Looks like the Kings are going to back Cousins ahead of the coach:

KINGS: Kings Relieve Paul Westphal of Coaching Duties

They looked really promising coming into the season but they need to appoint a good coach fast to stop themselves falling off track.

The Kings have looked lost recently. They have a great guard combo in Thornton and Evans, Hayes has improved the frontcourt and Cousins is a talent. Fredette is a good player to have off the bench too, they need a good coach to get the most out of them.

The Kings sacking of Westphal has nothing to do with Cousins. In fact, if Westphal hadn't been so hugely incompetent, they probably would have kept him a bit longer just to show Cousins it had nothing to do with him.

He was sacked because he's a terrible coach, no offense, had completely lost the team, among a hundred other things. We've been completely blown out in all of our losses. The team is a lot more talented than they've been playing.

Smart may not be the answer, but it's not actually possible to get worse. Worst case scenario, we stay the same.

To me the team chemistry is terrible. You need a veteran leader, for one, it reminds me of how much having Jerry Stackhouse helped the Bucks to get to the playoffs two years ago. His stats weren't that impressive, but he was a professional who understood the game, he could direct the offense in the right ways and rally the players into concentration because of his drive to win. And he played great defense, something I don't think you can say about any player on the Kings.

They drafted an actual jump shooter for the first time in memory in Jimmer and I'm not surprised he's done pretty well. With all the slashers on the Kings all he has to do is sit in the corner waiting for the defense to collapse and shoot 3's.

But it's a very selfish team, all the players are in love with their own skill and their jump shot, and I dare say they don't really understand how you play as a team to become more than a collection of individuals. They look like an All-Star team, from college perhaps, like they all just met.

They need someone like Avery Johnson or some other militant sort to lay down the law and demand the players start to play for each other and execute a team strategy. But I'd suggest some trades for some players who hate to lose and bring 100% to the game everyday. A player like Tyler Hansbrough would be great for them, someone to do the dirty work, the cleaning up and the defensive scrapping, which they only really have Chuck Hayes for, and he just arrived.

A defensive center to cover their big man is great, but they also need someone on the perimeter who can guard their best scorer, be him a point guard, shooting guard or small forward, like DeShawn Stevenson did last year for Dallas.

They need players who contribute when they don't have the ball. Coaching will only get them so far.

I agree with some of your points, and think you're wrong on others. That said, the firing of Westphal can't possibly hurt, so without getting into things too much, hopefully we see some sort of improvement. A more selfless attitude, as you alluded to, would go a long way. We need to start playing as a team and some other things will fall into place.

Chuck Hayes is our leader. I think he's done a fairly good job so far (it was more evident in the earlier games than it is now), but that's been overshadowed by complete confusion and lack of direction. And of course Hayes isn't the greatest offensive player to begin with so that hardly helps the team with its biggest problem.

The other traditional leader on the team has been Francisco Garcia, but Westphal has hardly played him. Udrih was also a very good offensive leader last year.

I think the selfishness is more of a crutch due to the confusion. The team has been willing to share the ball in the past and even show flashes of it in recent games, but ultimately the natural reaction most of these guys have when they don't know what to do is to keep the ball and worry about everything else later when the time comes. Like they all decided to just wing it. gooDevil's college all-star team comparison is apt, but I don't think it's fair to label the players as "selfish" or "in love with their own skill". Right now, nobody seems to know where to go or where anyone else is.

Oh feckin hell. Smart's been offered a two year deal already.

:wenger:

Doesn't make sense, does it. Only thing I can think of is Smart said hey, I'm not going to be a lame duck coach for a year. Either sign me for more than a season or I'm gone.

Also, per Amick on twitter:

Kings co-owner Joe Maloof tells SI that ownership had no knowledge that Paul Westphal would be making public statement about D. Cousins.

He signed his own death warrant if he done that, how stupid can you be! If his terrible coaching wasn't enough to get it done, releasing a statement without the go-ahead from the owners sure would.

Yeah I jumped to conclusions there. Obviously we can't expect him to work under an assistant's salary for a year, but I see no problem with giving him a one year deal. Then again if he held out for more I can see the front office folding. Personally I'd be happy to tell him to shop around for a new job while we shop around for a new coach if he isn't happy with a one year deal, but I suppose that's why I'm not running things.

I'm perfectly happy to accept that we simply just don't know what went on. On principle I have a hard time accepting anything that comes from any of the Maloofs at face value.

Apparently the Warriors now want Howard so they can try and trade him before the deadline.

Man a doubt OT! Atlanta just sucks. They should have beat them in regular time and they messed up. Get this game over with because I want to see Lakers-Portland.

LOL finally!

I know Miami won, but got to say, Atlanta had a big hand in that!

Bosh played great, but he could barely walk at the end of the game..

So now Wade is injured, James is injured, and Bosh is dead. Lucky for Miami they don't have a game tomorrow..

EDIT: One more thing.. That 3-pointer by Bosh to tie it in the end of the regular time? Are you kidding me?!

Lakers are struggling this half. The pace of the Blazers giving them problems. But then again that is nothing new, the pace of PG's has always given problems to the Lakers these past few seasons.

Derek Fisher has played 503 consecutive games, which the longest active streak in the NBA right now. That is amazing. He is the Iron Man and he reminds me of Giggs in that aspect.

Wow, what a comeback by the Kings! Down 21 and come back to win it by 3!

Cousins and Evans were both amazing, Thornton came up big down the stretch too! That's what a young and energetic team should look like! So proud of them. Well done to Smart on his coaching debut for the Kings, was nice to see some positivity from the Kings bench.

Cousins was ripped by Legler the other night. Sounds like this Cousins is just another 'me' player with a great sense of self-entitlement.

Couldn't be more wrong. I absolutely hate when mainstream media tries to cover Cousins, it's always the same lazy diatribe. He certainly has his problems, but he is NOT a me-first player. The guy is immature and cannot control his emotions, but he is a nice guy. And immensely talented. He dominated tonight, and was a huge reason that we made the comeback. He's not always a grump, just look at him seek out Smart and give him a big hug after the game. He got fouled out towards the end of the 4th and he was our biggest cheerleader.

I am impressed with the Blazers. They have a good team with depth. They will go far this time in the playoffs. A good starting 5 and then they have Crawford, Batum and Thomas coming of the bench. I think if they can get two good role players, they might be good enough to challenge for the finals.

It was only a home win against Milwaukee, but it was certainly a nice comeback.

Pretty feckin happy right now. Stats don't show the improvement, but I'm extremely happy with how the team played.

Our low shooting percentage and low assist numbers this time were just a byproduct of missing open shots and not awful shot selection. This was our fifth game in six nights so I can forgive the missed shots, especially since they hit just enough to eek out a victory. Interestingly enough they shot 47% if you take away all the threes they missed (most were open due to kickouts, which should make gooDevil happy).

Not having Bogut hurt the Bucks, but we took advantage by swarming the boards (55-31). 23 offensive rebounds led to 20 second chance points. We do seem to miss a lot of putbacks (which contributes to the overall poor shooting) because the big men are still trying to be too cute with the ball. I expect this from Chuck Hayes, but Cousins, Hickson, and Thompson are far too explosive to get cute with the ball that close to the rim. I'd almost rather they just haul the ball down and pull it back out to run another play, but if you're down double digits, you can't always afford to do that. At the very least they did manage to draw a lot of fouls during those second-chance scrambles and that's ultimately where we won the game tonight. Also, another thing to make gooDevil happy: the guards initiated the offense the majority of the time while the big men spent much more time in the low post.

25/30 from the line vs 13/21 from the Bucks. The extra hustle was evident all over the place, especially at the glass. The team played like they wanted to be out there and wanted to win for themselves, for Keith Smart, and for the fans. Only 11,000 in the crowd tonight (who can blame them really considering the opponent and the team's performance the past few games) but they were making some serious noise.

Next time around, it'd be nice to not go down 21 against a bad team without its best player, but we'll take what we can get 4 hours into the new coach's tenure. We'll see how well the team keeps this up. Day off tomorrow. First practice Saturday. Orlando's coming for a visit on Sunday.

Jeez, I didn't realize the didn't have Bogut, I'm amazed they were able to build a 20 point lead without him, amazing.

The Bucks are really quite poor, without Bogut they're bad. But I don't mean to rain on your parade, just suggesting you not read to much into it.

It's not the biggest win (certainly not beating the Lakers on our opening night :D), but this was the third night of our back to back to back and our sixth game in five nights.

We played NY without Amare and got destroyed. We played Memphis without Randolph and got destroyed. We'll take Milwaukee without Bogut and nearly getting destroyed but coming back to win a few hours after a coaching change. Few complaints from me.

Edit: And I like Bogut. Overrated or not, he's an important piece to the Bucks and they missed him tonight.

Ya, it wasn't an amazing win or anything, but when you've had to endure the crap we've had to watch, it was a huge improvement. It was all we could have asked for given the circumstances. Hopefully we can use it to push on, because we're much more talented than our performances would indicate.

I already like Smart much more than Westphal. I'm not dubbing him the saviour, but at least he knows how to communicate to the players, and does more than just sit on the sideline looking like he's about to throw up.

Two days rest will do us good. 5 games in 6 nights is tough going.

Kobe put up the big numbers with a hurt wrist! Not sure what to make of the Lakers' start to the season, one day good one day bad. Defense has improved but our perimeter shooting is terrible and the bench might as well not bother shooting.

Saw a bit of the Magic's game and Howard played very well. I really hope we don't sit back and just let him go to another team. Bynum is proving himself he is a very good player this season but I'm not sure we can rely on him to remain fit for the entire season and I don't think Kobe trusts him enough to help get himself more rings.

Lakers made a mistake not taking David West and Andre Miller of the free agents list.

Could the Lakers have signed West? They're already over the cap of course, I'd think they'd have been limited in what they could have offered him.

But they gave away Odom and signed a few players. Surely they would have had a little space to accommodate West.

They were $25 million over the luxury tax threshold at the start of last year. That means they were even more over the cap. I don't know who else they got rid of, but I highly doubt that adds up to over the $30 million or so they needed to clear out to get under the cap.

To get West they would've had to do a sign and trade.

Edit: The players they signed must have been less than the midlevel exception. David West is probably worth more than the midlevel exception (or what they had left of it).

Yeah, they were definitely still over the cap without Odom, which I believe means they can only use the exception offers, which are smaller than a player like West would expect to receive. Which is the whole idea, as I understand, to create some parity.

As a Pacer fan, it sure means a lot more to us to have West than in would have meant to the Lakers fans. He becomes our best player, instead of the 4th best in LA.

Though as a Lakers fan I should also say with West we would have been favorites for the title, though he'd probably have to play off the bench, like Odom.
