Mourinho: "Luke Shaw a long way behind" | Shaw: "I will fight to the last second"

Manager decides the players' diet, no?
They can't monitor or force players to comply 24/7. It's about players' own professionalism. SAF could develop Ronaldo who is one of the fittest & most professional player and still had Anderson in the team.

Those are either his own words, or his PR guy has been instructed to dumb it down a bit. Either way fair play for the response.

Better than tweeting threats disguised as comments ending in exclamation marks!
This ^. It's at least taking responsibility through credible outletsource than Twitter where you can back tracking then claim account hacked or your mate used your phone...

A combination of his performance yesterday and the quotes in question. Do you need any other obvious things explained to you in a condescending manner or have you had your fill for tonight?
 Savage.

Haven't really followed this developing story but if Luke realizes he's got to up his game and fight to stay in the team and give it all for Mourinho then obviously, more power to him and it will be beneficial. I hope he can gain some form because I think he's a talented footballer.

I'm still pleased Jose sounded him out. It's obvious the lad needs a kick up the arse. He, like Rooney, always looks like he is carrying a few extra kg, and to get called out by 4 recent managers regarding attitude or commitment well that just says everything.
I totally trust Jose with this one, and if LS leaves because he can't apply himself well enough to get back into the team, then good riddance. Fleeting glimpses of his quality whilst at United is no way enough for the levels of praise he gets on here.

I would rather see a performance on the pitch. Atleast it's reassuring to know that he's taken Jose's criticism on his chin and is ready to fight for his place here.

Jose has given it hard to Miki, Martial, the attackers, Shaw and the entire team this season. I don't fancy his method but frankly, they do deserve criticisms. Miki started poorly, Martial was too distracted, the attackers have missed countless sitters that have cost us important points and three other managers agree Shaw has been careless.

I guess the debate is about whether or not the criticisms should be public under any circumstances. Nevertheless, we clearly have a manager who says it as it is and our team needs a good kick up the back side.

Jose deserves his own criticisms for some poor decisions this season and the pundits are doing a good job of that. I suspect he's hearing them and pulling out hair.

It's up to the boys to decide what they want. Some will probably be too pissed off with Jose's antics and leave the club. Others will get motivated to up their games.

It's a risky one for Jose. If he loses the dressing room due to this method of his, then his United career will end before it has started. But if he has enough loyalists in the dressing room and he rallies the team, they will win silverware and winning silverware often galvanizes teams. It's worth observing that Jose has always been the type of manager who thrives by having warrior like players who can be loyal to death.

I am not sure how this will eventually play out but it's interesting to watch. Jose will either self destruct or establish his legend. He's gambling on his preferred man management method. It worked with his Porto team, his first Chelsea team and his Inter team. It failed at Madrid and during his second Chelsea spell. Let's see what happens at United.

Meanwhile, if Shaw meant those words, then he might just become one of Jose's untouchables because as I recall, other young lads he tried his method on, preferred to walk away. E.g Lukaku and De Bruyne.

It's easy to talk, but I really hope he can knuckle down and become the player we expect him to be.

Bit impressed with how he's taken it tbf. Must be a tough cookie, I was expecting him to throw a tantrum tbh. Let's hope he can show it on the pitch.

Come on Luke! You've got it all to become a quality LB for us.

Really hope he kicks on.

Good words by Shaw.

I do hate this intolerance of 'public' bashing though. First off I don't think Mourinho has bashed any of our players. Just some firm words.

Secondly, I doubt this has come out of the blue either, he's probably spoken to all of Shaw, Mkhi, Martial etc privately many a times about their issues before going public. Hes probably just tired of doing things low key and wants a reaction from his players.

I agree, both Jose and Shaw have had their say and it's all positive as far as I'm concerned. The trouble is we've had players (and managers) talking good games while we perform poorly on the pitch for too long. The words are good such as they are, but it's high time for action in training and on match day.

Looks like Mourinho may have played a blinder here. Praying the lad kicks on from this.

A decent 15 mins is enough to prove Mourinho's handling of him to be correct?

If his next 15mins is poor will you change your mind and decide it's poor man management?

My Liverpool supporting mates were already creaming at the thought of signing him. As if, we'd sell him to them.

It's all very well and good Shaw saying that, but let's see if in actuality he does. Clearly he hasn't been fighting thus far or Jose would have included him in the team a lot more. Bit of a piss take that a young player trying to make it at United needs his manager to give him criticism in public to motivate him to try harder.

He actually said in his interview on MOTD last night that he had told shaw this already so he felt ok relaying the comments to the interviewer. I don't think his words seemed as harsh as some are making out either.

He had to say that though, some PR firm prob put it together. He was hardly going to say José is wrong and he's not happy that some so called fans are calling him fat, unprofessional etc this week

You won't give up will you?

He could've said anything at this point. He isn't getting minutes and we are in April. It's the right time to push for a transfer and make public claims against the manager who will make the club sell.

Mourinho said the right things imo, and Shaw reacted in the right way.

Agree. You can have all the talent in the world, but without commitment and attitude you can't be successful at United.

I hope this isn't just PR nonsense from Shaw's agent, to smooth out any doubts future buyers might have. Hopefully he really means this and cracks on, I fully expect 70-90mins for him at Sunderland.

The way it's written it's from Shaw.

Would be easy to brief the press to smooth things out without releasing an actual statement like that.

Not at all, which is why I qualified the post you quoted with words like "may" and "praying" - it looks like Jose may have played a blinder given Shaw's decent cameo and positive press release. I'm praying the lad kicks on from this. Christ.

Jose has given it hard to Miki, Martial, the attackers, Shaw and the entire team this season.

In contrast, Rooney really got it easy so far as public admonishment but has been phased out of the squad. Depay as well was quoted as a good boy but then sold.

Jose's tough love is no secret. And if we're all honest, the club needs more than just professionals. We need battling, leave it all on the field warriors. I'm completely fine with his ways.

All the words seem to indicate it was a good move from Jose. Who'd a thunk it?! Not half of Redcafe. Respect to him for what he's said, as it's very easy act like the brats some are. Now it's on Shaw to prove his worth, and that's a good thing for us.

Mourinho always does this when he wants sacking for a big compensation package; it seems he's tired of commuting from London already.....

I think Shaw made a good account of himself when he came on against Everton and was directly involved in the goal that led to the equaliser. Jose's man management leaves a lot to be desired and has been a point of contention for me ever since his appointment.

He has my backing fully, but I just wish he would ease up on his scorched earth policies its divisive and toxic.
