My Xbox died last night

It does often amaze me when people overlook what Halo1 was and did for console games, especially a up and coming games reviewer.

Not only did it introduce console gamers to the world of high res texturing combined with shading effects like Bump mapping (i.e it looked pretty), but most importantly the A.I paved the way for many of the systems and theories used today. Plus it was a lot of fun to play to boot.

I would expect something like COD4 to better some aspects of it, that's how it should be. However to blow off a game that redefined the genre on console systems (not since since Perfect Dark), is a bit silly.

XBox hardware introduced those things (or at least the possibility to transfer them into the console space with minimal fuss), which were hardly new. Gets out book...

If you're having a go at me, i never said that original Halo wasn't superb. Its the only one completed. Its just the fact that the rest of the series were essentially Halo 1 with slightly improved graphics and the ability to wield 2 guns at once.

Yes, bump mapping. p744, c16.3.3 - The Systems Programming Series - Computer Graphics Principles and Practice, second edition in C. - Foley - van Dam - Feiner - Hughs.

Blinn [BLIN78b] developed a way to provide the appearance of modified surface geometry that avoids explicit geometrical modeling.....

It then goes on to give the algorithm.

1978 Lambs! Blinn J.F., "Simulation of Wrinkled Surfaces," SIGGRAPH 78 286-292.

Not a clue whats going on here.. but..

I wasn't overlooking Halo. I meant to say that I dont think much of Halo 3. I hardly ever play it online, saying that, I primarily use my xbox live and ps3 online for sports games.

RedLambs thinks that Bungie developed the algorithm for bump mapping or rather were the first to introduce it into the console space.

Its times like this we made that deal where you do the clever hardware stuff :)

Aye, I'm arguing that it wasn't Bungie or Halo 1, but rather XBox hardware that introduced this and other effects. They were hardly new in hardware, only new to the console space. Bungie were not doing anything out of the ordinary in that regard.

Ah I see. So you are arguing that without the Xbox hardware inplace - Bungie would have not been able claim to bring it to the hardware, or even to the console?

PS2 and Game Cube could emulate it in software (or fake the effect), it's only an algorithm after all, but they could not do it like XBox, because it was the only machine to be able to so in hardware.

Alrighty then, thanks for clearing that up. I just saw lots of numbers and symbols, and as we have all discovered, im pretty simple.

 Nice try Weaste old buddy, unfortunately I'm too busy tonight to have this argument. You know what I meant, it's interesting though who didn't ;)

I'll possibly be around later tonight or tomorrow to indulge you and help with that boredom.

No your not, quit pretending.

Anyway, how far back into gaming do you go? I presume you played a lot of PSone/N64 stuff, but Snes/Genesis?

Well, im 21. Relative Newbie in the department im sure - but i do have a brother who has the majority of consoles from the past 25 years. From this I have played on many of the older systems, SNES/Genesis included - but from my age, cant remember most of it.

Got a PSone when I was around 9 and stayed up all night playing V-Rally - immense.

You should get some emulators and relive the older days, it will help you further enhance your knowledge on what to look at in games. The more general knowledge you have, the better. Believe me, I've met plenty of 'games journalists' and the ones that impress most are the ones with a real passion for games and a good grounding in their history.

What's your favourite game? You mention Bioshock, have you ever played System Shock?

Oh and of course, you and Soggy are back in my good books if you both like Halo 1 but are bitterly disappointed in the shockingly poor sequels.

But hey, that's what happens when you design multiplayer first.

I didn't randomly pull that shit off the net you know.

Said book.

That type of shit used to do my head in when they made us build software renderers.

Note logo on monitor, excuse one on mouse.

Haha, I bet that was a good bedtime read!

Anyway, I never said Bungie invented shader effects, or the art of simulating real texture.

M$ mouse huh? Interesting...

I played an emulated version of it onmy laptop, was a great game.

I had a genesis, megadrive and snes emulator, before my laptop died. Used to have a Playstation controller port for the computer too, so could play with a better controller.

I will get the emulators back once ive been on holiday commencing on friday.

Hard to choose a favourite game - Its hard to choose a sports game because every year they come out with minor improvements, or in some series case, more faults.
Ill always have great memories of Streets of Rage, Street Fighter, Sonic 2, James Pond, Winter Olympics and the Dizzy series, purely from the thrill of just playing them from when I was young.
Now though, it varies - I thought BioShock was a real different type of game, and kept my interest throughout - but I couldnt say it was a clear winnerby any means. How about you Lambs?

By the way, I dont take myself ultra serious for reviewing games. I know people with a larger knowledge such as yours must get frustrated by me types - but I was taken on to review games purely as I thought of them!

And Xbox acheivements revolving around the fact you are in the top 5 in the world at a game, and not little points in the single player..

Not at all, it's all about opinions and I've met enough people like you at trade shows to know that most are true gamers at heart. I also know how much it can cost (or most importantly how little) it can cost to get a decent review out of your guys ;)

On a whole though, I enjoyed reading your reviews. They were a little off balanced at some points, especially with your final scores, but on the overall entertaining. Are you trying to do it for a career?

No, not at all - I am going into a career, of the ultimately different route of personal training!

I do love computer games, they were too much of my Uni life, and there is nothing better than ... "Fifa mate?" as an ice breaker.

Thanks, and obviously, even though its only part time I do need constructive criticism. The main one from my first few from my boss was

"cut down on the scouser jokes".

Anyway, I have just, and obviously very lately reviewed Lost. Ill post it, see what you think.

Lost was and is a massive television show revolving around the survivors of a plane crash on a desert island. The plot has more turns in it than Hockenheim, and trying to explain it would take longer than having Rebecca from Big Brother read you a Jean Paul Satre novel. However, having watched quite a fair amount of the TV show, I slotted into the game relatively easy.

The game however relies too heavily on prior knowledge of the show. Had I not seen the show before, I would have been as lost as a scouse student without Wikipedia.

The gameplay is interesting though, and playing the part of a photographer you are subject to various flashbacks detailing your history as you attempt to discover more about the island you are marooned on, and yourself. After some getting used to, the camera controls are easy to get to grips with, but can be a challenge to master. The game is as forgiving as Jeremy Clarkson is about pollution though, and all key pictures must be perfectly focused and aimed. Another large part of the game is puzzle solving – which starts off as hard as it finishes. This will probably require a lot of guess work at first, or a handy prompt from the internet, but once you get the hang of it, its not too bad. In the way that should you be allergic to fish, having a goldfish swimming in your mouth wouldn’t be too bad – you put up with it, but its irritating.

The game is short though. 5 hours and 32minutes short in my case. Plus, after this, I had no real desire to play it again. Apart from of course, the fact I almost had 100% of the achievement points and it was rude not to finish it off. So, silly to buy it? Yes really. Feel free to rent it though, especially should you be a fan of the show. Plus, in that time you should be easily able to complete it.

Just to end, the graphics and the game look superb. The fact that you see little apart from jungle didn’t deter me much either, but this may because I have been stuck in a lift for a longer period of time.

New Game Scores, 1 word sum up and buy or not to buy..

Lost : Via Domus (Xbox, Ps3, PC) - 6/10 – short-flight – Don’t Buy (Rent)

I just got a flashing ring of death! And it says its out of warranty, say they are going to charge me £50 to repair the bugger! I dont have £50 :(
Wouldnt mind but this is the second time its happened in a year, i would have expected them to renew the warranty from the last time.
Am well not impressed.
Anyone know the best places to sell games?

Yeah, but could end up getting next to nothing for half my games, i need something to fund my drinking during uni.

I, too, have a Snes emulator, and also a GBA and NES emulator........on my phone!

FF6, Chrono Cross, etc all ready to play whenever. :D

Downxandxout have you phoned them up?

They should still fix your Xbox for free, they did for me last week and my warranty had ended 6 months ago.

Nope, didnt think that there would be any point, but i'll give it a go. Did you just shout at them down the phone?
