Mourinho | New old Chelsea manager

He is talking like he's in it for the long haul - I believe he will be. He says he has done his tour of Europe and he wants to settle down somewhere he loves and enjoys, he wants to build a Ferguson type dynasty at the club.

The problem is that Abramovic will probably pull the trigger if things go south again. Mourinho is the sort of man who can be consistent which may prevent him from a mid-season sacking, but if they have a poor season without trophies then Abramovic wouldn't hesitate to get rid. Mourinho may have an extreme backing from the fans that others lacked, but that wouldn't prevent Abramovic from sacking him. Ideally for Chelsea, Abramovic would accept that he's got one of the best managers in the world and wouldn't interfere with him in the slightest, but he's never been like that and never will be. I agree that Mourinho may finally want to settle down at a club, but whether he's actually allowed to or not is another matter.

Aye ... and he does it all with virtually no money to play with: the true sign of managerial genius.

Yes, because he spent so heavily at Porto to win UEFA Cup and Champions League.

His net spending at Inter wasn't so bad either, he spent £40m over two Summer transfer windows although he admittedly packed the squad with lots of poor players - Quaresma at £22m, Mancini at £13m, Mariga at £9m and Muntari at £13m were all criminal. Milito, Motta, Lucio, Eto'o and Sneijder were all shrewd buys though and won them CL.

Transfers at Madrid:

Özil at £14m - great buy, easily worth twice as much.
Khedira at £12m - good buy, also worth slightly more.
Di Maria at £29m - decent winger, overpriced by 20% at least.
Pedro Leon at £9m - poor, moved on at a loss.
Canales at £5m - poor, moved on without a loss.
Coentrao at £26m - good player, way above his market value.
Sahin at £8m - didn't work out but a good choice at that price, who knew he was a one-season wonder basically.
Varane at £8m - amazing buy.
Callejon at £4m - fair price for an impact sub.
Modric at £26m - good price for a good midfielder.
Lopez at £3m - good price for a back up keeper who played because Jose hates Casillas.

His transfer record was actually very good. Same with Chelsea really - give him money and chances are he's going to build a good team. But he can work without plenty of money too as proven by Porto.

We dont know how Mourinho will be, hes changed a lot since his time there.

This time he isnt the Champions League holder, he has the nouses of FFP and an older squad. Still, he'll probably smash it.

No fergie, 4th placed Wenger

I can see him wanting to do that but would abrahmovic stick with him if he doesn't win the league for two years in a row?

Good move for Chelsea. They will challenge for all major trophies next year.

He will still need to revamp the spine of Chelski. But regardless Mourinho statistically/historically has always guaranteed silverware everywhere he's been so its a great move for them.

I doubt they require much to be honest, Mata, Hazard, Ramires etc are a fantastic foundation to work with and knowing Roman, a couple of top notch siginings are probably imminent.

In my opinion, they are still short of depth and require a few signings.

They need to make one or may be two signings in central midfield. Romeu is not all that, Lampard cannot feature in every game and Mikel is mediocre. Ramirez is the only good central midfielder that can start most games at Chelsea at the moment.

For the positions behind the striker they have Oscar, Mata, Hazard and Moses. They need to increase the depth in those positions. Most of them kept fit this term inspite of the number of games they player but that might not happen every season.

They also may need a couple of strikers. Torres will most likely leave and Ba is not good enough to start every week at a top club. They can get Lukaku back as one though he wants to start most games and will probably ask for another loan.

Central defense and cover for the RB position may also be needed depending on the Terry and Luiz situation.

IMO, next season may be too soon for them to challenge for the title. It will again be between City and us.

I think this represents a desire for sustainability on both sides. The four year contract is telling here.

You wouldn't put it past him to win the title on in his first season as he's a brilliant manager but their squad is still a distance behind ours and even Citys imo. Their CBs are largely poor, their CMs the same (barring Ramires and an ageing Lampard), their strikers are not consistent enough for a Prem winning team. He'll need to buy genuine class in these positions before they have enough to challenge City or us.

I assume he's also made some demands about getting rid of the hangers on who undermined him last time. Michael Emenalo for one.

To be honest I don't think they are a million miles away at all.

Up front if they replace Torres with a top class striker they'll be very strong (Lukaku, Ba, New Signing with Moses as a backup). Obviously behind the striker they have Hazard, Oscar, Mata with Lampard or Moses being able to rotate. I disagree that they need more depth, they could even move Ramires further forward or play 2 up front if there was a massive injury crises.

Behind them Ramires, Luiz, Mikel and Romeu provide more than enough cover, the latter 2 being squad players.

In defence Cole is still a very good player, as is Ivanovic. They have decent depth with Terry, Luiz, Azpilicueta, Cahill and Bertrand. Obviously there is no problems in net. A top class central defender to "replace" Terry is required. I'd say Ivanovic and Azpilicueta are fine for the RB position.

Overall if they sign a quality striker and a quality central defender, with Mourinho they will be up there challenging on all fronts. Bear in mind they can do that with little to no wage increase by getting rid of Torres, Benayoun, Ferreira, Malouda and Marin.

Apparently he offered to resign but Abramovich refused.

Exclusive: Michael Emenalo’s offer to resign turned down by Chelsea

Michael Emenalo has offered to resign from his role as Chelsea’s sporting director to facilitate the return of Jose Mourinho.

It is understood that Emenalo’s proposal was immediately rejected by Roman Abramovich, the owner, who views him as an important adviser and wants to keep him at Stamford Bridge.

Emenalo’s influence emerged as a potential problem during negotiations to bring Mourinho back as manager, but Abramovich is determined to keep him and is adamant that the pair work together. Mourinho did not demand Emenalo’s removal, but the former Nigeria defender is believed to have told Abramovich that he was willing to leave if it would help to secure the former manager’s return.

Abramovich would not countenance such a suggestion and will continue to lean heavily on Emenalo for advice next season. The 47-year-old will retain responsibility for Chelsea’s transfer and scouting policies, as well as being used as a go-between for Abramovich and the manager. The Russian has made a habit of showering his managerial appointments with attention at the start of their reigns, before taking a back seat and contacting them primarily through Emenalo.

Mourinho has often struggled to work with such executive appointments in the past, as a result of his desire for complete control over footballing affairs, but he has indicated a willingness to operate within Chelsea’s existing structure in his second spell at the club.

The Portuguese barely concealed his contempt for Frank Arnesen first time around at Chelsea, with the pair repeatedly clashing over potential signings, and he was sacked only two months after the surprise appointment of Avram Grant as director of football in the summer of 2007.

He also succeeded in engineering the departure of Jorge Valdano from Real Madrid, despite the Argentinian’s status as a club legend, after his first season in Spain.

Mourinho’s willingness to work with Emenalo indicates the strength of his desire to take the Chelsea job almost irrespective of the circumstances, but it remains to be seen how such compromises will play out once he has been appointed.

Mourinho has also shown that he is prepared to accept other allowances, such as limiting the size of the backroom staff that will follow him from Madrid and retaining existing Chelsea staff, such as Steve Holland, the assistant first-team coach, and Christophe Lollichon, the goalkeeping coach.

I don't think Emenalo was at the club the last time around. I would take that offer to resign story with a pinch of salt as well.

It's an excellent move by Chelsea plus a boost for English domestic football.

Agreed. The top tier PL teams have fell slightly behind in the last few seasons. I think Mourinho will attract some top, top players to Chelski with the feck off massive cheque book he will have at his disposal.

I can see them winning the PL next year and CL soon too.

So, apparently he wants to get rid of Mata and Torres to rebuild his team.

Strange, but I suspected that he could do this after the turbulent time he had with us.

Torres I could understand, because he's a bit shit, but what would the resident Chavs think about him trying to get rid of Mata? Would that go down well?

 No way. Getting rid of their best player wouldn't exactly be the best start.

Can't argue with him wanting to get rid of Torres though.

Of course it would not go down well but be is not going to get rid of our best player. Why on earth would he do that? Ridiculous story. Is Moyes gonna dump RVP?

Torres can go for sure. I don't dislike him but there's many players better than him.

Not too sure how to take this. Times have moved on since good ole Joseph was in charge last time round. Still the guy's record speaks for itself, and Roman is gonna blow cash harder than ever before.

That is the silliest thing ive heard all week, and i've listened Andy Townsend commentate on 180 minutes of football!

Torres yes, Luiz maybe, Mata , no chance.

Unless we really are getting Ronaldo!

That's rubbish. Mata is Chelsea's best player and Jose will want to build a team around him, not sell him. It'd be one of the most retarded things that Chelsea have ever done.

He won't get rid of Mata. He'd be insane to do that and Mata is their best player. You just don't get rid of your best players.
