It's funny though that we were the only club linked to Fabinho and for whatever reason we didn't push harder like you said and maybe there is something in that. It may also mean that Monaco rate him more than they do the others and selling Mendy for £50m + was just good business. I didn't rate bakayoko much.
Mourinho needs a few players he can trust and he is hoping that Matic will recapture the firm he showed when he first arrived.

Fair points. At the end of it all, Matic is an improvement to our team and a player that offers abilities that no other player does. I do like the idea of TFM or Dendoncker later down the line so hopefully that materialises instead. I have been championing the notion that if a player doesn't improve our team we shouldn't buy him, IE no point buying a DM just for the sake of filling a position. Luckily Matic is very capable, and tbf he has absolute rocket of a shot on him.

So much concentration on the individual in here. It's often a low-key signing or a simple tactical adjustment that makes a team start to tick. You would have been laughed out of here this time last year for suggesting that Victor Moses and Marcus Alonso would be the keys to Chelsea's season.

How many years have we been lamenting the state of our midfield? Matic, Pogba, Herrera sounds like a pretty good blend to me.

I just find it disappointing that we are signing from our rivals, a player that isn't one of their best.
He played 35 out of there 38 league games last season when they won the league.... can't be that bad.

That ironic, considering we are signing a player who just won the league and 2 of the last 3 titles available?

What available DM would you guys want instead?

They'll all say Fabinho who is no where near as good defensively and is more a box to box player in any case. Good defensive midfielders who are very good on the ball as well are are hard to find. 40m for Matic is cracking business from the club.

Another great signing for us if this comes off. Like Lukaku, we know exactly what we're getting with Matic. Forget about his age, he's won two Premier League trophies in three years.

Compare that to taking a punt on a younger player, from a far weaker league. Not forgetting a couple of months to settle in and adjust to the prem. Its a no brainier for me.

This. People love a box to box midfielder but we need one who can sit and do the hard graft and let Pogba play.

I wouldn't mind us signing Dendoncker as well.

If you throw enough money at the player they become available and we have the cash to do so. Every player has its price. Kross, Fabinho, veratti etc

Matic would be an addition who has the mentality of winning game after game. He will bring a lot on the pitch but it's not just about that.

same with Carrick when he was signed.

Many mocked and were underwhelmed and yet he was without doubt, the 'final cog' for the great 2008 team and has had a prestigious career with us.

Not sure why so many are less thrilled with Matic (aside from price).

When Mourinho signed him at Chelsea, it was agreed to be an astute signing, and along with Costa, he was a pivotal reason for their league win.

What that tells me is that he has genuine quality and Mourinho knows exactly how to activate it. And so after his own due diligence, it should be reassuring that Mourinho is going back to an ex-player to fix one of his problems - it offers that much more certainty of working out.

Happy with Matic. Think he would do a solid job for us. He's not glamorous but he's experienced, a winner and Jose knows him inside out.

Yeah, he's not bad but not really an exciting signing.
Doesn't mean anything though. If he gets back in form, he'll be a great addition.

Amazing to me that some posters are "meh" about this signing. Matic is a quality player, played a pivotal role in two title wins, and has experience playing with Mourinho. The best part of this signing is that Pogba will get much needed defensive cover, which Fellaini could never properly offer.

Matic walks into the team and automatically makes our midfield much better and more balanced. Great signing.

Nail on head.

Nail on the head there.

A experienced head that has won the league, is a natural replacement for Carrick and will help get the best out of Pogba. No complaints from me and hopefully we can get Perisic now too.

He's an upgrade on Fellaini though and Matic/Pogba/Herrera/Perriera/Carrick isn't bad for midfield places hope we bring in another though, maybe Dendoncker?

I want to see us scoring more from corners next season. There are no excuses now. We have Pogba, Smalling, Fellaini, Lindelof, Lukaku, and soon Matic as well. Even Zlatan when he returns as well. Last season they were awful.
Agreed. For a team which is full of giants, we are poor in set pieces. Only Smalling seems to find the ball more often than not, but ends up missing most of the time.

"Allegedely Real"

Dont believe it but did anyone wear 31 as Bastian has left?

I'll admit it's not filling me with excitement but he's an experienced player that is in a position we need filling badly.

Nicely done. I think he would create more balance in the midfield. For years, United has been playing with imbalance midfield and hopefully the trio of Pogba, Matic and Herrera will be the mainstay for most of next season. Pereira being the more than decent backup to either Pogba and Herrera, although I would think another experienced addition to the midfield wouldn't be bad especially when Fellaini is supposedly going to Turkey.

Pogba, Herrera, Matic, Pereira, Carrick.

His head looks tiny af in that. Clearly no football brain in there.
