Musk | Fascist

 why does this look like a scene from thunderbirds

Yeah, I have to admit I've been really shocked by all this. Two friends accused me of being brain-washed for thinking it's a Nazi salute, and manipulated by the media.

I think it's reasonable to argue it might have been an awkward mistake or whatever, and not intended as it looked, but to argue, in absolute terms, that it definitely wasn't a Nazi salute is seriously strange to me. It's the most enthusiastic and excitable looking Nazi salute I've ever seen in my life, and then he did it again
Tell your friends to walk round in public doing this if its so innocent. Better yet get them to Germany and salute some locals in a bar. They will be really friendly.

Omg they are doing the diaper/ear bandage thing again in "solidarity" with Elon.

I'm a bit disappointed these fecks are taking a job away from Brad Pitt. There's no need to go round putting swastikas on their foreheads, they openly do it to themselves now. Disgusting how out in the open they all are and how they feel empowered to act like this.

all done through social media let's not forget. Performative extremism for validation through their in-group circles. But ultimately the performative slowly creeps into the normalisation of it.

It’s not reasonable and find new friends.

This is worrying. You're at the top of a slippery slope. Find new friends.

It's cool as I'm sure the government will stamp out this stuff.......oh.

disgarding friends because they disagree with you is worrying
One some grounds yes but sticking with people who refuse to admit it was a Nazi salute isnt too worrying, especially if you give them a chance or two to see why it's wrong. After that its fair game

I meant on all grounds. Regardless of the topic, or people, if we're right there as a society it's worrying. Nobody is deliberately falling for misinformation.

This isn't disagreeing about where to eat or which team you support though. You're being gaslighted regarding Nazism (a poor choice of words, I know). But hey, to each his own, which is kind of the point.

First time he did it, maybe an awkward mistake. But he did it twice. You need new friends.

What would it take for you to discard them? What if they themselves did a Nazi salute?
I know I wouldn't ditch my friends for believing that he didn't mean the gesture in the way that we all know he did. If my friends said that they agreed with his nazi salute and what it represented or that they themselves were Nazis then yes, of course ditch them. But ditch them for disagreeing with you about what a celebrity's intentions were in a gesture they made...? If they're good friends that seems harsh.

To be clear, I think Elon is a fascist scumbag and he absolutely intended that to approximate a nazi salute.

For me any conscious action displaying racism, homophobia, fascism or sexism is enough to discard a friend. Those are lines that can't be crossed.

But in this context I've known them 20 years and they've never been any of those things are even close to it. Just kind and loving people who never discriminate against anyone.

So what else can you do but have a conversation and hear them out? If it turns out they've somehow become Elon Musk loving neo-Nazi's within the last few months I'd obviously bin them off. But in all likelihood they've fallen for some dumbass propaganda and that would suck too but I'm not discarding them as friends for a mistake like that.

Yeah the “you need new friends” is just another example of the way you’re no longer just allowed to hate what people like Trump and Musk stand for, you have to hate them in the right way. It just seems unnecessarily divisive. And it’s everywhere now.
Agreed. Competitive outrage does absolutely nothing for me and only serves to cloud the issue imo.

you should execute one of them at random. then all your other friends will fall in line. you know its what they would want.

Can't believe you have more loyalty to your friends of 20 years than to strangers on a Manchester United forum.

Concerning.

I think what is also rampant is opposition without any real action or consequences. People just sitting around, saying this is not good, but not doing anything at all to influence the situation. I am not saying that the poster in question needs to ditch their friends. But I think the question at which point one would do just that is very much relevant. And I think these discussions are very relevant and important right now, because the way things look, there is no actual and meaningful opposition to trumpism in the US.
And the way some people go about these things is nothing but apathy in the face of ascending fascism or at the very least authoritarianism.
Now @Tarrou gave a very reasonable answer to my question. But this is an important question and the answers give an insight into the minds of an opposition that is yet to form and unite in a meaningful way.
Or put otherwise: looking at the US from the pov of someone who sees the writing on the wall for their own country, can give very useful indications on what to expect at home. So I care deeply about the way people in the west but especially in the USA deal with this shitshow and how they justify their own actions or inaction to themselves and the rest of the world, what their red lines are and what moments can serve as the start of an actual counter movement that goes beyond angry social media posts.

I obviously have no insight into your friendships and you can do whatever you want, but this line is particularly interesting to me given you also said they accused you of being brainwashed about it. At the very least it's a bit scary when otherwise entirely "normal" people can engage in this kind of fervent and wilful blindness.
