Manchester Evening News ~ Moyes: We should have scored more

Again pleased with the tone Moyes is setting with his public statements. That sense of the wobbles Moyes had early on has been replaced by an assertiveness that is clearly working its way through the whole squad. Long may it continue too.

I've got to say, the decision to bring Evra off kind of annoyed me. Pointless and unrequired changes to the defence cause mistakes as seen today with it leading directly to the goal.

Same thing led to Southampton's late equaliser iirc.

I don't think substituting Evra was a mistake. Ultimately a left back should known when to step up and be in line with his defenders, that's not Moyes fault. My problem with the whole Evra situation is that he should have been rested... either today or against Stoke, thus it would have prevented the substitution that happened today.

Jones was majestic today, but I felt annoyed at his insistence on being twenty yards ahead of play in the attack that broke down that ultimately led to West Ham's counter-attacking goal. He's a defensive midfielder, there's no need for him to be furrowing ahead of play like that when we're 3-0 up.

A harsh criticism but it should be a lesson learnt for him.

Only thing I can fault Moyes with re subbing Evra is that Buttner should not be playing for United. Given Evra´s age and how much running he does it was sensible to give him a rest but I´d have Fabio or Evans at left back above Buttner every day of the week. Buttner was, and always will be, the wrong player to bring on if Evra needs resting. The fact Moyes has yet to see this yet is a black mark against the obvious progress his management of United has made recently.

One positive is that some of the underperformers such as Young, Cleverley, Welbeck etc. have stepped up a lot in the last couple of weeks and Moyes deserves credit for lifting them up. Couple that with the continued good form of Evans, Rooney, Jones and Rafa and the return of Darren Fletcher and suddenly we look a much better team.

He's not far off the old "We could have had 4 or 5 today".

Unlike big parts of that 12-match unbeaten run we've had, I felt we played really well in the last two league matches. We had that easy win at Fulham and a combative victory against Arsenal, but I never felt we played well enough in the league during that period. But in the last two games things really clicked. Granted, Villa aren't great and West Ham were even worse, but there's real purpose to our attacking and some players are showing good form. That's good progress from that abysmal match against Newcastle.

Jones can't legislate for Valencia fecking that move up as much as he did to be fair.

Massive credit to Moyes. Look at the spine of that team today. British, through and through. There's something I love about that. I mean this is the premier league after all. Look at our rivals and it's foreign players in 8 or 9 out of 11 positions.

Evans, smalling, jones, cleverly, Rooney, welbeck. Right down the middle.

He's also not been afraid to take big decisions, like breaking up the hegemony of Rio and Vidic. Ferdinand has rightly been put out to pasture. Smalling and Evans have been excellent. Smalling especially needed games to continue developing. He has such a high potential as a center half.

Jones has been immense in midfield. Bringing in Januzaj too, people say it was a easy decision; but when you are under pressure, it's never an easy decision to play an 18 yr old. No matter how decent he might look in training. Fact is Moyes did it. I'm impressed. Adnan has been a revelation.

We seem to be playing with some fluency now. It's great to see. Would love us to continue adding the best young British talent to the squad. Barkley next; then integrate Powell into the first team picture for next season. Wouldn't mind Baines at left back at all; and perhaps even Ravel may come back in 2015.

Is that you Union Jack Wheelchair?

He was playing as a CM in a two under Fergie. Here he is playing as a CM/AM with two other CM who do the dirty work. Rooney probably just doesnt have the tools to play in a Scholes role in a two man CM.
He was also playing as a third midfielder under Fergie as well. He only started playing in a two late in the season. Before then it was behind van Persie but deep enough to help out the midfield. Think about the Arsenal and Chelsea games.

No real difference to last season other than his two or three games in CM pair. that's it

Hey guys, think back to the starting lineups we put out at beginning of 11/12 compared to the one in these last couple of games. Very similar and you can see the results of playing the youngsters. More energy, more movement, more passing options, higher defensive line.

It's what i've been looking forward to see for some time now. It's clear to me that we're better off phasing out our experienced players and letting the younger ones gain more experience. We just gain more from it as a team. There will be some rocky performances but I think we should stick with it and hopefully moyes can find a way to fit Jones-Smalling-Evans in as CBs here and there because none of them deserve to be dropped on current form. Watching the game just felt like we were building toward a future. A Manchester United with some direction and purpose. Not sure if we've turned a corner but if this is what Moyes has in store for us, i really like it

Massive credit to Moyes for making us more English ? He bought a Belgian and has been giving another Belgian his chance.

The change from a 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 has really worked for him. The team has played well in the last three matches.
Yup. Our players are getting too far apart and isolated as much as before. Welcome change.

You haven't seen any improvement in the team in the last two-three matches(excluding the first half of the Stoke match)?

Oops. I meant "aren't" getting too far apart and isolated.

In fact it will be interesting to see now Kagawa and Nani in particular do if we continue moving in this direction. We're not abandoning wide play by any means but a third man in the middle just gives us an additional passing option and he's possession retention.

Agreed but I think Rooney is key to that. Of course, there is a worry he'll throw his toys out the pram over it but, he's far better there then up front.

Agreed. He's not playing in anything to far removed from his natural position or what he plays for England in the last two games. The way Fergie used him was much more like a orthodox central midfielder in that very short run he had there. I think Rooney's issues last season where more feeling marginalised and not essential to the team with RVP coming in in all honesty

One thing I wanted to put out there.

Jones's emergence as someone who has been putting in genuinely very good central midfielder performances is a massive plus for Moyes and gives him something we were all hoping a midfield signing would give the first team. I'm still not 100% convinced it's his best position but it's getting hard to argue that he's giving the side something very important there and without Carrick he is first name on the team sheet. I think Kouroux said, that Jones looks like a proper central midfielder now and not a centre back playing out of position. It's the way I am beginning to view Jones as well.

Now, I'm not 100% sure whether a Jones/Carrick partnership is ideal but on paper with Jones in this form, if Carrick can get to anything like his best form that gives United a strong basis to have Rooney drop in like he has been doing going into big games with a back four not to dissimilar to what we have been putting out recently, maybe give or take a full fit Vidic, and that looks a strong spine of the side. Add Januzaj, RVP and whomever can finally nail the other wing spot, and the starting eleven looks good IMO.

Now, back to the central midfield, I actually think the options we have there now with Jones playing like are actually better that what we have had for the last two seasons. We still have Carrick, a young quality player is emerging there and we have still to see what Fellaini can really offer as he has been unfit since we signed him. Whatever anyone thinks of Fellaini he's better on paper than what we had last season, was proven with Everton and is a first team regular for Belgium. He deserves the rest of the season to see if he can rise to playing for United.

Add Cleverley who has improved from those early season performances, Giggs playing very rarely but still offering a decent creative option and I'm far happier with the options we have in that that area of the side than I was 12 months ago. I think Anderson is on his way out in January and Fletcher will get some opportunities to see if he has anything else to offer and a decision long-term will be made on him at the end of the season. He's post surgery now so things should become a lot clearer if he still has what it takes.

We still need another central midfielder which I don't think we will see until the summer but for the first time in a long time the midfield options are becoming stocked with younger players and orthodox central midfielders rather than players over the age of 30, or in some cases 35, injury prone players and players being played out of position.

Obviously still plenty of question marks over that area of the team and a hell of a lot depends on how the likes of Carrick, Jones, Cleverley and Fellaini perform over the next six months but I for one am happier with what we have there now.

Verheijen replied to Moyes' comments in his last press conference. What a clown.

I'm really wondering what happened between Moyes and Verheijen in the past. All these attacks from the Dutchman seem very personal.

I'd say it is almost sensational! I cannot understand the man at all, this is someone who has worked with the dutch NT right? How can he make such an absolute ass out of himself? I saw that he had a lecture for coaches and other sports people in Norway, and he made his views be known on Moyes there as well

Ive mentioned this a couple of times, I attended a coaching clinic he ran earlier in the year and it was without doubt the worst coaching clinic I have ever been on. I do find it amusing that he is referring to Moyes etc as dinosaurs when the stuff he was pushing on his coaching clinic was stuff we stopped doing 10 years ago. He was an absolute knobache.

Haha, I see.. that pleases me to read :D

The pleasing thing now is that we're starting games with a bit of intensity to our play. It makes such a difference when the team comes out and really goes at the opposition from the first minute.

Forget that idiot, all that matters is our form, and it's been pretty good these last 4.

That 12 game or so unbeaten run was littered with too many draws and average displays , but these last 4 wins have been a lot better and yesterday was a classic old style United stroll.

Really need to continue it through these next 2 aways. If we can we'll be so much closer to where all the action is up the table.

It's frustrating to look where we could have been in the table had we won those two home matches. We were far from our best in those games but still could have conceivably won both with the chances we created, hitting the woodwork several times. The late goals for Southampton and Cardiff halted our momentum aswell.

Still, two more games and we'll be halfway through the season and we'll have an idea then of the size of the task for the second half of the season. Win both and we won't be too far off with some of the top teams playing eachother in the next week or so. I can't really envisage us scoring less points in the second half of the season than the first, given the troubles we've had so far, whereas some of the teams above may find the opposite.

The pic from the Telegraph page is just asking for a photoshop thread....

Let's make this clear: Fergie never left Moyes a weak squad. What he left was a skeleton with no engine. Remember a manager's team and style is determined by the center midfield. Fergie could never leave the man taking over from him a fully stocked midfield. For that man could hate the options you live him yet be stuck with them in the long term.

It can't be denied that Fergie restocked the goal keeper, center back, fullback, winger and striker departments over the last few seasons.
