Nani will reignite our charge to the title

Its not "all about" that at all. I mean he plays central midfield for his country, he wouldnt do that if he needed to be pinned to the touchline to play well. He could play much in the same way Park does but offer more going forward.

Yeah I know he does that for his country, though I've never seen it. Don't really see what he would bring to a central midfield, though sometimes you can be surprised.

Park does what he does well because he hassles, his work rate is top notch and he reads the game very well and knows which spaces to occupy. Perhaps Valencia can do the same, but I don't think so personally.

I think he would look very very unnatural on the the left. His best work for us this year has come from beating his man on the outside.

At the end of the day chances are Valencia's not going to be very good on the left, and is unlikely to be an option there.

It's whether you think Nani's that much worse on the left that he shouldn't be playing there, and if what Valencia brings on the right is enough to force Nani to play there.

I don't really think we've seen enough of either of them - Nani in his current form and just Valencia all-round - to be sure.

But right now I'd have it like this, assuming Nani could keep this level up consistently which is perhaps a bit optimistic:

Nani on the right - 8
Nani on the left - 7
Giggs - 8
Valencia - 7
Park - 6

I think I'm probably underrating all of them bar Giggs, but I wasn't arsed about sticking in .5's, it confuses things.

Essentially right now I think our most potent wing-partnership is Nani-Giggs, assuming Giggs can get back up to the level he has done, but long-term I see us best off with Nani left, Valencia right, and I do think that will somewhat limit Nani's effectiveness but such is life.

You're using a lot of numbers today Brwned.

Personally I think Nani has the potential to be a world beater from the left wing. Being relatively two footed, and being able to dribble with both feet (something Valencia doesn't do btw) makes him unpredictable.

If he keeps his form, maintains his confidence then I see no reason for why he shouldn't be tearing teams apart from the left. He can go left on the outside, go inside and shoot, or go inside and cross with his right - like Rooney often does when he is on the left.

I did not see yesterdays game though.

I'm really not sure at all right now, I think we'll need to see more of Nani on the left when confident to see - we'll have a better idea by the end of the season, but I've a feeling he'll never be quite as good on the right until he's fully matured and wingers often take a long time to mature.

Exactly what I think. He's perfectly able to play on the left. We know he's effective on the right, but with a little more grooming, and a bit more practise crossing with his left foot, then we could have quite a commodity: a dynamic left winger that cuts in

Anybody see Evra's interview on mutv talking about Nani wanting to be a killer and how he doesn't tell him 'well done' after his last few games because this should be normal

Actually the 'killer' remark was about Rooney. Evra was asked what he thinks of Rooney's form and he said Rooney's started playing more centrally and he's got the hunger now to score the goals. He's become want to be a killer. :D I watched that on MUTV with Erwin breaking down the united-arse game. It was a great interview with paddy. He's done enough on the pitch and off it to convince me he should be made captain when the likes of Neville and Rio aren't playing.

It's interesting that he seems to have jumped above Vidic in the captaincy que now. It's the one and only thing that makes me think that there might be something in the Vidic rumours, but hopefully it's just because Fergie thinks Evra is a better captain.

Nani on the left may be where he ends up, but for now he's miles better on the right and its important we keep him there. Because regardless of who plays on the left and how well they do it, the combination of Nani right and Rooney through the middle is our biggest threat. Nani feeding the quality he does from the right and not giving the ball away much as he does on the right, and Rooney taking those quality chances created.

So maybe in 1 or 2 seasons when Nani has continued to mature and grow as a player he can be the solution on the left. But until then? He'll continue to let himself down with passes behind players now and again - for some reason he tends to be quite inaccurate with this pass, coming inside onto his right foot and finding a player just outside the box. From the other side he makes the passes from the outside with ease, accurate and to the feet of the player. But coming in from the other side its his downfall. And also its harder for us to expolit Nani's crossing and chance creation from the left. And the crossing is the main thing he's brought to the table this season. So he needs to be playing in the area we get most joy from it.

As for Valencia, he's already played on the left for a period this season. It wasnt long but in that time I dont think he gave the ball away and he played some good passes in behind for Evra to overlap him. That was a good example of what he can bring to that role. As for his pace and going "on the outside", he can stretch his legs when we counterattack and he can use his good dribbling ability to manoeuvre himself onto his right foot in one on one situations, has the speed to go outside the defender and then come back in onto his right, could use the outside of his foot to cross which Ronaldo did often when played on the left and so on. Valencia seems quite an intelligent player, it really shouldnt be a stumbling block as he really doesnt have to use his left foot often with Evra overlapping him. And even though thats true, his left foot is actually solid - I've seen him score with it for Wigan and cross well with it for us a few weeks ago before Nani's run. Its there and waiting for him if he just had the confidence to use it. Playing on the left he would most likely gain the confidence to use it.

Nani - Exclusive Interview

REJUVENATED Nani intends to hold his head high in United's gallery of the greats.

This year, the Portuguese winger has answered his critics in spectacular style. Last summer the 23-year-old was among the most likely of United players to be heading for the Old Trafford door.

Having signed from Sporting Lisbon for £18m in 2007, his form in his 73 appearances for United up to the end of last season put a huge question mark over his future with the Reds as he failed to win over his critics.

The majority of supporters and expert observers were unconvinced Nani could become United material but despite interest from around Europe, Reds' boss Sir Alex Ferguson kept faith with his Portuguese international.

And his faith has been paid back in buckets. Since New Year Nani has begun to silence his doubters.

His part in the clinical destruction of Arsenal at the Emirates was the highlight, but impressive displays against Hull, City and Portsmouth have seen him build a consistent return. Now the player is making the kind of headlines he's been dreaming about.

"I came to United because I wanted to impress and to make good stories. I didn't want anyone saying when I left that Nani was at United but he did nothing," Nani told MEN Sport.

"When I leave eventually I want the fans to remember me as a big player for the club. I want them to say that Nani did well for United. That is what I want.

"I don't think people have seen me like that so far. But I am young. I have time on my side. We will see what happens over the next few years.

"I am sure there were some clubs who wanted to buy me in the summer. I am at the best club in the world so everyone wants to buy United players because they know we have quality.

"I never wanted to go. When you are feeling low and things aren't going well, you do feel alone. There have been times like that. But I never thought about quitting and going back to Portugal.

"I am so happy here. The most important thing is to feel at home and I feel at home now. That is a good feeling.

"My form has been very good recently but I know I can do better. I will work hard to do that.

"I know everyone is surprised that suddenly I am the man who is playing very well. But I am so happy that everyone is speaking about me now.

"I think I have probably changed people's opinions of me. That is very good. Players like to be in this situation. You want the fans to be with you and feel confident. You want to media to be writing good stories about you.

"Everyone in the club is giving me good support and telling me good things about me. This is all very good.

"It is important for a player to feel this way to be able to be in good form and full of confidence. I am feeling like that now. I am so happy."

Nani has been aware that he hadn't been flavour of the month many times with United fans and the critics also had a downer on him.

But the winger says his character got him through the difficult times.

"I was in a bad position sometimes and it wasn't easy to get up again. But I have shown I don't get depressed too easily," he adds.

"Of course, your confidence does suffer on occasions and you get down but I am the sort of person who can get back up quickly. I am a strong personality. I am always forward-looking.

"If you are not a strong character then it will drag you down and you won't be confident or look to the future anymore. But I am not like that.

"One thing I know I am sure about is that I have the quality to be one of the best in the world. I can achieve that.

"I always felt it would happen for me. I know my quality."

Nani accepts he's had tough times and his form hasn't always been consistent but he believes the picture has been painted bleaker that it really is.

"I thought I did well in the past," he says. "People sometimes seem to remember all the bad things. But if you go back and look at some of the good things I have done here then you will see very good games.

"I have actually achieved more in the past than people give me credit for. I have been here two years and won two leagues. I have scored goals and played more good games than now.

"But people seem to pick on the bad bits and highlight the good bits at the moment. I just have to keep those good moments going now.

"I was disappointed at the start of the season because I had started well but then had my ankle injury. That was a blow.

"But since that has cleared up I have been able to work hard every day in training and prepare for my chance. Once you get the opportunity you have to keep hold onto it."

Nani's recent form was put down to Fergie employing him on the right wing instead of the left side he's occupied for the majority of his games for the Reds.

But the winger says he's not bothered which side he plays on.

"My right foot is my stronger one but I don't have a preferred position," he says.

"I can do it on either side. You saw against Portsmouth that I was still in form when I was back on the left.

"If you are feeling confident it doesn't matter which side of the pitch you are on or in which area you are playing. It is all about confidence."

Nani's form has also been endorsed by his Portuguese international team-mate and former United colleague Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Real Madrid star has remained in regular contact with his buddy.

"Cristiano is a good man and he has been very pleased for me," Nani says.

"We speak a lot on the phone and we text each other. He was a great help for me when he was at United and now he's happy that things are going well for me at the moment."

Nani - Exclusive interview - Manchester Evening News

Things are coming together nicely for him at the moment. All he needs do is keep his confidence and continue to express himself like we know he can.

Nani can be new Ron

United defender believes Portuguese is a matchwinner

Manchester United veteran Gary Neville believes team-mate Nani is beginning to demonstrate that he can follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Nani has been a frustrating figure for those at Old Trafford in the two-and-a-half years since his £17million move from Sporting Lisbon.

But the winger is starting to show signs that he has finally settled at United after impressive displays against Hull City, Manchester City and Arsenal.

Ahead of Wednesday's trip to Aston Villa, Neville thinks Nani's real ability is becoming evident and that the Portuguese simply required time to build confidence, as was the case with former United star Ronaldo.

Defender Neville said in The Sun: "Nani's performances against Hull City, Manchester City and Arsenal have been absolutely fantastic.

"He has incredible ability, and when he performs like he did against Arsenal he is unstoppable. Players like Nani, who have such high skill levels, rely on confidence.

"We hope the level of performance, determination and skill he has shown in the last few games can be maintained until the end of the season because he's a matchwinner for us. I think Nani can be anything he wants to be.

"People expect so much from young players, but it sometimes takes time. It took time for Cristiano Ronaldo to settle in at United as well."

More support from Gaz Nev.

With Nani its always polemic. Some bad games and people dont think he's good enough to start for us, some good games and he's the next Ronaldo. This cycle will continue. But he's playing well now, he's happy and he's confident. Keep him on the right for big games, please.

I think I've been pleased with just about every interview Nani's given after he came here. He can be a bit of a pain on the pitch, with his fictional back injuries and whatnot, but his attitude seems very commendable. Maybe he's a bit too modest actually, maybe he could do with some of Ronaldo's staggering self-confidence.

Yeah, he always comes across really well in interviews.

took a step back today. Most likely factors:

1. red care v Villa took a chunk of confidence out of him
2. isolated a bit and without an overlapping fullback left two or three around him and he panicked
3. poor intial crossing got him a bollocking and seemed frusterated.

hopefully a temporary thing though I'm sure people will reignite the nani has no future train

He wasn't that bad but he was dwelling on the ball a little instead of keeping it simple like Valencia did, get half a yard and a cross it, thats all that was needed.

Think he stuggled to get a foothold in today's game and get on the frontfoot. Regardless, it wasnt a good performance. He did put in 1 good cross with his left but the rest was wasteful and thats something we've seen before when he has a poor game. He also took on his fullback very little which is something he'd started doing more often during his good run in the side. Valencia on was clearly the right move to make.

I think one of the causes of this apparent slump was taking him off the right when he was in great form. We didnt need to mess with things, we could have played him for more matches on the bounce on the right as he was performing brilliantly there. But its done now and hopefully he'll bounce back. I'm sure our fans will remember the good things he brought to the side for a bit longer, so he has a bit of time to find his form again. And of course a break from the side now.

I wouldn't say he was back at his old self, as he tried to do the right thing, the execution was just lacking today unlike the Stoke game.

He tried his best to help out Rafael against Ronaldinho, and I thought they did quite well together after the first 10 minutes.

He had the ball around 6 times in attack today; two overhit crosses, one good cross with no one in position, one misplaced through ball after Rooney stopped his run, one miscontrolled touch and a good 1-2 pass to set off our first goal.

After his first two crosses Valencia started to over play it as well.

Nani didn't take full advantage of the positions he got himself in but he wasn't woeful either

Spot on. I'm not that dissapointed either because he is showing application and the desire/brain to do the right thing. The execution or the ability went lacking tonight. Nothing much to fuss about really.

They were marking him too tightly, occasionally doubling up on him. We needed Valencia's pace and ability to get past his marker and whip in a few crosses. Nani should've started on the left.

Exactly. He wasn't as bad as people made him out to be. He made the proper decisions that just didn't come off. I'm sure that he will come back playing well as his footballing brain seems to be in the right place (including today). You can't be tremendous everyday, this is just a blip.

Yeah. Just wasteful crossing but he did ok. Annoying thing is he is now gone for a 3 weeks which means he could lose all the form he had built up recently.

Wasn't absolutely shit but wasn't good enough either.

Didn't quite regress to his really bad form earlier in the season but a lot of the same old flaws on display. Rooney's bollockings didn't help his fragile confidence, that's for sure.

Rooney's been bollocking him for years! He must be used to it. If not, he needs to grow a set. Do you notice how nobody ever says anything to Rooney when he loses the ball, despite him actually losing it quite a lot?

He had a bad game while taking mostly correct decisions, so i wouldnt be too worried.

Well wasnt one of his better games however i thought he improved as the game went on.

For his first game back in the league after suspension, playing in a 4-3-3 without a proper lone striker, it will do. Expect a bit more but not as crap as most people were thinking during the first half. Had some nice interplay when we had more people in the box and fluky as it was, had a hand in our goal.

I however do not think the free left winger role suits him unless we play a 4-4-2 where our midfield can dominate. I was impressed by our wingers backtracking today, carrick/gibson were sloppy today and nani made some long sprints to help out.
