Nemanja Vidic retires from football.

:( have a nice retirement Vida!

One of my favorite goal was the thumping header he scored against Benfica I think. We were down 1-0, that's the equaliser.

Rio by the end of his career was absolutely shocking with his distribution. Ball after ball played right back to the opposition.

Exactly.

Rio at his peak was great with the ball. But then he'd have days where he'd dwell on it too much or do pointless hoofballs that are overhit.

Anyway loved Vidic. One of my favourite players ever and it's ashame we don't see many defenders like him anymore.

If only our defenders could do half the job this guy did for so long. Best of luck in his life after football.

Thank you Vidic!

I think for a season when he was at his peak he was the best central defender in the world.

What a great player he was for us!

Hopefully he'll play in United shirt once more in a friendly during the summer. Van der Sar never had better defensive protection in his entire career. Who needed John Terry if you had Rio & Vida.

Thanks for everything. Part of best the period in my life was watching him play and having blood and grass in his teeth from countless collisions with oppo's attackers.

Beast of a defender. I've never seen anyone be so dominant in the air, just unreal.

He is exactly the kind of player we need at this club, ability and personality-wise.

A beast of a defender. For several seasons from 07-11 he completely removed any anxiety I'd have over crosses/long balls coming in, since they would all be inevitably headed away to safety by this man. Him and Rio was a fantastic partnership.

Aye, he was just freakishly brilliant in the air as well as being a superb overall defender. One of my favourite ever footballers without any shadow of a doubt.

Just seeing this:( Top red, absolute legend! What I wouldn't give to have another Vida now:(

Top Red

What a defender and what a signing. Exactly what we need now, a no-nonsense brilliant defender who can galvanise the rest. When you see him lunging into tackles, defending with his heart on his sleeve and winning every header, there's no way that doesn't motivate the rest of the team.

He didn't even need Rio next to him to marshall a defence, when we went through that clean sheet period, he was playing RCB with Evans next to him and for 9-10 games he was just rock solid, and literally won every ball.

If he was 25 now, I would happily pay £50-60m for him.

A loss for football, proper legend who was almost unbeatable in his prime. Hopefully he'll get a coaching role here, because it hasn't been the same without him.

One of the most uncompromising defenders you will ever. So dominant and relentless. He was an absolute machine for us.

One of our best ever defenders, a legend, and a great captain. Have a nice retirement!

This will always be one of my favorite moments in football:

What an incredible player. United's success in Fergie's latter years was built on having a top class defence and Vidic was the key man.

He could play next to Jonny Evans and in front of Tomas Kuszczak and still make the defence look formidable. He was amazingly consistent but still managed to step up with huge performances and key goals when the team needed him.

Certainly the best defender I have seen play for United and a fantastic leader.

Vidic and Ferdinand have been the best CB duo since for 3/4 years, nobody came even close. And they were characters as well. Hard to find such devoted player in modern times. All the best to Vida, pity he wasn't some fancy named Italian because I don't think he will have received as much recognition in the future as he should be.

A very important goal too in the scheme of things. We needed a result to go through, were trailing and didn't play well when on the stroke of half time Vidic thumped the ball in. Memories!

Yeah, you're right. But I think a lot of it had to do with his loss of pace and his back problems; made him a lot less confident when in possession. Doesn't change the fact that in his prime, he was an excellent ball-playing centre-half.

Just the safety net of knowing whatever was punted in was going to dealt with no bother, to be honest not seen signs of that security until Smalling has stepped up.

Nemanja was the player I most identified with in my own playing stile. I was a very tall centre half that wasn't full of pace, but read the game decently and enjoyed a challenge whether a sliding tackle or in the air.

Rio and him formed a very formidable partnership and were key in our trophy rich years.

Enjoyed watching him, particularly how much he improved. As Rio mentioned in his tribute, wasn't highly rated early on and I thought he'd maybe move on after that first half season. Glad he didn't!!!
