Mourinho to United | Officially Announced

BBC reported back in February we had met with Mourinho. This isn't a move that has happened in the past week.
Note the phrase "after verbally agreeing a deal with the club in the last few days". Negotiations could well have been ongoing since January.

Bad timing my arse.

This is a great indication from Ed that what LvG has achieved over the last 2 years isn't good enough. I love the fact we've won the FA Cup, but even yesterday was painful. The quality of football is abysmal. So many players have regressed it's a joke.

It's a clear sign to the fans that for once the club is being run to our standards. We had some clown telling us that our standards are too high. What a farce.

I can't wait for a proper league tilt. None of this philosophy shite. We'll be competing from day one of the season. We'll batter the likes of Swansea, Bournemouth etc. (We even lost at OT to a relegated team this season. Pathetic). The players that José keeps will want to improve. Hopefully Ander and Morgan will actually start to perform as we know they can. It's wishful thinking with Memphis.

We lost a 2 legged tie against the scousers in Europe. Does it get any worse than that?

Yea agree, don't think Mendes would be flying over on Tuesday to help negotiate the arrival if its already done deal. Also don't think United would act in this manner, I believe that LVG has known for a few days that his time is over, after the FA Cup win he perhaps maybe harboured some hope for being kept on next season.

I'm glad he is gone, would have been nice to allow him the night to enjoy it but that's just how it goes. I can now look forward to going back to Old Trafford next season and not witness the same boring football we have endured for 2 seasons.

No, I mean it was signed months ago. It was signed around Christmas, long before February. The following happened much later:

Mourinho has a rule to take a new team only in the summer. That's all.
You're not still relying on that? I've already shown on a number of occasions how that statement could have been pure Jose e.g. "I'm going to United. They're going to have to sack Van Gaal and I'm their only alternative. They haven't been in contact yet but they will, I'm sure of it".

You'd need to know the full conversation before being able to rely on Moratti's statement as fact.

I am relying on logic.

You can believe what you want.

He's coming mate. That's all that counts. Let's get ruthless next year.

You simply don't negotiate with Mourinho for ... months!

It is silly even as an idea. To negotiate what? For months?

Mourinho is one the best 2 or 3 managers in the world. Discussions last for a couple of days, perhaps a week. That's all. This happened in December.

Feel for Mata though, just won cup and realises he is being sold this summer all in 1 day

Mata, despite being still a weak defensive player, has shown he will now put a shift in. So Jose may yet give him a chance.

One good news is in that cringey Sky 'exclusive', his hair was back to normal. Not the angry shaved look he had in his last months at Chavski.

Hope the time out has gotten him recharged and ready to go. The man has a point to prove next season.
Last time he got sacked by Chelsea, he went on to win the treble with Inter.
And he's done his tour with Real, so no worries of losing him this time.

So hyped for this. Best manager in the world for me.

Just hope we've given him complete control of the transfers and that he's allowed to get rid of expensive flops LVG signed.

Its been suggested that the briefing came from Mendes' camp (unsurprisingly).
I have no time for Mendes and I don't believe that Jose is an angel but this leak could really have nothing to do with the two of them at all. Maybe it was an underling who chanced at the documents whilst printing them or someone obscure within Mendes' operation who got to know this and used this to establish himself with the media. Mourinho's camp has nothing to gain by antagonising Woodward.

Ok, you just go on believing that fairy story and the rest of us will live in the real world. You really don't have a clue.

There were reports all week that Mourinho could be announced as soon as Saturday night. This was known before yesterday and I don't think Mourinho/Mendes picked up the phone to some journalist at full-time.

In the real world, when a team wants a manager and the manager wants to go to that team, negotiations are finished in hours. Not days, and certainly not months.

@Acquire Me deserves a tagline, a knighthood and a portion of cafe named after him. I just want to know, how did he know it? Hope he spills the beans.

Not far from the truth I think. An agreement was certainly finished months ago, now it will be made formal.

There's not point in blaming the club, Mendes, Mourinho. There are so many people from both sides in negotiations anyone could have let the secret out. Hands for the deal will have been shaken when BBC, and others first broke the news soon after he was sacked at Chelsea. LvG must have known many Months ago his time was up having been given assurances of his job until the end of season. This is the reason he was so confident he would not be sacked in January when questioned by journalists.

Even Lou Macari knew there will be news after the game having confirmed this to my son. Anyway, The club keeping quiet, extending season ticket renewal deadline were all indicators. Tickets sales have been slow for the season ahead. This news will now give a massive boost to sales.

I'd heard the Everton rumours and went to look on the forum to see what they thought about it. Some were convinced he'd join them, others were just hoping he would. Am I missing something? Why did they think it was possible?

I know they have a rich owner now (who doesn't) but it just seemed bizarre.

Where did he spill it? Was it Ole Gunnar's wife all along? Is he Ole Gunnar himself??
Something about someone from the club's marketing team apparently. He said it was done way back in January

Yes, I think you're spot on there

It has been made formal months ago and it sits in some lawyer's vault.

We have been waiting for the announcement only, nothing else.

We are talking about a contract for many millions. You don't play with that kind of money. There is no "understanding" and no "gentlemen's agreements". They sign and seal it. And they don't wait for months. They have lawyers that can do it in hours.

It's headline news now on BBC in the UK.
That is the most reassuring thing. It came from BBC both the time. It means it was nit some bulshit. I think to assume mendes leaked it, is wrong. The club might have asked the press not to relase it till season had ended. At the final whistle it did, and you got your press anouncement.
It was unanimous, everyone said the same thing. Tuesday will be the day according to everyone, monday he goes. I think it was done efficiently enough. Some people just need a stick to beat the club with.
When moyes was being sacked, LVG had the other boot on. I am sure he understands thats the kind of job he is in. Ancelotti said its cool, these are perils of management. Thats the way it is.

The only stories ahead of it on BBC News are a Taliban chief apparently being killed and Austria maybe about to vote in a far right president!

After that there's no bigger news in the world than Mourinho to United apparently

Nope. No formal agreement could have been made without announcing it publicly to the shareholders.

I'm just glad LVG is going out with a cup success. To be honest, he hasn't won much over the last ten years has he? When he was appointed I so wanted him to succeed. He was an arrogant swaggering geezer with a shed load of confidence and that is what we needed after Mousey Moyes. It didn't work out and this season we have seen some dire performances with the team heading nowhere. People might complain about how all this came out, but the British media are like rottweilers so you just have to bare with it and enjoy the moment regardless.

Let's put it this way, it's much easier to enjoy this FA Cup win knowing that LVG is leaving than it would have been if Ed had announced after the match that LVG would be staying to see out his contract!
