NBA 2016-17

For whatever reason, they seem to get away from everything they have been doing previously at the beginning of the fourth quarter
Yep, it has happened more than once this season and Kerr needs to execute the finishes better, no matter how big the lead is because when a tight situation arises the players aren't prepared of being calm and composed in handling that. They lost the game after leading 90-66, which is obviously as big an indication as you can have that you can't take a single minute for granted at this level.

In Durant's defense, he usually is good enough to pull it off when he goes ISO but it shouldn't be happening often as he's obviously bound to miss as well.

Rose went missing before last night's game. People were actually worried about him but it turns out that he was likely in Chicago (Noah confirmed after the game that he contacted him and was fine).

Agreed. They'll be a tough playoff opponent for any team in the West.

True that. They are not a team who will get 60+ wins in a season but are always hard to beat. On the other hand if Portland make it there, I bet Golden State will absolutely love playing us.

Steph Curry having a down season....Don't care about the points (they were always going to fall with the addition of Durant).

But, his 3 point and FG average overall are down significantly.

Really nitpicking here because last season was ALL TIME GREAT....

Nice one, Blazers, nice one. Perfect birthday present.

Curry was the best player in NBA (not only just the MVP) up to the finals, last season. I think that his stats were going to go down nevertheless this season, but probably they have gone down a bit more than they should have.

For all Curry's so called woes, his only real problem this year has been his three point shooting. Below are this seasons numbers vs his first MVP year. His shooting from inside the arc is actually up vs two years ago 54.8% vs 52.8% but his three point percentage is significantly down. Consider, however the fact that he went 0-10 against the Lakers, 0-8 against the Clippers and 1-11 vs the Bucks from 3 point land. Without these games he is very much in line with his first MVP season. So let's just say in 2016-17 he's only as good as 2014-15 MVP Steph for 36 out of 39 games. Crisis averted.

He's still shooting bloody 40 per cent from three. People obsess over these numbers but this is still pretty amazing. CJ is having a tremendous season and he's 42% from 3-point range. JJ Redick whose main ability is 3-point shooting is 41.4% over his career, Lillard who is a very good 3-point shooter is 36.8% over his career and 34.9% this season (admittedly he's having an average season after a hot start).

I'd really love it if Kerr asks Durant to step back a bit for the big game on Monday and let the Splash Brothers revert to how they played last season and put on a real show.

Giannis Antetokounmpo stats this season compared to last one:

Points per match have increased from 16.9 to 23.2.
Assists per match have increased from 4.3 to 5.6.
Rebounds per match have increased from 7.7 to 8.7.
Steals per match have increased from 1.2 to 1.8.
Blocks per match have increased from 1.4 to 2.
3 point shooting accuracy has increased from 0.257 to 0.295.
2 point shooting accuracy has increased from 0.506 to 0.533.
Free throws accuracy has increased from 0.724 to 0.779.

All this, while minutes per match have slightly decreased from 35.3 to 34.7.

His improvement this season has been nothing short of extraordinary, in addition to being arguably the best dunker in the league nowadays. From young players, I think that he is second only to Anthony Davis, and he's closing the distance. He simply cannot be guarded anymore and is already a James-lite.

The other teams will suffer if Giannis continues like this.

Is Karl Anthony Towns already the best center in the league?
Nah. Boogie and Gasol are the best overall. I prefer Gasol and what he brings on the ball. Gobert has been the best defender this season. KAT and Embiid are both generational talents for me. I have money on Embiid to go on to be the best among the young ones.

Probably yes. Was thinking of those two when I made the post, but I think it is quite close really. Gasol is easily the best when it comes to defense from those three, but I think that both Boogie and Towns are better at attack. Quite crazy though, Towns just celebrated his 21th birthday.

I haven't seen much of Embiid, but his numbers are out of this world. 19.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in only 25.2 minutes per match on his first ever season are spectacular numbers. Really, on KAT, him and Davis there is finally another group of great big man players. Lets hope they can reach Shaq, Duncan and Garnett heights.

Embiid is incredible talent as well. 76ers were right to wait those two years for him. Now they only need to draft a proper point guard in the Summer. They'll have plenty of to choose from: Lonzo Ball, Marquelle Fultz look the best prospects but there's also Ntikilina from France, Dennis Smith, De'Aaron Fox - all are top 10 prospects. No better time to be looking for a point guard with your pick. They'll likely also have second lottery pick from Lakers as it's only top 3 protected and Lakers don't look that terrible to defend it this year again. They could likely have a completely new backcourt to pair with Embiid and Simmons for years, exciting times ahead!

I think Gasol's average rebounding, especially lack of offensive rebounds, are a bit of a drawback. He's only getting 6.1 RPG and only 0.8 ORB. Cousins is getting 10.0 RPG with 2.1 ORB, Towns is getting 11.9 RPG with 3.5 ORB (8th in the league only behind absolute rebounding machines: Howard, Drummond, Whiteside, Gobert, Thompson, Noah, Robin Lopez - none of them have anywhere near Towns' overall game). Even Embiid has 7.6 RPG with 2.0 ORB.

It's a bit of a shame 76ers did not get a first overall pick in 2015 draft, they would have almost certainly selected Towns with it and a duo of Embiid and Towns (both would IMO work fine as power forwards, especially Towns who is incredibly athletic) would absolutely tear the league apart (unless they'd have used that pick on Russell which was also a possibility - still much better than Okafor).

Do you guys listen to any NBA podcasts? I don't really know where to begin as I believe there are a fair few.

LeBron is such a diva. Flagrant foul my arse.

Good win though.

That was a massacre. Curry was so good in the first half, and Warriors defense was incredible.

Identical to the last January game between these two. Cavs were always going to surrender given the run on the road leading to this game. Ty should have taken off Kyrie and LeBron earlier.

Any other quality ones aside from Lowe's? I've been listening to his solely alongside the occasional BS, but find everyone else I've tried a bit shite.

Tough loss for the Rockets. They should be beating teams like Miami though. Gordon and Harden putting up 3s like a couple of drunken sailors.

Not that there's a whole lot of difference between the 4s and 5s of this era but the upcoming class of 3s led by AD is reminiscent of the Duncan, KG, Dirk and CWeb days.

Shaq is another kettle of fish altogether. The most unique experience I've ever had while watching this sport, I doubt that will ever be repeated.

CP3 out for 8 weeks. Blake's still not back.

That's crap for Clippers. They had a hot start and looked like the best team in the league for the first 3 weeks, then injuries started to happen. They've picked up some form recently and managed to squeeze all of Paul, Redick and Rivers on one field, and were winning games for fun even without Griffin but now with CP3 gone they're basically back to the times when they struggled greatly (and lost to Lakers for the first time in a lot of years). They had a great shot at 2nd or 3rd seed but will probably end up between 5-7 now and stuggle in playoffs.

San Antonio are too good to not get the second seed, but I had Clippers dead cert for the third seed, which now looks very unlikely to happen.

Maybe even Mr Triple Double will lead his team to above Clippers.

It's what happens every season. They look hot and get overrated, CP3 goes down, Blake goes down when CP3 is back and they lose in the second round of the playoffs.
