New Left Back

Don't you think Darmian will leave (to Italy) this summer?
Even if he does so it still leaves us with 3 players who can play at LB including a 21 year old who 1 year ago was seen as the biggest full back prospect in the world. I think if Darmian leaves a new RB would be much more of a priority as it only leaves us with Valencia to cover that position.

Luke Shaw needs another season to bounce back.

He was one of the best in the league before that broken leg - and I will not accept that his injury has ruined his career based solely on his performances on his first year back.

Does Mourinho not rate Shaw or has he been poor when he's played? I don't recall him getting too many chances this season?

I agree, but I do wonder if some team in August will realize they need cover at LB, LCB and DM and that Blind could solve all problems at once and he'll think if Shaw is the man at LB, Mourinho likes athletic CBs and doesn't rate me at DM, why stay? Why not sign for that top 4 Bundesliga or Serie A side? He might even find a manager who wants him as the starting DM, LB or even LCB if he's desperate for a passer there.

I could see Shaw being the next De Bruyne or Lukaku who Mourinho decides he doesn't rate, or being the starter at LB for 10 years. In the former case I think Mourinho would add a starting LB.

So yeah, I could see Rojo backing up Shaw or the new LB and at RB, a million possibilities. Valencia will start but then either Darmian stays, Fosu-Mensah wins the backup job, we buy the RB of the future now to be the backup and learn on the job, we find a cheap veteran option Mourinho trusts, or Ashley Young wins the job.

Shaw is clearly the latest one getting the Mkhitaryan and Martial treatment. Players with top class talent but weaker mentality being set very high standards that they need to achieve and maintain to earn their spot in the side.

Jose even mentioned in his press conference that they have 4 left back options and Shaw has the ability to easily be the best if he puts the work in.

The club has invested £30m in Shaw. In Blind they have a very good alternative. It's extremely unlikely the club will buy a left back unless both Blind and Darmian leave in the summer.

Exactly what I've been thinking. It all comes down to the player, what Shaw wants. He has the skill, pace, and all the other attributes, in addition to the manager/fans/clubs backing. His attitude must be really "down in the dumps" or "i'm better than feckin Rojo and should be starting. Whichever it is he needs to recollect himself and make a man's decision on what he wants to do with his United career. He can either become a huge asset and United great, or start anew at a different club

Shaw needs to be given another go at claiming the left back position. From what Mourinho said about him, he has been working hard in training to get back into the team. He might return to the form that he displayed before his leg break.

I don't think we need a left back TBH. We've got Shaw, Blind and Rojo there. We're better off with a CB and a RB.

Rojo is a bit of a joke, as LB. As CB, he is great. I don't understand how this works, but that's what we see week in week out.
Blind is okay...but not great as LB.
Shaw is err...he doesn't actually play. He has struggled with mental and physical fitness for 2.5 seasons and this is not the sort of track record I would expect from a MUFC first teamer.

Do we need a LB?
If we want to win the league - probably not. We can use Blind.
If we want to go far in the CL - definitely.

I fully expect Shaw to come good, and we won't need a left back if he does. There are reasons separate from his talent explaining his exodus from the team. Surely it's just a matter of time before he's back.

hence they can't progress past semi finals of the CL.
I think its more than to do with their LB. Liverpool made 2 finals with the likes of Traore. The reason they cant get past the semis is
a) their 1st team as a whole isn't that great
b)standard of the premier league isn't that high
c) Real, Bayern, Barcelona have the best attacks in world football

Ricardo Rodriguez of Wolfsburg please.

This.

In case we are looking to buy left back I hope we get Ricardo Rodriguez, solid in defence and much better in crossing.

Tierney or Andy Robertson would both be great shouts.

Think Jose will sell Shaw. He doesn't have the mentality to make it here from all accounts.

Maybe it's just me, but I really like the LB, José Luis Gayá from Valencia. He's at least impressed me.

This is his game against Barcelona from 19 March:

I think Borthwick-Jackson can be a very good player and think going forward he's better than any other left back so if Shaw isn't sold then there's no need for a new left back as in a worst case scenario we'd also have Blind to play there too.

If we do buy a new left back then a young player like Sessegnon at Fulham would be a great choice but for me personally I think the most important spots are an attacking right back, a quality ball playing centre back, a defensive midfielder and a winger.

He's been a flop at the wolves so don't hold much hope he's good enough for us

I'm in the minority but I would give Shaw a chance next season. Prior to that injury, he was arguably our best player and playing up to his potential. I would like to see how he does next season with a full pre season and if he falters, Rojo has proven capable of doing fine until January 2018 window opens.

I would stick with Shaw but if we're not doing that then Benjamin Mendy is the stand-out option.
