As said before, I normally trust what Jose wants to do, but this signing doesn't fill me with confidence at all. Matic was good when he won the league with Jose, but he's been going downhill ever since.

Even if Fabinho is off, I would rather Dier than Matic. I would rate them at about the same level currently but Dier has room to improve at least, Matic is at what should be his peak right now.

They didn't do it very well last season. I like Herrara but lets not pretend he is something he isn't. He can be a very good player for us playing Similar to Darren Fletcher, anything more his quality will get exposed.
Well Herrera was deployed as a CDM for most of last year. Thats why he couldnt do it. He didnt have the freedom to move further up the pitch and affect the play since he had to stay back and worry about defensive duties. And when he was deployed next to Pogba as a CM, it was a even more defensive liability situation where you just cannot afford to venture forward.

I've just read he is 29 in a few weeks and the fee is £40m. This gets worse and worse the more I read. No Jose, Please.
29 is just fine for his position. Some of you behave as if he's 39! We will get 3 seasons at least out of him.

Great deal for us. Barring his first 6 months or so, he hasn't actually been that good for us in my opinion. A lot of the time you just notice him turning very slowly, surprised that people are actually playing football around him, as he desperately tries to get within 10 yards of the ball. Hell of a fee for us too.

Hope you have a lot of patience with Bakayoko because he is even worse then Matic in the ways you described.

shit, I had it in my head he was only 25/26

fecking bizarre transfer,

But if he fits into what JM wants to do, thats all that matters I guess.

I added carrick in, he is no improvement over carrick

Based on that and that only, I conclude that Matic is the same player type as Carrick and about as good, but younger, and that Fellaini and Fabinho is the same type as Fellaini, only Fellaini is a bit better. Oh, and we should buy Ander Herrera for £100m if he's not already ours.

Yep. Great deal for Chelsea, looks like you'll get enough to fund the Bakayoko purchase (and change).

So with Matic there who sits the majority of the time, what would your problem with Herrera being allowed more freedom?

Herrara - Matic - Pogba. It would never be... Pogba - Herrara - Matic would it.

I find it really hard to believe that with our scouting resources, pull and huge finances that Matic is the best we can do. He could 'do a job' but that describes most of our squad - we don't them, we need players to walk into the first team and lift us.

And for £40m?!?

I have a feeling we will buy both Matic and Fabinho which will pave the way for Fellaini to feck off to China/Belgium/US/Championship

DM: Matic, Fabinho
MC: Pogba, Herrera
AMC: James, Periera

It's a fecking great deal for you's. Even at his 'peak' he was massively overrated. Now though, he's pretty poor, in all honesty.

As others have pointed out, Matic has suffered a precipitous physical decline in recent seasons. Tackles, interceptions, clearances out of defence, aerial duels, dribbles - they are all down:

Kante cannibalises most of these stats. The same way Smalling would have higher physical stats when paired with Bllind than he would have playing with Jones or Bailly.

The mass meltdown is still going on so is there anything new ? Too lazy to search the previous pages.

Matic? We have had this whole argument in response to you saying how a player like Fabinho would improve our team.

Dominated entire epl midfeild this season Except at oldtrafford.
He didn't. He in particular was very poor against midfields like Spurs who have two super athletes in Dembele and Wanyama. Also really struggles against pace.

Basically, when we can be the dominant side in a match against lesser opponents (which tbf is most of the league) Matic looks very solid. When we played against teams with great pace and/or mobility (most of the top 6 sides) he struggles.

It looks like Chelsea are wrapping up the Bakayoko deal from Monaco for about £35m. So they've flogged Matic to us for £40m, bought a 22 year old from Monaco with bags of potential AND made a £5m profit. I cant get my head around this.

This place never ceases to amaze me, I'd trust the judgement of one of the greatest managers of all time on a player he's already worked with and bought previously.

You know that wont happen, Jose will have a permaboner over the thought of all that height in the team, we can field an entire team of WWF size guys.

That's what herrera is here for, When he sits deep he rarely struggles, in a 343 he had to create too in the midfeild so push forward against big teams. By the way i Have seen him score a glorious goal vs spurs in fa cup semi.

No surprise those stats went down after Kante arrived.

There will be some truth in that. However, interceptions aside, all those stats began declining in the season prior to Kante's arrival.

Fellaini all over again.

If true, its more ammo against Ed Woodward the supposed transfer guru

How about keep him, seeing as they just won the league with him in it. They are not compelled to sell. Costa has been a handful since Conte arrived and is always pining over Atletico. Matic just does his job yet they still want to offload him to United. Its weird
Looking back, the rumours of Matic wanting to join us last year must have been true. Maybe Conte bringing in another midfielder is because he has to replace Matic rather than buying a better player and sqeezing him out?
40m is too much h to turn down and they simply have to sell? By all accounts they're spending a fortune this summer so they might need to fund it

Most of the important stats there are pretty constant throughout; can't really read much into The two most important stats (tackles and interceptions) don't even show a pattern of decline. The only thing that stands out from those stats is the big change in 2016/17, which is down to him playing with a very different midfield partner and system. Really think we read too much into stats sometimes.

I think @WPMUFC should forward Jose Matic's statistics, because obviously he hasn't had a look at them and doesn't know what he is doing. Because numbers are everything, would someone please LOOK AT THE NUMBERS!

I wouldn't have been against signing Fabinho, he looked good on the ball for a CM. But, I'd only seen him play in the CL (like many others I'd guess) and Monaco looked far from a defensively solid team with him there.

Well we do have a better defensive system than Monaco do.

There's no beating around the bush here. Carrick is a former player in all but name and Fellaini is a no 10 whose being played as DM as he's too shit to play upfront. We therefore need 2 DMs. Also in Italy, there's plenty of rumours of Darmian being Juventus target. I don't think Mou wants Darmian to leave. However we're talking of Juventus here (for an Italian player its the equivalent of having a threesome with Jessica Alba and Belen Rodriguez) so he will find it pretty hard convincing Darmian to stay especially since he's a reserve at United.

Now, what I do think is going to happen is that we will buy Matic as DM and Fabinho as cover for him and Valencia. That will allow Carrick to retire with some dignity (ie we kept him as 'cover' for Matic. Not solely to earn an extra 12 months of salary) + it will let us release Darmian + it will give us time for Fabinho to settle down (some say he's still quite rash). Once Carrick kicks the bucket on his football career, Fabinho will move in CM and we will start to work on Valencia's replacement.

Not particularly. Apparently we're the only ones seriously interested in him, so it's either don't sell or send him to OT for Chelsea.

The squawka stats comparison matrix site will no doubt be on the verge of crashing soon judging by the screenshots.

Many people unhappy, throwing toys out of pram, tantrums everywhere as if it's their money being spent on Matic. You know, the usual Caf response. That's pretty much it so far. I'm enjoying the thread and just stoking the fire now and then.

Not sure how Squawka does it, but according to WhoScored he went from attempting 5.7 tackles with 3.6 successful in 14/15 to 3.6(2.5) in 15/16 to 2.3(1.5) this past year. That's much more concerning to me overall-he's noticeably less mobile and much less willing to play aggressively since his first year and a half.

First Perisic.....Then Morata.....Now Matic

When we qualified for the Champions League a few weeks ago, I genuinely thought there would be a queue of world stars wanting to join. How wrong was I. These signings sadden me
We were probably better off losing the Europa final

On a positive note, the signing of Matic will mean less of Fellaini. That can only be a good thing.

Would it though? Matic will play only one position and that is defensive mid. Fellaini was employed sometimes as a #10 and in CM.

Just that ? I though from this meltdown that the signing is announced by BBC or something.
