Nelson Semedo

Barca are meant to have a deal in place to sign Cancelo from I think Valencia, Bayern have Kimmich and Chelsea have Azpillicueta so don't think we have much competition in signing him if he is a genuine target.

City will be in the market for a new RB surely.

Azpilicueta has been played almost exclusively as a CB this season hasn't he? I think there were rumours that they were in for Antonio for the right wing back position and if so there's a good chance they'd be looking at Semedo as well.
Bayern have actually been linked with him and Kimmich is more of an all rounder as I understand it. You might have a better grasp of Bayern than I have but he has played mostly in midfield aswell, so hardly strange if they were looking for a specialist.
And then there's City ofc.

I didn't watch the game however every goal in the highlight, this guy defensive positioning & awareness is questionable (directly involved or not). Anyone watched the game, can give an insight how he play (especially defensively) beside the goals?

He was poor yesterday. Had some fault on at least two goals. Not Semedo´s biggest fan but i think he's entitled to a bad game sometimes. He's young and he will grow with the experience in these games. Having said that i thought Lindelof was worse.

Yeah, I'm probably his biggest fan on here but last night was not one of his best, especially for the first goal although the near-post header probably put him off.

No-one's going to have a perfect game every game.

I don't believe half the crap in the papers to be fair. I wouldn't mind this transfer at all.

I can't see us spending huge on a right back. Jose is happy with Valencia and has far bigger concerns right now. He sure looks exciting though.

Yeah, although RB was on my list of priorities a few months ago, I can't see us going for one this summer. We have bigger holes to fill and we won't want a huge player turnover yet again. Agree that he looks exciting though, the first Benfica player linked with us I've ever been excited about signing I think.

Whilst I wouldn't call RB a massive priority at this point, Valencia is 32 now and, whilst he dies have a great engine, we all know how quickly fullbacks in particular can drop. Would much rather get his replacement in early.

In my opinion he's overrated, like many other players from Portugal. I've watched him a few times and I didn't see anything special, or at least nothing that would justify €35M. However, there are not many good RB out there at the moment.

If there was truth in the Lindelof reports may be there was with Semedo too? Starting to be linked again with him. Also Dunc says we are after two defensive targets. One to watch.

Personally,I want two new fullbacks.
Although I like Valencia, I think he's very poor in the final third. If this guy has more variation in his attacking talent, it would be a plus. Also hope we get Mendy.

The problem with that is that this will mean we are going to change 2 FBs and 1 new CB in Lindelof - too many changes in a starting back 4 from last season. Can't see it happening especially with Valencia tied down to a new contract. May happen next season I feel.

Surprised anyone wants Valencia changed in our stating 11. Especially with left back being so poor this season and Valencia being one of our star players. Also we have a very young squad and we need a bit experience on the pitch with the younger guys and new players coming in also.

Exactly, I think Jose kind of likes Darmian as LB due to his defensive diligence. When we have the ball, the back 4 becomes like a back 3, with Valencia pushing upfront and Darmian tucking in. This allows the front 6 to push up nearer to the opponents penalty area.

I would like to get Semedo on, but not to immdiately replace Valencia. Valencia is 32 now iirc and despite his natural fitness fullbacks tend to get found out pretty quickly with age, look at Ivanovic and how quickly he dropped. I would look to sign Semedo and bring him in to phase Valencia out to a squad role for the 18/19 season.

I think it will be more for cover and competition for Valencia. Whenever Valencia needs a break or is injured, we do not have a proper attacking option from right full back. Yes we need a left back because Shaw is always injured, but it seems Jose prefers playing with a more defensive left back for balance (like what @gr3yham3 above has explained), so Blind or Darmian can slot in there.

I'd rather replace Blind and Shaw to be honest we have just as much cover at right back as left back nowadays with Young TFM Tunzabe Bailly or Darmian. Getting someone like Sandro or Mendy would instantly improve our starting 11. Surely that's what should be our aim here than targeting a position that is already strong. A bit like replacing Herrera for me. Yes Verrati would be better but there are other positions that requires attention before we get to these guys.

It is rather him or an LB, i dont see us going for two fullbacks. Think this one could really be on

There could be something in this one? He was also linked throughout the season in the same way Lindelof was but we constantly dismissed both as mere unreliable Portuguese rumours.

City wouldn't surprise me. Alves and Semedo is probably more sensible than say Alves and Walker. They'll definitely be trying to hoover up a lot of fullbacks.

I would have thought we'd have started preparing our offer while speaking to them about Lindelöf...

This rumour never made sense to me given how much Mourinho likes Valencia.

However iirc it was Mourinho that switched Azpilicueta to left back and he did end the season with Darmian in that position so he's not averse to inverted full backs. Maybe he sees him as the solution to our left back problems.

There's no way he'd do that. Azpilicueta was moved to the left because of his defensive abilities in one-on-one duels, Semedo is a fantastic attacking prospect on his preferred side. You're allowed to have 2 good rightbacks. Valencia is going to be 32 in two months, and whilst he is a physical monster, he will need more rotation. He was one of the few Mourinho rested on a few occasions toward the end of last season.
