Nemanja Vidic retires from football.

“Vidic was a dour, uncompromising sod. He was a proud Serb. In 2009, he came to see me to say he might be getting called up."

“What do you mean, called up?’ I said, alarmed. ‘Kosovo. I am going,’ he said. ‘It’s my duty.'”

May have looked like a baddie from Inglorious Basterds but the man could defend.

Without a doubt one of United's best defenders.
Legend and I love him

Great player. Best of luck Vida.

Man knows no fear. Absolutely loved him because everytime he's out there you know he gives everything he's got. Rare breed in modern day football.

Enjoy your retirement Vida! Just saw on SSN,he has biggest win ration among players with 100 plus in United shirt or something like that.

Brown--Vidic--Ferdinand--Evra

At the peak of his powers, the world's best central defender. He came from Serbia, he feckin' murdered ya. Thank you Nemanja.

I wish I could find the interview but there's a great bit when he's talking about food in Manchester and he says something along the lines of "I never had fish and chips before coming to Manchester... I like!"

Nice video compilation of his great moments.

Excellent compilation. The leap against Bolton that I was referring to earlier is in there at the 4 minute mark, or so. Savage.

Also forgot how many goals he got for us. 15, not too shabby for a centerhalf.

"Nemanja who?" I'm sure was the reaction from most of us when we beat Liverpool to his signature in the January transfer window. During his time with us he went from strength to strength and became one of the best CBs in the history of the Premier League.

A great man on and off the pitch. I hope he can join us in some sort of capacity afterwards, whether it's in an ambassadorial role or in a coaching capacity.

Thanks for the memories, Vida.

Proper CB. Nothing like the fannies being churned out of academies now at CB.

He'll be another one the media say we never replaced.

Fecking legend.

Thanks for all the great times Nemanja, have a great retirement.

Incredible legend. Nemanja was the complete defender who showed no fear but also never went in to cripple an opponent. There was nothing short of perfection in game in his prime.

For me, Vidic is the greatest defender of the Ferguson era. The case for Stam is strong, but Vidic edges it out for me.

For all intents and purposes his career was done in Fergie's final season. He must still regret moving to Inter after a serious injury. A colossus of a defender in his prime though, we salivate at Smalling winning headers proactively but Vidic had a different breed of aggression and tenacity. He basically did it all, formed an all time great partnership with Rio and Van Der Sar, won the league 5 times including thrice in a row, won the champions league and became club captain all in a frame of 8 years. That's a phenomenal career.

Won't ever see a defender like him for a long long time...We will be lucky if we got a player that is even half the defender he was to be honest

So many good memories, but this one sums it up for me. A beast of a defender.

Just love everything about the guy. He was the first player in something like 6 years i actually wanted to go buy a shirt so i could have his name on it. Hadn't done that since i was a kid with Ruud.

Club Legend. Characterized everything a defender should be. Fearless, rock solid and driven by competition. He has his own chapter in the United history books when it comes to defending. Lucky to have seen him at the heart of the backline.

The best Serbian defender of the past two decades, and of the best ever to play in the PL

Manchester United and Sir Alex were perfect to bring the best out of him too.

Well done and so long, it will take years before a similar beast comes along

good though he was I have to ask if you saw staam or mcgrath

Stam is vastly overrated here.

I'd rather have Vidic any day of the week. Outrageously good defender. Probably the most dominant CB is the box I've ever seen.

Shocking? Get a grip. Rio was clearly superior when it came to distribution, but Vida was nowhere near shocking. He was confident with both feet and could hit some very nice long diagonal balls.

Rio by the end of his career was absolutely shocking with his distribution. Ball after ball played right back to the opposition.

Saw a stat that said he has the highest win-rate of any player to play over 100 games for us. Legend.
