State of this thread. Utterly convinced hardly anyone here has watched Nemanja Matic.

Jose like to reunite with his former players. Zlatan, Eto and now Matic. He believes in this kinda stuff

It's not all doom and gloom. Your assessment is correct, and that's why we're not sad to see him go. It looks like he can't perform for any Chelsea anymore. However, if anyone is going to revitalize him, it'd be Jose. A top Matic helped us stay in the title race longer than we should have been there in 13-14 and one of the big reasons we won it the following year. If he gets back to anything like that, I'd say that's worth at least 12 points on the table.

If he was in his mid twenties or younger I'd probably agree. He'll be 29 by the start of next season though, so should be at his peak. It is too late in a career to sign a player expecting them to push on a level or get back to some previous height. You sign a player that age based on them already performing well enough and on the presumption they can maintain that level for a few years.

He might be more comfortable in a Jose side, but I can't see him suddenly, after gradually getting worse for two years, immediately picking up again.

I watched a lot of your games last year and the main issue was just how painfully long it took him to do anything. It shouldn't take a player 5+ seconds to play a pass to the person stood next to him, regardless of who the manager is. You'd have thought he was in his late 30s watching him.

This is happening. I've come to terms with it.
Hope he plays his socks off. Been average for two seasons.

José Mourinho is intent on signing Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic for around £40m, with Manchester United hopeful of completing the transfer this week.

The 28-year-old is understood to have agreed personal terms with United and the two clubs have agreed his price.

Matic, who will earn around £155,000 a week, is expected to take a medical in the coming days, though the death of Mourinho’s father, Félix, on Sunday may slow the deal. The manager is in Portugal for the funeral but the midfielder is expected to become a United player before the club travel to the United States for a pre-season tour on 9 July, at the very latest

Looks like this one is happening.

Signing a nearly 29 year old while we'll probably let Fabinho slip away to a rival & be a star, then like usual we'll all go into meltdown as everyone elses signings are great & wondering why we weren't in for any seemingly perfect fit players... great summer ahead!

I hope for a Mourinho's sake this works out. £40m isn't a trivial amount if money that we can sweep under the carpet, we need Matic to significantly improve our midfield for that price.

Moyes brought Fellaini, LVG brought Bastian, Mou will bring Matic. Lets hope our next manager will not be Trapattoni else we risk signing Basler

I think there is still room for Fabinho even if Matic arrives.

Matic, Herrera, Fabinho, Pogba, Fellaini, Carrick. Good options.

The problem for the Caf is that he's apparently a grandad because he's 28. Sign the exact same player at the age of 24 and the Caf would be frothing.

When I hear Matic, first thing that comes to my mind.

I would rather have Matic than Bakayoko personally. Like Lukaku in for Costa I think Chelsea are downgrading again.
Seeing this same thought all over the internet. Lukaku scored more goals than Diego in a much worse side with much worse service. He's much better in the air and he won't get wound up and lose his head like Diego. Bakayoko has the same physical tools as Matic but is much younger, better with the ball at his feet, and a better passer.

How are these downgrades? Especially if they're Conte's first choice targets.

Says the clubs have agreed a fee and a medical booked.
This will be announced as soon as Cheslsea sign Bakayoko.

Matic or Fabinho would spend half their time on the bench. I don't see it.

What rival? I keep reading how Conte wanting to sell Matic is this major warning light but what about the fact that nobody seems to want to sign Fabinho? Even Juve wanted him for right back.
Something just isn't right about him

Seems an odd signing, as he's a bit of a cart horse in the middle of the park. I think he's decent on the ball, but are we really saying he's the best option out there for the money?

40m for a player trying to be offloaded by chelsea - nearly 29. I seriously think we need a DOF and plan long term recruiting.

Moyes fellaini, LVG Bastian, Jose Matic

I have no issues with this signing as such but think its a short term move and we will need a rebuild in 2 years.

Something just isn't right above him

Someone will come in for him even if it's out of no where, see how fast City signed Bernardo Silva, or Thiago fiasco all over again

I can't pretend I watch Chelsea, I'm not boring and lonely.

But how can a player who's been a regular in teams that have won the title in 2 of the last 3 seasons be that bad?

Anyway, with Chelsea about to sign the poundland Pogba, I can see this escalating if it's true

Sometimes you need those short term signings. We have to get back to winning league titles yesterday.

in the same article

Perez has already come out and talked about how well he gets on with navas now and also that he hasn't spoken to De Gea since 2015.

Hopefully you are correct but adding something wrong in article doesn't mean the main article is incorrect.

Matic will do ok for you - personally glad this finally puts an end to the Dier talk.

Somebody might so sign him but there are 3/4 top sides looking for a holding midfielder and the only side linked to him is us, even that is dubious at best.
I'll call it now, Fabinho is going nowhere because nobody wants him

It might be time for some users to just accept that they aren't as good managers as Jose Mourinho. I know it's a bitter pill to swallow.
