think the mistake was not upgrading him this past Summer after the EL final. Was apparent that he is out of his depth. The trouble is that our board only want to make riskless decisions, hence why we also keep players too long.

We ended up with Ole because the club overreacted to fluking the tie with PSG. If we had just waited till the end of the season, when we finished 6th and really tailed off after the PSG tie, Ole could have been assessed more accurately.

Everyone singing Ole at the wheel, Rio doing the Ole at the wheel on tv, Lukaku at the after match interview at PSG... what board could have resisted?

A competent board

Your white text is literally what I was going to type out!

Christ, how exactly. It was what it was , season happened as it happened. It was deemed good enough. It wasn't the PSG game. It was a case of poor judgement by the club. In our heart of hearts no one expected us to be anywhere but where we are now.

What we’re going to do - just write off the season and start again next year against Conte, Tuchel, Pep, and Klopp with… one of Ole Gunnar, Brendan Rodgers, Pochettino, or Graham Potter in charge. Exciting.

We're going to wait till PSG sack Poch, so March or April time depending on when they go out of the CL.

I suspect this too, I was listening to a podcast with some journo and he said a season or two ago the three names United were keen on were Tuchel, Nagelsmann and Pochettino.

After Mourinho, I can't really blame them for not going for Conte.

Its infuriating Tottenham are actually productive and are going to get a manager that actually wins something

We on the other hand, persist with Ole whos proven he is out of his depth and has just been battered 5-0 by our greatest rivals at home

Completely and utterly inept.

So what happens if City batter us?

We keep Ole till the summer and appoint one of Rodgers or Pochettino if he misses out on 4th place.
That would be terrible, gosh no. Enrique/Mancini probably arent coming. Ten Hag/Potters wouldnt be good options but dont see that happening.

Giving it to him at that point was maybe acceptable. The 3 year contract extension till '24 was moronic.

Yeah because maximising our potential is linked to the number of the same pointless threads we make.

Who said that? I’m saying one seems to be more of a concern for some people (number of threads) although it is meaningless.

Unpopular Opinion....- But I am Happy. Didn't want Conte.

If Spurs win PL than I LL regret this!

When Spurs have the new manager Bounce..Caf will explode!

We sit, watch until Ole's inevitable car crash that ends him getting sacked anyway, and then wonder what happened.

My feeling is lvg and mourinho have put the board off so called 'negative' managers. If they wanted him it was an easy deal. Not saying they're right or wrong but we can only hope holding out leads to an exciting option down the line. Conte may well have gone far in Europe with this team though

Conte isn’t really someone I‘m too excited by, but you’re crazy if you think Solskjaer is a better manager than he is.

I guess we’re sadly just going to have to wait and see. If Conte’s Spurs usurp us for Top 4 since I can’t see City, Chelsea or Liverpool dropping out, then Solskjaer goes the second that Top 4 is gone. No ifs or buts. No more reprieves. All lives used up. Gone. I say he goes if theres no title challenge or silverware. Scraping into 4th is still a sack.

I do not agree with that way of working by any means. I think it’s a shit way of working and shows how clueless the board is. It’s crazy to put all your eggs in the basket of one man, unless that one man is a world class manager. There’s plenty of examples around the world that it isn’t the end of the world to sack an underperforming manager during the season and get a new one who immediately gets the team looking better, Maybe one day, our clueless board will learn that.

Conte would have been a knee jerk appointment for us, it’s clear the club don’t like his style of football. I think it’s the right decision to not go for him. Ole either brings us trophies this season or he’s out, we’ll have better options as the season progresses. Might mean another write off season though unfortunately.

That would be terrible, gosh no. Enrique/Mancini probably arent coming. Ten Hag/Potters wouldnt be good options but dont see that happening.

It wouldn't be my preference, but I do think that's where we are heading, now.

Ole until May, Rodgers/Pochettino after that if Ole can't get 4th place.

They're still in the League Cup arent they? Imagine Spuds winning that and sneaking 4th ahead of us while we're all here singing Ole's at the wheel.

I don't think we were ever seriously interested in Antonio Conte so I don't think we will do anything. It's not as if they were planning to move and now that has suddenly been hijacked, we were never going there and so no response is necessary or likely to be forthcoming.

Whether that's a good or bad thing I don't know, but it's not really changed the landscape for us because the owners have to have the stomach for change before anything happens. Conte was always going to get a job.

The only thing I do hope is that we've discussed this at a senior level and we have some strategy. Not necessarily "Ole has to win X game or he's sacked" as that type of stuff is beyond stupid, but an expectation for certain achievements by a certain date, and probably something more short term than usual as we are on a concerning trend. And that a shortlist is known for future candidates if that isn't reached.

Yeah because maximising our potential is linked to the number of the same pointless threads we make.

Why does that bother you? As far as I can tell, you're not a mod - so why are you trying to moderate what threads people are posting?

We carry on with a bum as manager. A bunch of false dawns quickly followed by reality checks. Going nowhere. United DNA yada yada. and with some pundits and sections of the fanbase saying give him more time

Antonio Conte in negotiations with Spurs.

Whatever people may think of Conte, he is a world class manager. Conte‘s signature would be regarded as a massive coup for Spurs.

So what do we (Utd) do? …if anything. Here’s a few suggestions..….

Wait and see what happens until after the City game?

Contact Conte’s agents for dramatic last minute talks?

Pretend to laugh at Spurs?

Panic?

Sit on our hands and do absolutely nothing?

Other suggestions welcome.
The second option would be my choice; the board will choose the last one.

You really can't make a thread called "so what do we do know" when your username is "wilt". :)

The board will be concerned and will accept that results have not been up to the required standard, but they nevertheless have always expected bumps on the road, and are appreciative of the great job Ole has done building the squad....

Ole is going nowhere. Him surviving a 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool shows you that.
