Alright mate. I'll just go chuck in my 20+ years of supporting Arsenal and go support Chelsea instead, because Buxton of the internet told me to after he couldn't take some valid criticisms of Edu.

Edu has been great, but that doesn't make him immune to criticism. If we falter during the second half of the season because of our midfield depth who will shoulder the blame?
Rebekah Vardy

It was clear we had to massively overpay to get this Caicedo something we generally do not do and are even more reluctant since the Pepe transfer. Jorginho is massively underwhelming but he is also not asked to start a whole lot of games. He certainly has experience to get us over the line, so let's see what he brings first. 12 mil is actually a lot here too, isn't it. Seems like a deal that could be wrapped up for 8.

15 million for Jorginho apparently - not bad for a bit of cover

For us, we were letting him leave in a free anyway so that kind of fee is great. Feel a bit miffed that he’s going to Arsenal to piggy bank his way to a title but oh well it is what it is. Had hoped he’d go back to Italy.

They were caught tapping up Mudryk and then clearly did the same with Caicedo. Good on you for refusing to budge.
This is how 99% of high profile transfers happens.

No, of course, but he's not meant to. In the build-up phase, however, in terms of controlling tempo and slotting neat balls into channels and half-spaces, Jorginho is probably better than Partey and Xhaka. It is a skillset that isn't there at present, to that level.

For what it's worth, you should focus less on how you look to Chelsea fans (retirement FC) and more on how Arteta would utilise someone like him. Previous Chelsea disappointments don't represent this one. Every player is, ultimately, individual.

Jorginho is certainly walking into a much better and much more cohesive Arsenal team than previous ex Chelsea players have so he’ll likely to be a much better player for them than Willian and Cech. That said, David Luiz was alright for them for a while until it went pear shaped.

cant' see arsenal buying jorginho for 12m and putting down another 70m to sign Caicedo

I cannot see Brighton being able to sign a like for like replacement of the same quality.
They are pretty darn good at recruitment to be fair to them. But at least now they'll have months and months to sort it as opposed to a few days.

Surely United will be in for him in the summer with Enzo gone to Chelsea and FDJ likely unattainable.

Not the ideal profile now we have Casemiro, but I think priority was always to go all out for a CF, and if we have enough could sign Caicedo and potentially take a punt on a younger player for a smaller fee.

Other than De Jong who else could offer us that ball progressor so badly missing in midfield

Would have wanted Caceido but not meant to be. I'm happy with our recruits and our squad is stronger now than before the window. It's usually hard to find good options/value in Jan so I think we've done well. Added 2 players proven at this level, one of which is a CL and Euros winner (and Arteta has admired for a while).

Caicedo has made himself look a right prat. Brighton should make an example out of him and stick him on the bench.

I like the player but for 70m I think there will be better options for both us and Arsenal in the summer.

Ultimately I think this is why we walked away, and we apparently didn't want to burn our bridges with Brighton.

We only went hard on Caceido (and Mudryk) because of our league position. If we were slugging it out for top 4 as usual I'm not sure we'd have been ready to spend like this.

I think Jorginho is a decent enough signing given you were running out of options. Not quite the profile you needed to fill in for Party (you can see why Caecido was preferred) but gives you options in the middle. Still think you’ll need Partey though as Xhaka and Jorginho wouldn’t be the most mobile or dynamic pairing.

I agree, Xhaka-Jorghino looks a bit too lightweight but I think we're defensively much better as a unit so if we do have to play that, we won't get exposed too much against most teams. Saliba and Gabriel (both quick and athletic) pushing up behind also helps plug those holes.
I'm satisfied with the fee and contract for a proven winner approaching his twilight years. It's a short term contract, we're not saddling ourselves to him like we did in the past for Chelsea's pensioners. No denying he wasn't our first choice but Arteta has admired him for some time. At the end of the day, he's an upgrade on Elneny (who's now injured long-term) and Sambi (who's being loaned to Palace for rest of season).

I think you’ve done well in actuality getting two good players in (Trossard and Jorginho).

I can see a few fans are disappointed and frustrated with Edu which I do understand as you clearly wanted Mudryk and Caceido and ended up not getting either of your first choice signings. The money was available but deals couldn’t be done. I guess that’s becoming a bit of a theme and in terms of Caecido he will likely have others in for him come summer.

That said though you’ve actually had back up plans and made them happen which is super important.

I think Jorginho is a bit of a last minute panic that was easy to get done given his contract situation and the fact the player is already in London but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad signing.

So he is the better player out of those two?

I think he’d be a top signing, perhaps even better than De Jong.

He can do pretty much everything in the middle. Play defensive 6 role, box to box or as an attacking midfielder. Great engine and superb technical ability.

Can Barella or Bennacer offer us that midfield ball progression we would get with De Jong
Barella yes definitely the equal of FDJ in that regard. Bennacer is more of a destroyer like Caicedo but slightly better on the ball.

@croadyman look in to Barella and you’ll love him. He’d be ideal for us.

Never usually do that until we are looking close to signing the player. Otherwise I will end up jinxing things, noticed he was backup option for Chelsea to Fernandez and think scousers like him too.

it’s not valid . It’s full of ifs buts what’s and hindsight’s. Sometimes we have to live in the real world. Going toe to toe with Chelsea for transfers doesn’t work for us, they’re buying players who wouldn’t get in our team and giving them twice what we pay Odegaard. There’s more to transfers than “pay the extra 10m edu”. It’s hard work sometimes, when people don’t see the full picture.

I don't quite get the hype yet with Caicedo.

Sure he seems a good ball winner already, but not especially creative or with a wide passing range - surely Utd should be after a player who offers a bit more as a CM?

Casemiro already does most of the deep-lying defensive work anyway, so I think an ideal pairing for him would be someone a bit more dynamic and box-to-box. Someone a bit more rounded in their skills profile.
