I am at Cheltenham this week tried to ignore jim’s interview so I don’t get upset and let him spoilt my week but it’s unavoidable.

A new stadium “near old Trafford” is fecking bullshit. The theatre as it stands now can be renovated and increased to 100k easily enough if council allow it with the train line.

my first time at old Trafford was in 1992 it’s not that same stadium it was then as it is now, but the essence the feelings etc are all the same. Rebuild a new stadium know relatively what happens to the sir Alex stand what happens to sir bobbys stand, what happens to the Munich tunnel and other shrines to the disaster.

Whenever jim was trying to take over our club versus the Saudis, I was the jim’s biggest cheerleader I thought he is a red like us he knows what we want etc but he fecking isn’t. Cares about the lining of his pocket and nothing else.

I mean I’m not exactly slagging it off? Just a lot to get used to, and nothing like I expected. It’s already grown on since my initial viewing of it.

A poll of other people liking it isn’t going to suddenly make my feelings suddenly change mate

I’m not trying to make you change your mind to be fair, we can never expect everyone to love a Sydney Opera House, a Black Diamond building or a Colosseum.
However clearly lots of people do like it, and that’s probably the reason they went with a design you yourself don’t understand.

It financially makes little to no sense to renovate OT, as much as we'd all like to stay there. If it was doable and a viable option, I'm sure we'd go down that route. But it's been left to decay for far too long.

Yes. To all of this. The amount of memories I have in this stadium are cherished.

This new stadium move crushes me.
The memories aren’t going anywhere! Change is inevitable and if the new stadium looks great (which it does), generates revenue and also pays homage / due respect to our history (which it will), then I don’t see the issue. The management must do the right thing for the club first and foremost and not for sentiment / idealism sake.

Dislike it. Maybe it's the wrong but I am very first impressions with this type of things and I can't shake the feeling it looks like a condom

Weird shaped cock Kouroux?

I think it resembles a Thai temple myself like, absolutely love it; and I was against a move, always thought it would need to be beyond the norm and spectacular to convince me, which they have.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the 3 big pointy things is? Do they serve a practical purpose or are they just a cosmetic choice?

It's mainly aesthetic as mentioned by the architect, also the fact that it makes it visible from afar. One of them seems to have a viewing deck, pretty cool tbh.

Has there been anything to confirm what the thing is on the middle spire? Looks like it's a viewing platform or some sort of restaurant maybe?

Overall I really like it, stadiums now are not just the ground it's all the stuff around it and no other team in the UK will have it, or will be able to do this, look at the London clubs who are limited for space, most UK clubs are but we do have a chance to create something different.

City are kind of doing this, with a hotel and concert but can't do it from scratch like we can.

Really hope it's done in 5 years like they hope.

The 1958 had a good weekend, shame they followed it up with that thick eared press release. They may as well just say 'WE WANT QATAR AND NO CONSEQUENCES'.

I expressed my negative feelings about the new stadium design earlier (and was vilified for it), so won’t do so again. Needless to say I’m not a fan.

However, hearing Barada speak earlier, I am amazed to hear that there is no funding in place yet, and no timeline to build. As such, their whole release today was nothing more than pretty pictures… the cynic in me looks at the timing of the release, after the protest. There was nothing new or solid that happened yesterday, they just picked a day to release the design.

I heard on social media too that to make the stadium happen there needs to be infrastructure changes for freight yards near the ground (to be relocated to Warrington) that have not been approved or even discussed yet… it may be a decade before we see the stadium!

They have presented unfunded plans, arguably as a PR exercise.

The release of the info yesterday has been carefully planned for weeks. Surely you can see the effort that has gone into it - even if you don’t agree with the design.

Obviously it’s not been ‘rush-released’ as a result of the protest.

The process takes time, and huge co-ordination across many organisations. No issue with where we are with funding at the moment.

I doubt a Qatar built stadium would be any better. I'd worry about triple advertising hoardings constantly asking you to come to Qatar with the fans further back.

We've got fans close to the pitch, steep seating, none of this wallowy set back feel that many designs have.

The exterior serves a purpose for large fans areas and shelter in bad weather. Looks nice to hang around when inside, it's light and airy.

The big issue is how well you can get 90-100k in and out of there even with redevelopment or make it welcoming throughout the week with how the roads are and dual carriageways, it's hard to see many areas in the UK that can changed to be appealing in that way. I'd love to extend the current OT and replace the roof but I think it would be difficult to manage more people without huge changes, it's a struggle getting out with 73k with the narrow steps and small openings to the streets. At least moving the stadium slightly gives scope to a central position with bigger areas to disperse.

I'm betting the tent thing doesn't happen and probably the towers also.

My thoughts too. There was an earlier placeholder image of the stadium which had some of the same style glass surrounding but in a more conventional stadium size shape. I imagine we’ll get that cheaper more basic version with some covered space “to ensure the long term financial stability of the club”.

Someone sent me a whatsapp picture of Butlins with its tent like spires and the new ground image and it’s all I see now. Another one I had was a circus tent. That’s the bit I am unsure of. The other images the walk to the ground, inside the ‘tent’ and in the stand looked good. Especially as we were winning 3-0!
Think they missed a trick by not having a retractable roof.

There’s a fair amount to dislike about watching our club become less and less connected to its community and more a playground/entertainment megaplex. I’m under no illusion that we have any meaningful sense of community ownership of the club anyway, but to see how fans are going to be further sidelined, in line with the broader trends across the sport, is sad to see and hard to separate from the new stadium design.

This is perhaps too speculative, but if we had hoped that stadium fan protests could be impactful against the Glazers, they’ll be even less so in the future with a stadium that’s less reliant on fans’ match day ticket sales.
That area and community has needed a regeneration project for a long time which will bring in growth, jobs and opportunity in the area.

Why do you believe this?

This is happening, they’re just waiting on final sign off from the government on the surrounding area regeneration funds.
It looks that way yeah

I really don’t trust the Glazers though. If this loads more debt on the club then it’ll become less valuable for a while. And all they care about is money.

How about, instead of the ‘devil’s trident’ they double down on the satanic imagery by building a blood red stadium with a massive set of devil horns? I’d honestly love that

Nah, you don’t get an architect like that involved, and then ignore the entire design and make a bowl instead.. Its more likely to be very similar but small things like the sky bar on the middle tower will probably be scratched off as the project progresses

Two hopes for inside:

The away end is behind one goal, halfway along like the old scoreboard end. Spreading up to the top thru K Stand for cup matches.

The disabled section isn't behind the goal pitch side, but down one of the sides.

Access being easy from the main road will determine both but I'd rather have it like that. Best way to help generate some atmosphere.

I'd also like a dedicated juniors section set aside for under 18 members... pay as you go, get the teenagers into match going and hopefully for life. The demographic is much older these days. Kids can't afford it.

I just can’t get my head around why you would build a brand new state of the art stadium, then choose to effectively cover the bloody thing up so you can’t even see it!

Without the netting it might look good, but as it is it’s bloody awful. Looks nothing like a football stadium. Just a complete eyesore.

Once they gave it to Foster, there was always going to be some kind of giant glass net involved. He's become a big fan of them - see also:

Spire on that building is 150m, which exactly matches the two smaller spires at 'New Trafford'
