There are defensive mids like Fabinho and Matuidi who contribute quite a bit in attack and there's the other type like Matic who only have defensive responsibilities providing cover for other midfielders. To me it's blatantly obvious why we're in for Matic instead of Fabinho for instance. We need a defensive midfielder who does the dirty work for Pogba so he can focus on attacking. Matic is perfect for that

For me, an ideal midfield three will be one DM, one pass master who dictates play and one creative player who can dribble and link up with the attackers.

We have one DM and one creative player in Matic and Pogba. But we lack someone who can dictate play but Herrera is defensively better and can get in a few brilliant assists. So our midfield three isn't perfect but it's pretty strong. If we get Veratti, I'd call it perfect.
Many teams which don't have this perfect fix use other formations like 343. But for such a midfield three to work, you need three attackers who have are more goal scorers than creative players. Players who mainly come alive in the final third providing the goal or assists and have excellent movement.

The perfect midfield for me is one pure defensive midfielder, one box-to-box all rounder and one playmaker. Pogba, Herrera and Matic is quite close to perfection in my eyes, it's a brilliant midfield

Fabinho has horrific positional sense as a DM. He was skinned so badly by Juve in the first leg that he didn't even touch the field on the return leg.
Matic is Prem proven and has great awareness as a DM. It's a great, no-brainer signing.
