It looks quite cool, certainly see inspiration from the SoFi stadium in its design but if they can create the fan experience zones like in the images it will be pretty cool. Can’t see it only taking 5 years and 2 bil to build, surely going to cost more.

I have a funny feeling (completely anecdotal of course) that there's some middle Eastern backers in the shadows here. Something waiting to take the club from future insolvency. One of my workmates reckons that Sir Jim is just the hatchet man that's gonna take the heat for a Saudi buyer - get the stadium approved or even built, keep us just about afloat in the league, and then sell us on at a profit.

That said, a 100,000 stadium is an opportunity I could NEVER turn down as a fan, whoever runs us eventually, and we -will- fill the stadium, which is completely insane to say given how bad we are and how bad we have been, but man Utd aren't going anywhere

Without the netting it might look good, but as it is it’s bloody awful. Looks nothing like a football stadium. Just a complete eyesore.

I suspect it's there as they will likely want a pre/post match fan zones outside/around the stadium with all the food offerings etc which doesn't always work in Manchester weather.
 
Can the club please stop saying this 1 billion followers thing? It makes them sound absolutely delusional.

Are we really supposed to believe that 1 out of 8 of all living people support United.

I read somewhere that they got to the figure by adding up all the various social media followers, as though there was no crossover or bot activity.

He's 80, he's already one of the richest man in the world with control over a multinational conglomerate.

I rather not underestimate human greed but the gains here are exceedingly marginal, It just doesn't make much sense.

They've been discussed a lot. They were expected to form part of the local plan to make HS2 (new high speed train service) work for Manchester.

When HS2 got cancelled, they then became part of the plan to improve Manchester train services - taking freight traffic to the already built freight depot near Warrington that's scheduled to be expanded further to cope. That then frees up the train tracks running across Manchester town centre (that freight trains share with passenger trains) to improve local passenger services.

Agreement in principle has been around for years. Rachel Reeves said the government is planning to support infrastructure plans for South Manchester. Companies far bigger than United want it to happen and plan huge investments (and are already making some of them in anticipation) if it does.

The fact that the government hasn't hit the go button isn't for lack of discussion - it's about money. This work is now part of the big strategic plan for Manchester and should be an economic boost to the whole north west including Liverpool!

If anything, the PR job is part of telling the world that we're ready to go and that we've got big ideas. Either because Ineos know that the government is preparing to give the go ahead or because they're trying to force them to say it's delayed indefinitely.

Which remember is saying that the northern priority infrastructure project (not just United's stadium) is indefinitely delayed while southern ones (like a new runway at Heathrow and a new train route between Oxford and Cambridge) are getting the go ahead.

It could well take a decade but you have to start sometime or it doesn't happen at all.

I do think he's in it for the love of United, of course he wants to make a return on that, but he's 72 years old and could easily be sat on a beach in the south of France sipping cocktails for the rest of his life rather than getting grief from all sides.
 
Any politics needs have an idea of likelihood and time frame of the government's decision on the wider regeneration project??

Then they'll go out to Tender, it'll come in over a £1bn over budget and it'll be value engineered down to a standard bowl.

There had already been regeneration about 15-20 years ago just after moss side and hulme's had been completed in the early 2000s. There was also further work done when the BBC and media companies moved up last decade. Not sure why Old Trafford needs even more regeneration?
 
I dislike the tent! Is there a clear render of the stadium without it covering?

It’s good but I’m a little disappointed tbh, there were rumours that they were planning to have the biggest single tier stand in Europe to rival Dortmund’s yellow wall, which I hoped would be the next Stretford End but obviously that’s not the case.

We’re only in the initial phase with computer generated imagery and every oppo I’ve come across is fecking frothing at the mouth! The bitterness and jealousy is seeping out of them. Strange they’re getting so worked up over a “circus tent”.
 
Barcelona will have a bigger stadium but I think we'll have a higher average attendance.

Right now the highest average attendance in world football is River Plate and Dortmund, but I think we'll surpass them so we can legitimately say we're the biggest club in the world.

Sir Jim said in an interview that he had two main criteria: that the stadium have an intense atmosphere and that the stadium will look completely unique as many modern stadia look similar.

The canopy is a good idea as I think it'll encourage people to hang around the stadium before and after games. Right now the environment is a little uninviting.
100,000 people spending money 30+ games a season is a pretty big revenue generator. There will be concerts and other events also.

If they all spend £50 on average then that's 100,000*30*50 = 150 million.

This will encourage restaurants and bars to set up there but I still think the area will be pretty dead in between games.

Sir Jim said also it will be a fan zone for watching away games which is a good idea but I think people will just go to their local unless it's a big game maybe.
