I honestly can't understand how anyone can seriously believe Matic will be a poor signing. An experienced EPL player, who just contributed to an unlikely league win, in a position we badly need a proven item in, to play for a manager who knows how to get the best out him.

Its easy really. Jose gave Ed his list and said get me said player. If Ed fails to get his targets, then its on him. Ed is a man under pressure.
Hope for his sake he hits the ground running, people so opposed to this that he's major danger of being the default scapegoat/spacegoat for being Jose's man a la Fellaini with Moyes.
I agree that he has not been that amazing for Chelsea last season but still he had a lot of playing time which shows that he was important for the balance.
I am wondering that Chelsea are looking to get Bakayoko who to me looks like a very similar player to Kante.
For us I think Matic could be the missing link for our midfield. Herrera is our Kante running up and down the pitch.
And everybody claims Pogba does need 2 midfielders to play behind him so a 4-3-3 seems to be a must.

The entire Chelsea squad (bar Willian) were atrocious in Jose's last season so Matic can get a pass for that. Last season, Conte played a different system that didn't play to Matic's strengths.
If Matic gets close to his 14/15 level of performance this transfer will be hailed as a masterstroke.

Perhaps Woodward and other United officials have gone to support Jose, not completely out the question that the football side of things would wait for a day or 2.

i understand the support angle, but we announced lindelof with numerous details still outstanding. If it's 100% done as jackson is claiming, where is the BBC confirmation? Where is the "we are signing matic subject to XYZ"?

I'm just guessing from what's been said, but until Bakayoko is a Chelsea player then nothing will be announced. If we said we are signing Matic subject to XYZ and then Bakayoko pulls out of a deal for whatever reason, then we will look very foolish.
I am still against this signing but I guess a case can be made for it. We have a relatively young backline with Valencia being the most senior in terms of age but he is a converted winger so in defensive experience he is not the most experienced. Matic brings that experience and organisation in the defensive phase and we do have two of the best CMs in Europe who should be able to cover whatever shortcoming he might have as a result of decline. His age allows us to blood in kids like TFM or Axel because he has around three years at the top.

The main problem with that comparison is that the three teams have completely different organizations, none of these players play the same role.

I'm no Matic fan, but you could probably compare the stats of strikers from the Scottish / Dutch leagues with players from the Prem and they will probably stack up.

Mourinho has worked with him and seen him close up in training, so he will be the best judge of him as a player and how he will fit into our side.
