40m for a player trying to be offloaded by chelsea - nearly 29. I seriously think we need a DOF and plan long term recruiting.

Moyes fellaini, LVG Bastian, Jose Matic

I have no issues with this signing as such but think its a short term move and we will need a rebuild in 2 years.
I think the club allows the coach to overspend on one player with no resale value.
He'll be 29 on the 1st of August.
Really good deal for Chelsea.
Maybe the fee is wrong.

Players don't vanish when they are 31, he is 29, not 39.

You can't just sign young players all the time, sometimes you need that experience and short term thinking for long term planning.

I hope for a Mourinho's sake this works out. £40m isn't a trivial amount if money that we can sweep under the carpet, we need Matic to significantly improve our midfield for that price.
When Liverpool and Arsenal are competing to sign Mbappe with bids exceeding 80 mil then getting a proven PL player for £40 mil as he hits his peak years isn't that bad of a deal. Its probably the equivalent of a £20 million signing from 2-3 years ago

This would be very underwhelming. Especially when Chelsea will most likely replace him with two better options. Matic was fantastic in his first season at Chelsea, his decline has been sharp however.

Aye, I mean he's only managed both players. Think he knows better than the Caf, who have just seen their recent endorsements like Schweinsteiger & Scheniderlin leave after failing.

Mourinho publicly said he handled Schweinstiger wrongly, funnily enough.

Hopefully you are correct but adding something wrong in article doesn't mean the main article is incorrect.

If Jackson is getting briefed and the same source is saying Madrid want De Gea, then it does call into question his other statements in the article. JAckson isn't a spanish transfer guy, he'd have to have a united source.

Seeing this same thought all over the internet. Lukaku scored more goals than Diego in a much worse side with much worse service. He's much better in the air and he won't get wound up and lose his head like Diego. Bakayoko has the same physical tools as Matic but is much younger, better with the ball at his feet, and a better passer.

How are these downgrades? Especially if they're Conte's first choice targets.

Not to mention, Diego hasn't played one full season for Chelsea without something being wrong. First season he missed 12PL games bc of hamstring and suspension issues. Then he downed tools for Mou for half the season and did the same thing after China came calling. I'd rather a striker blow hot and cold from game to game, not for 6 month periods.

You guys should really have more faith in Jose, who has a far better understanding of what Matic will bring to the team than all posters on here.

If Jose thinks that Matic will compliment / improve our midfield, I'm more than happy to welcome him to the club.

As for people moaning about £40m - its simply a sign of the times, we can't go comparing transfer values to those of yester-year - there's too much money around now to compare like for like.

Still would have been the same outcome.

And how might you know that?

Also the reply that mourinho knows better is getting tiresome now. If a player is widely thought of to be a better acquisition than Matic, we should be able to voice our opinions or concerns about it. It's a debate forum and we are guessing just like everyone else. Managers make mistakes and Mourinho has misjudged talent before.

What I don't get is how the feck we're paying 40m.
Considering we're signing a regular starter from a direct rival, it's actually surprisingly cheap. Especially in this market where a relegated GK is worth £30m

Why are people here treating it as if Matic deal has been announced on manutd.com? English media has been really clueless about our transfers recently, and it may be true this time as well. That said, 40m pounds is too much for a player who might not be wanted at Chelsea after Bakayoko's arrival.

That's the consequence when you hired Mourinho. He will bring you immediate success but he won't think twice about your club's future.

Everyone knows Fabinho should be the one ahead of Matic. Younger, talented, and more hungry to success.

The goalkeeper is a fantastic talent and 19 years old. Matic is 29 and would depreciate as fast as a new car would when you drive it out a showroom.

These are the same posters who were ordering their Ronaldo shirts last week. Gullible feckers.

Gutted to be honest, but was expecting Dier or Matic for a big fee. Still massively disappointed

Yeah I don't get the hate for this one

Positives
Seems we're setting up to play 4-3-3 next season which will get the best out of Herrera and more importantly Pogba
He's a good DM who should be physically in better shape than Carrick to play the holding role (albeit in a different way)
He knows what it takes to win league titles and played a big role in both of Chelsea's recent ones (albeit arguably less so in the second)

Negatives
Price? Although the days of 30m players for us in midfield and attack are over
Age? Though 29 for a DM is hardly retirement age when you see how long the likes of Pirlo, Alonso and Carrick have played at a good level till
Attitude? As he's one of those blamed for Jose's last season at Chelsea, bet that wouldn't stop anyone wanting Hazard though would it?

I'd of preferred Fabinho but we're not wanting this guy to pull up any trees for us, just to let the likes of Herrera and Pogba play their natural game and that's where Matic's real impact will be I suspect

I'm all for this signing

If we were signing someone from a foreign club I'd agree. But when the British press break news relating to us buying a player from another English club, they're usually correct.

Posters who don't believe this are in denial.

This is happening.

They won't write the full article based on what they get, they will add something always.

Like I said, I have a gut feeling this will go. Too much smoke and all that.

Let's get him in. Starting DM for a side that has won the title 2 out of the last 3 seasons? feck yes.

He's also a better passes than he's given credit for - he started out as a #10 after all. We need a winning mentality in the squad and Matic is the right guy for that. You can't all be a squad of up and coming 22-24 year olds. You need some players that have "been there and done that."
