Nelson Semedo

This rumour never made sense to me given how much Mourinho likes Valencia.

However iirc it was Mourinho that switched Azpilicueta to left back and he did end the season with Darmian in that position so he's not averse to inverted full backs. Maybe he sees him as the solution to our left back problems.

That RWB role is absolutely crucial to Mourinhos set up last season. Whenever Valencia wasn't playing we missed him a lot, and the problem is that Valencia can't play every game anymore. We need another option there that is able to offer the same threat going forward.

LB is actually less of an issue imo if we are going to continue the way we did last season. We have Blind, Rojo, Darmian, Shaw & Mitchell there. Our LB has far less onus on them to attack, so the first three can perform the job that Mourinho wants. Shaw & Mitchell being the more attacking opitons.

Unless Semedo can play left back I don't see the point when Valencia was one of our best players last season.

Valencia can't play two games in one week. Mourinho said the same this season. Semedo would be a brilliant rotation option and would claim the role over the next season or two.

Lindelöf will play there if Valencia needs rotating.

I highly doubt and hope that isn't the case. I'd much rather have an actual right back there. It's not a crime to have two very good players who can play in one spot. Competition is great, and healthy.

In any case, people said something similar about Bailly and he only ended up playing there about 3 times and that was only down to real injury issues.

If we sign Semedo I feel it'll just be a matter of time before he makes the RB spot his own. Lindelof would be a decent player at RB to deputise but doesn't offer as much as Semedo going forward.

I was wondering what would benfica do, as we had signed one of their players, surely they wont start linking us with another one, as if we wanted two from them, we would have asked for the same.Saves time no? I guess they want to sell him or he wants to leave and this is a ploy to get best price for him.

Who else would play right back, Young will probably be moving on and Darmian is now our first choice left back, although a training cone would probably do a similar job. When Rojo returns or Jones stays injury free, I think it's inevitable that Lindelof will play right back when Valencia needs a rest.

Which is exactly why signing a new RB would make sense? I'd happily see Fosu-Mensah there before Lindelof too.

I agree it makes sense, just saying I'm convinced the plan is for Lindelof to play right back when Valencia's not around.

May be 442 with Valencia as a right midfield and Nelson Semedo as an attacking right back.

DDG
Semedo Bailly Lindelof Shaw/Darmian
Valencia Herrera Pogba Mkhy/Pereira
Rashford Morata or Ronaldo

Although I don't think Jose is going to play 442 but I always wonder if Jose is going to use that 442 he used against Chelsea again. The two up front movement and pace from Lingard and Rashford were very dangerous.

So ojogo and now Sport(barcelona based) are both saying we have bid/prepare a bid for him. 30 million again.

Bailly played there last season, even got injured while at it.

Mourinho does not play Flat 4-4-2.

Would be more realistic

He's had 12 assists last season. He's the type of FB that we need when come up against teams that park the double decker.

We need an offensive upgrade on valencia.
I hope this and a LB come in.

This would be a brilliant signing, all the top teams around the world have two great attacking fullbacks.
If we bring in someone like Semedo and maybe Mitchell steps up on the other side we'd definitely score a shed load more goals at home.

I know Valencia is generally rather popular here but I certainly wouldn't be averse to bringing in someone else to contest the RB position.

It's true that Valencia had a decent season, being consistently defensibly reliable but I would argue he still offers little going forward.

When considering how to improve our football I think the addition of better fullbacks could potentially yield more bang for our buck than any one big name striker or number 10.

My favorite player this last season. He's pure dynamite going forward and manages to compensate some defensive weaknesses with his amazing speed. He scored 2 goals and made 12 assists, which are great numbers for a right back. I hope we can hold on to him for one more season.

I agree. I just find it surprising that it would be a right back and not a left back. Valencia is not amazing going forwards but compared to Darmian he's Alves at his peak.

Although ofc we could still be in for a left back or planning to use Semedo there in the short term.

I'd love to see this one. Reminds me a little of Evra, but with better ability in tight spaces. Would make a lot of sense in terms of Jose's system so far (RB dominating that right flank), but not in terms of neither him nor Valencia being first choice. I thought he'd be Barca bound and would not enjoy him going to City (far more so than Silva).

Please be true. Think he'd be outstanding for us in the long term.

:devil::devil: Love to see this happen. Finally a signing I can get excited by. And even though its Benfica we can no longer rule it out. Will watch this one closely.

Valencia has played 570 games and will be 32 before the season starts. It would make sense for us to buy an RB, they can fight it out this year and then Semedo can be the clear starter in 2018-19, Valencia the backup (aged 33) and then he's gone in 34.

I do think this would mean the end of Darmian, unless we're just letting him, Shaw and Blind fight it out at LB.

Aa good as Valencia is, he is the wrong side of 30 and is unlikely to start getting younger. Need to find a new rb sooner rather than later

If he is good then how come he isn't starting for the NT?
Cedric Soares consistently performs to a high level for the NT, I believe. Not really had the chance to displace him. There's also Ricardo Pereira who was at Nice who has had a very good season. Portugal have a few decent RBs it seems.

he had a very good season which he needed because prior to that he'd been poor. He getting older, he's 31 now and I still don't rate his final pass. I'd gladly welcome some competition for him at right back.
