Nemanja Vidic retires from football.

What a legend! Modern day defenders don't come any hardcore the way he was. Absolute beast mode. One of my favorite in recent era. Serbian Juggernaut!!

There were question marks over Vidic at the start, but this was the match when I realised we had a star. That tackle that led to our opening goal was a thing of beauty.

One of the finest defenders to have played for this club, thanks for the memories Vida!

A colossal defender and a transformative figure in the building of what eventually became one of our best ever defences. We had been crying out for a physical no-nonsense defender for a fair while back then. While Rio's game was maturing, we were still soft in defence, all of which changed when Vidic arrived.

Also one of my favorite United players, as highlighted by his name being part of my old email ID :D

Just realised that of all the players in this picture only Adnan is left at the club now... :(

Hope he enjoys his retirement.. What a legend he was for us!! Absolutely loved him..

The celebration after scoring that 90th minute goal against stoke!! What a spine that was,Rio vidic , Evra and VDS..

Shame he got that injury, because at that point I feel he was still the finest CB in the world.

Yep, he started to really play well near the end of that season

On a side note, how good was Rooney and what a cross by Silvestre!

I still can't get over the fact he was told to study videos of Jagielka by none other than David Moyes. I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall in that room.

Absolute legend. One of our best ever defenders. Miss him a lot. Hoping Bailly can be anywhere near as good as him for the future.

I recommend the video Nemanja Vidic - Memorable Moments on YouTube. Only missing his reaction to Evans' kick on Drogba.

I can't remember the exact quote but I remember in Fergie's book he refers to him as a dour something or other. He had a letter calling him up to the Serbian army and told Fergie he had to go and serve his time with the army for a year or two but Fergie was having none of it.

It wasn't a letter as far as I remember, he just thought he should go.

Was gonna say... how good was he? And there's people on here who say that he's only got his record because of longevity, and Rashford or Martial could do the same just as easily. My arse they could

Rooney was class back then

If he and evra were staying here for let's say 2 more years, they would probably stink the place and people might call them out and told them to move on like they do with rooney.

Funny though some people thought vidic jumped ship too quickly when we were in a bit of shit.

Legends eh?

Beast of a defender. One of the reasons we did so poorly post Fergie was the demise of Vidic and Rio. Just goes to show how important them two were to our dominance.

This part from the Sir Alex book summed him up quite nicely for me:

“Vidic was a dour, uncompromising sod. He was a proud Serb. In 2009, he came to see me to say he might be getting called up."

“What do you mean, called up?’ I said, alarmed. ‘Kosovo. I am going,’ he said. ‘It’s my duty.'”

One of the best CB of his generation. Absolute titan.

Absolute rock at the back. Legend, love him.

We used to be an amazing team :( I miss those days.

What a save by Campbell/Lauren, was it?! Tough to spot by the ref that one though. Rooney looked fantastic.

I'm from Serbia and I never understood this quote and think it's misinterpreted. I know it's coming directly from the SAF, but really can't picture Vidic being patriotic and all that. Quote might be even a joke.
He is obviously my favorite United player of all time and I'm really biased when it comes to him, but in Serbia, people are very split when talk about him. Good portion of non - Red Star Belgrade fans think that he never gave his 100% playing for the NT, that he was faking injuries to avoid national duty, and there is even some conspiracy running around WC in Germany and against Slovenia, when he missed a penalty and many people (including media) accused him of doing it deliberately. Of course, I think all of that is BS, but I kinda agree with people here that he wasn't so passionate about our NT as he was about United.
Also, as he was our captain for many years, he was often interviewed and he never looked fired or remotely interested in upcoming games for Serbia, he was very apathetic, and I have never ever seen even the smallest signs of patriotism in his pre and post-game interviews (and I like it) - And people here, unfortunately, like to listen fired up and patriotic speeches.
