When asked what Shaw had to do to return to the squad, Mourinho replied: "Who?

Luke Shaw?

"Luke Shaw? It’s difficult for him to be on the bench because I cannot compare him with Ashley Young, with Darmian, with Blind.

"I cannot compare the way he trains, the way he commits, the focus, the ambition. I cannot compare. He is a long way behind."

When a journalist enquired whether more should be expected from an England international, Mourinho added: " Joe Hart is an English international and is playing on loan in Italy."

Reading about a players attitude is the most irritating thing. He's lucky enough to play football to earn his living, he should give his all! Most of us have to slave away for most of our lives to get by.

He needs to sort himself out, at his age he should be full of enthusiasm, but I'm not going to be surprised if he is replaced in the summer.

Well then... I didn't realise he only had 1 year left on his contract either. We won't recoup much at all.

Really don't like how Jose talks to the press about stuff like this.

Sure, Samuel. Because his teammates would go behind his back and talk shit about him to you of all people.
To be fair he was first to report the Mata injury and has been getting snippets of team info this season.

Good riddance.

We don't have the time to waste on him if he's not putting in the work or effort.

Easily get £25M + off him from Everton.

Savage comments from Mourinho. Tough love is one thing but let's be honest did it work with Henrikh Mkhitaryan? I mean he had a few decent games but looks pretty terrible. What did he actually do with him. Not exactly tearing the Premier League or anything.

I see Shaw getting sold mostly likely to a rival team. Will be determined to show his quality like KDB, Lukaku and co all have.

hope he goes to Everton or team below

WOW they are savage comments, dont see any place in the team for him , fully expect him to be sold in the summer.

Wonder if any of the big clubs would be interested. Liverpool, City (not that he'd go to either) and Arsenal could do with a LB.

Maybe, but it's really difficult to come back after such a big injury. At least not to the world class levels or close to that. Not that many players with the ability to be great after severe injuries - can't think of that many.

Think I remember him saying similar things about Kevin De Bruyne...

Just seen the quotes. Good bye, Luke.

Really thought he'd have our LB position sorted for the next 10 years :(

Such a talented player, making team of the year during his time with Southampton, but the leg break obviously ruined things.

No chance. 1 year left on his contract and he's on over 100k per week.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has questioned Luke Shaw's commitment to the Old Trafford club.

The 21-year-old defender has only played 15 times for the Reds this season and has not figured since last month's 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.

And Mourinho claims he compares unfavourably to fellow defenders Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind.

"I cannot compare the way he trains and commits, the focus, the ambition. He is a long way behind," he said.

Mourinho was asked by reporters whether he expected more from an England international.

"Joe Hart is an English international and is playing on loan in Italy," he responded.

Shaw signed for the club in June 2014 for £27m but he broke his leg in two places during a Champions League game in September 2015 which kept him out of the game for almost a year.

In November, he was criticised by Mourinho for missing the Premier League win over Swansea after he said he was not able to play.

He was not part of the squad for Saturday's 0-0 draw against West Brom, despite United's lengthy injury list with Juan Mata (groin surgery) the latest addition joining defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones and midfielder Paul Pogba.

Mourinho, who was criticised by Match of the Day 2 pundit Chris Sutton for his side's lack of attacking threat, is unsure whether the Frenchman will return for Tuesday's Premier League visit of Everton.

"Pogba I cannot say he is ready for Tuesday because I don't know," he said. "I think Mata, Jones and Smalling for a long time, but I don't think Pogba is such a long-term injury as the others."

His commitment in training and attitude have nothing to do with the injury. If anything that sort of career threatening injury should act as a reality check. KDB and lukaku left Chelsea because they were alway going to play second fiddle to lampard and drogba. Shaw had the chance to make the left back position his but hasn't.

What does Mourinho mean by that? Is he suggesting Shaw needs to go out on loan?
I also didn't really understand what that meant
I think he's using it as an example to show how committed an England international can/should be - Hart is out on loan in Italy of all places to salvage his career. Shaw is [supposedly] half-heartedly training.

Jose was questioning Shaws commitment and application, and the journalist basically said...but he's an England International. As if to say, he's bound to have commitment etc.

What Jose meant was, just because you are an England International, doesn't mean you have made it or have a given right to play.

I was meaning that it's not certain that he can show his 'quality' even if he shows a lot of 'commitment' in training.

Yeah that makes sense.

I think it's time to sell Shaw. Its April now and Mourinho still isn't happy with his training levels. Doesn't look like Shaw will change any time soon

Jose told the journos that Shaw is a long way from playing and one of the journos piped up with "But he's an England international?!".

Thats when Jose said "Yeah? Joe Hart is on loan in Italy"

So he has managed to fall far behind Rojo, Darmian, Blind and Young? All very average players who aren't even natural left backs. Wow.

Must admit I believed Shaw would be our LB for at least a decade when he signed, but surely he is finished at the club. And van Gaal's transfer record is getting worse by the day.

A bit brutal from Jose here. Shaw is never gonna respond to this type of treatment. We will have to sell him for his own good. Lad needs to get on with his career cause it won't happen here.

Going forward, United should only buy the finished product for Jose. Otherwise we'll be wasting money. His methods do not work with the young ones.

It's funny about this attitude as I've heard from people who've met him that he's quite a nice decent chap. I really don't know what to think.

Hard to believe there's a way back for Shaw now

The club had already lined up this deal - LVG only approved it. Not sure he had any other choice. Let's not blame LVG for everything.

It doesn't bother me, to be honest. I had written Shaw off before Christmas.

A new left back will be bought.

Fair point, but I was just looking at the list of players he brought in. Not looking good at all.

What a fabulous way to treat a 21 year old kid coming off the back of a career-threatening injury. A complete and utter waste of a season.

MUFC owe Shaw nothing. We are not a charity.
If Shaw isn't good enough to play for us (or for Spurs), he needs to be shifted to lower level team.

Just like with TFM, it's annoying that he's not even getting game time for the U23s. I honestly don't see the logic in this if they're not going to get any game time at all for the 1st team?

Agreed.
These players should at least get some game time (either on loan or in our reserves).
Shaw has spent 3 important years of his career, basically doing nothing.

Or maybe Jose needs to work with the ones he has at the moment? Our team is better than Liverpool's for e.g. yet they're performing better than us. Not trying to complain about Jose but he does need to adjust his approach somewhat if we are to get anywhere with him in charge.

This is the thread about his performances, which has somehow been highjacked by the "will he stay or will he go?" discussion. That discussion, for me, is dead but regardless it's out of context with the thread.

So even the attempt at a joke was off.

So you don't want us to discuss Shaw, in a Shaw performance thread, while he is not playing any games?

It's pretty obvious, isn't it? The journalist tries to make a point about Shaw being good enough (including commitment etc.) because he is English international and Jose dismisses it as being English international doesn't mean much these days.

Interesting comments from him. It actually looks like he's giving him a last chance by exposing him to the press that way, instead of voicing the concerns privately (which he probably did already). Now the pressure is on Shaw, and there is a chance that he'll actually get motivation for it. Or he'll break, but Mourinho already wrote him off anyway

I'm guessing it's more work ethic and desire to improve, rather than being disruptive. Seems to be a desperate attempt from Mourinho to get him to change his ways or he'll be sold on the summer.

Maybe he is Jose. Get the feeling he doesn't rate his mentality at all, and sees him as weak/fragile.

This shit looks fine once you get a reaction. It's not working, is it? Seems a ferocious waste of a very promising asset. Find it hard to believe he's been so spectacularly useless at training. If he's genuinely not putting it in, words fail me.
