Nemanja Vidic retires from football.

Best defender I've ever seen in my lifetime. Everything a fan wants their team's captain to be.

Add in that he shared the defensive line with Rio and Patrice, makes him and them only stand out more for what he and they all accomplish.

What a great piece of business too. Bought cheap, achieved everything.

Good luck captain!

Alongside Stam and Rio as best centre backs I've seen at the club, all the best and thanks.

Fantastic player, and one of my favorite United players. This celebration always brings a smile to my face:

Fantastic celebration this. Fits him so well. Fantastic player with brilliant attitude. One of Fergie's better signings.

I was looking at the picture of our 08/09 team. You realise why we had no problem winning titles. 8/9 out of the starting 11 were world class. It's sad how far we've fallen.

Monstrous. A defender we'll be telling whippersnappers about in 40 years. The perfect player to bring out the best in Rio, if he'd had better luck with injuries we could've won even more.

Legend and superb CB defensively but his distribution was shocking.

Ridiculous. His distribution was absolutely fine. Nothing extravagant, but he found his man without panic and the passes were crisp as well. Like John Terry, only slightly less two footed.

Wasn't sure about him when he first came. Couldn't have been more wrong. One of the best defenders we ever had.

What a player he was. One of my favourites from my most fond period of watching United.

Enjoy your retirement Nemanja. Few footballers deserve it as much as you.

One of my favourite ever United players. It is quite rare for a defender to make fans feel inferior (I could never do that! type of feeling) but he was the type of player who was so damn courageous and gifted in the air... you couldn't help but feel like a mere mortal when watching him play. He had no right to win 70% of the balls he went up for, yet you just knew he would win it every single time... He absolutely shits on someone like Fellaini who is claimed to be exceptional in the air.

The word BEAST is over used to describe footballers, but he was a Titan. An absolute monster who we were so blessed to have in our shirt. Vidic was the man who really gave that CL winning side a proper backbone.. all through the side, as great as it was.. we had fancy players throughout the side i.e. Rio and Carrick were great readers of the game but not battlers. He was the guy who gave our side the Keanoesque edge.. gave us a spine which could compete against any type of team, any type of situation. I am sure Rio thanks his lucky stars, that this guy was signed and allowed him to reach his potential.

His ability on the ball was underrated too, so comfortable and kept it simple off either foot. Rarely saw him flap it on the ball under pressure against all manner of sides and always looked to play forward.

All the best in your future career Nemanja!

Did he and Moyes not get on? I vaguely remember him leaving in odd circumstances.
None of the old guard got on with Moyes, it seemed. Evra's situation seemed a little hazy as well.

Did he and Moyes not get on? I vaguely remember him leaving in odd circumstances.

He said he probably would have stayed if he had known Moyes was getting the chop... sad times

Thoroughly enjoyed that time he slowed down a touch just so he could smash Kyle Walker

Who would have though Vidic wouldn't like Moyes making him and the other defenders watch clips of Jagielka's defending.

This part from the Sir Alex book summed him up quite nicely for me:

“Vidic was a dour, uncompromising sod. He was a proud Serb. In 2009, he came to see me to say he might be getting called up."

“What do you mean, called up?’ I said, alarmed. ‘Kosovo. I am going,’ he said. ‘It’s my duty.'”

What an awesome player, a complete soldier on the pitch

Can he come back as part of the coaching team? That would be awesome if him and Rio imparted their wisdom.

Best defender we had in the PL era and probably the best in the world between 2008 and 2011. Absolute beast.

A shame he has to retire, a proper defender - did what he did without fuss, one of the best in the world and his partnership with Rio was perfect.

What a player he was. God looking at the photos of that team is depressing. That was a United team. A world away from whoever the feck this current lot are.

Our best ever defender. Watching his movement and leaps was even more jawdropping live than on the TV. A lot defenders like Nesta and Rio gets extra praise due to their style of defending, but I don't think I've ever seen a better defender than Nemanja.
