Nemanja Matic| BBC says deal agreed

Warming up to signing him now, i think he is very underrated here, he has been in two title winning teams in last three years, he was great at benfica too. Sir alex wanted him, I think if we sign him, it will be on good merit and he will be a very important player for us. I think many here want Fabinho and me too but i think Matic right now is ready while fabinho will need atleast half a season to adjust and if we want to win a title we need ready made players.

I also have a feeling Monaco wont let both bakayoko and Fabinho go, so since bakayoko is more intent on leaving i think Fabinho might stay another season.
In an ideal world getting both would be great and selling fellaini would be the ultimate transfer merry go round, but it wont happen.

If Jose wants him, I won't complain until he's had time in our jersey. But he was the one of the three, Dier and Fabinho included, that I wanted least.

I think at worst he'll improve us, which isn't the worst result in the world.

Please someone tell me Ogden knows nothing ?:nervous:

He's a decent journo, but I don't think he knows anything about our transfer dealings. Moyes isn't manager anymore.

Ogden or not, I don't pay much attention to what ESPN report anyway.

It's like buying a broken down pick-up when a brand new jeep is there for the taking at no extra cost.

Matic makes perfect sense in a lot of ways. He's good defensively, he passes the ball pretty well, he's a big strong lad, which is important under this manager and he's willing to follow Mourinho's tactical plan, which he probably knows inside and out. In theory, he'll give us a few years breathing room in that position. It's one less unknown for Mourinho to deal with.

Personally I think there are better players out there, but they may not even want to join us. He's certainly more than good enough to improve what we have at the moment.

Agree.

Jose builds a specific team and lineup. Matic and Perisic may not be sexy but they make a lot of sense.

As for Fabinho - for all the talk of "Viera on steroids" around here.... the top clubs seem less obsessed with him

I think a Matic-Herrera-Pogba midfield would suit him more than Chelsea's current setup.

Matic struggled most for us when we were playing a midfield 2 against pace and athleticism. When teams can transition quickly and counter attack he's slow as hell and turns like a tanker.

For this reason, I can't imagine Mou would play him in a '2' with Pogba, but rather a '3' with Pogba and Herrera.

Am put off by his age, up and down form, the feeling we could get better elsewhere (Fabinho) and that he is all left foot whereas Pogba prefers to play on the left side so I don't really get it. But there is no doubt that he was excellent under Mourinho in 2014/15.

£40M for a guy with no resale value? Are we fecking mad? If Mourinho can't be flexible and needs to surround himself with former 'yes men' then can we ask him to pay towards this supposed transfer? It's a crazy amount of money for someone who's surplus to Chelsea's requirements.

Youd think they asked you to pay the fee.

Jose is trying to build a team that will win a title in the next 2 years, he isnt thinking of what they can be sold for in 4 years, he isnt managing Aston Villa

Fabinho is comfortably better than Matic

This isnt certainly the redcafe view. Tho curiously I have yet to see a top club seriously linked to him beyond a few scatteted reports and a pile of ITK garbage.

You're acting as if Mourinho has never made a mistake. A stop gap is all right but not for £40M. You're acting like the club doesn't have huge overheads and can just spend to indulge the present manager. He has to buy smart. United isn't the bank of bloody England.

What I find concerning about this potential transfer is all the stick Matic was given last season by Chelsea fans, on their forums. Especially during the second part of the season. Really suggests the image of a player that has just begun his decline, and I have a bad feeling that image carries some merit. He'll definitely strengthen us for a while, but maybe not long enough to be worth it with what he'll cost, especially ahead of other options

Everyone acting as if we are signing a right shit player. We all know Matic fits the Mourinho system perfectly as proven.

If we sign him ile be happy with it.

and when he gets sacked a season or so after winning that title we are left with his old crap to clear out. I want more forward thinking.

Cracking player. And in a middle with Pogba, Herrera he will thrive.

His age would like leave us looking for a replacement within 2yrs.

Would expect us to be getting someone younger

Agreed, I'd be more than happy. Exactly the sort of player we need and premier league proven (also execeptional under our own manager no less).
He'd be a great signing.

I would obviously prefer Fabinho but we need to trust Mourinho knows what he's doing. He's 28, almost 29, so he's in his prime at the moment. As a replacement for Carrick i think this signing makes sense, mind you i'd still go for fabinho this summer as well though.

Agreed, once Jose shits the bed and leaves we'll have two 30 year old mediocre clunkers with no resale value clogging up the squad.

Our squad has a very healthy average age.. Our oldest starter is Valencia, hardly leaving us with old crap to clear out o.O

Funny how no one mentioned how great Matic was until we were linked with him!! Can we please stop entertaining the thought of signing him now please?

So we win a title but get stuck with Matic? Sounds a lot better than finishing 5th, sign me up

We were close to Micheal keane and we signed Lindelof. Its either a tactic to get Monaco to lower price or distract other competition or Fabinho is doing the same for Matic. Dont think we sign both although i would love us to sign both.

That is what I am hoping.

Or we could sign other, better players with a beter age and still win a title and end up with players that are still useful two years on?

Astonishing idea I know, needs some imagination (maybe more than our current manager possesses), live a little.

The last quoted price for Fabinho was 35m + 5m in bonuses. I dont think they will go cheaper than that. And even at that price he is cheaper than Matic. As far as competition for Fabinho I dont think there is any.
