Mo Salah

Prohibitive, i don't think so, but on the other hand i'm not sure it would be worth it. He'd cost neymar money most likely

My cousin's a Liverpool fan and he reckons Perez will only buy players who are handsome/glamorous/marketable, and he says he is thus relaxed about Salah, who doesn't exactly come across as the most glamorous footballer. What do you think about this? Personally I think it isn't that sound since Salah has the whole of Egypt behind him which is a huge marketing leverage.

You should tell him to look at the number of middle eastern fans Madrid has.

They even changed their logo in that part of the world:

That he'd be better in the PL on a team that suited him even better than Roma? Sure. That he'd tear the PL to shreds? Nooooope

Though tbf to him, Roma fans spent two years telling anyone who'd listen that he'd be Messi if he could finish. As only romans can do they gave him one of the all time great nicknames, "Sciupone l'Africano"

As I already said to Varun, I didn't expect him to tear the PL to shreds. However I did expect him to build on his already impressive record. Salah is young, he's more suited for the EPL then for the Serie A and he was moving to a better side, one who weren't playing with 10 men just to accommodate the big slow elephant (or dinosaur?) in the room

Roma were a very vertical and fast team. Not all that different from Liverpool. It's just that
1) the team, including Salah, was structured to play for Dzeko. So Salah wasn't their main goalscorer and played more of a support role instead of the main role he plays at liverpool
2) Salah was a dire finisher who needed 5 chances to score a goal
3) Serie A is slower, more tactical with a bigger focus on defensive organization and managers who's tactics are always based on the opposition, meaning Salah didn't have as many opportunities to showcase his abilities and defenders knew him better and had a better handle on him

Like Mane last season, I must be one of the few that doesn't buy into the hype at all with this guy. Sure he's good and I think the system Klopp plays suits him to a tee, but I can't help but laugh at some of the things being said about him. Comparisons with Messi, putting him amongst the world's finest etc.

I'm not basing this on our recent game against Liverpool, but I remember before that game everybody was predicting he'd destroy us. He was average. People said Young was great that game but I left thinking he too was very average that day, especially on the ball. Defensively he defended Salah relatively easily at times though, through just being compact and channelling Salah to the inside into the awaiting CBs. Nothing ground breaking and no amazing performance from Young.
Yeah, he's rubbish, and so is Mane. Watching from your bedroom, you're a football genius.
Did you see Salah's goal for Egypt? He's now on 38 goals in one season and you think he's 'avarage'. Some people should just give up watching football (naming no names of course)

Ps- best way to defend against him......is the United way, with 2 players on him the whole time, and another in front of him by 2 feet. Well done.

Cmon, Young is good but you're overhyping him now saying he's like having 3 players.

Why would that even matter to people? If I was signing to one of the biggest clubs in the world and their crest was Mohammad and Allah playing handball up against a wall I wouldn't give two fecks.

Maybe you are not as religious as other people then.

It's not religious, its political (power grabbing). All major religions when followed correctly allow and encourage other major religions to be openly practiced. To think otherwise means the hypocritical fundamentalists seeking power and relevance have won.

Anyway, derailing aside, does anyone think his value will drop significantly next season if he 'only' scores 20-23 PL goals?

How the feck was Bale any of those things?

I dont see what this has to do with the fact that Muslims might not want to wear something with a cross on it? Removing it doesn’t mean Christians cannot wear the jersey.

:lol::lol: he still was/is marketable I think

Exactly. Religion is about what is truly in your heart, you don't need to public display for or against any symbols to be who you are.

His agent has rubbished rumours he's set to stay.
Don't think he'll leave mind, but I wouldnt be surprised if they do have a set career plan which involves Madrid.

Main thing I've learned here is that his agent seems like a complete tool.

Also, I've seen a few people now mention that Real wouldn't want to sign him as he's ugly or not marketable.

Firstly, how is he ugly? He's not Ronaldo or Beckham by any means but he's certainly not ugly.

And secondly, there are lots of thing which make you marketable. Bale made himself incredibly marketable even while he was at Tottenham and has gone to greater heights at Real. He is hardly an adonis.

He has certainly surprised me with his performance this year. Just pure quality+effort week in week out. If he continues on this high level of football and keeps improving I would definitively put him in the best player of the world list. That is if and only if Liverpool win the League and reach the final of Champions league.

Not a chance he'll leave after only one year, but perhaps he'll be fluttering his eyelashes at a few clubs this summer so he can act like he's doing Liverpool a favour by agreeing to stay for one more season. He doesn't seem the type, but it's hard to tell, and agents are good at stirring trouble even if their client isn't.

Is it widely accepted that he's world class now? I was on the fence about him, but i'm starting to believe. It simply can't just be a purple patch, the guy has gone up a level. If you check the positions his goals have come from you can see he's becoming a more complete player, he can score from just about anywhere. I think his goal against Portugal is one of his best this season. The kind of thing you expect from Messi.

I actually think City would stand to benefit the most from signing Salah (commercially). He's the first top quality Arab footballer and we all know where their owners are from. Hand in hand they could basically ensure absolute domination of the market in the Middle East by placing him as their flagship superstar.

Very envious of Liverpool's recent attacking signings like Mane, Salah and Firmino. They've done a great job at identifying players for their system and then training them to produce their utmost.

Salah is great. His buildup contribution is alright but given time and space in the final third (which is Klopps hallmark) he is devastating. Incredible goal threat. Liverpool have a proper talisman on their hands.

Arab? He's Egyptian.

Arab? He's Egyptian.
That's correct.... but many Egyptians view themselves as Arabs. It also applies for other African countries like Lybia.

If anything, I think that would cement/increase his value as it'd show he could be relied upon to be a consistent goal scorer. Like Ronaldo in 08/09 - he didn't score as many as the 07/08 but he showed he wasn't a flash in the pan.

I feel a good few of his goals that sneak in could be saved. I can't see him getting similar stats next season, although only time will tell.

Exciting player to watch, bastard of a club.

That's a big if. Unless if Brendan Rodgers returns and molds him into a proper world star by teaching him and the club the philosophy of Brendan football.

I think he'll stay for one more year, but if I was him I'd probably look to go this year, and it's probably the time Liverpool would make the most cash from him, as I just don't see it as realistic that he comes anywhere close to the matching his numbers next season.

My understanding of City and PSG ownerships is that they're using football to establish a business foothold in the western and chinese markets. The arab market is probably the least important in their eyes

Indeed, but I'm sure they'd find the opportunity to have an Arab player as their superstar to be quite enticing. Not that we'd ever sell him to them.

City fans, if/when Salah becomes the best ever goalscorer in a single PL season, would you be happy if Pep decided to buy him this summer? If so, do you reckon Liverpool would immediately ask for £200m minimum under protest? And most importantly for @Arbitrium 's benefit would the club pay it and would you be happy for them to pay it?

Because Messi is such a good looking guy?

Messi is the best player in history, Salah is not on the same planet. Messi has played for the most coveted team the last decade, Salah plays for a team that hasn’t won the league since the 80’s - and which is out of all competitions they could win before Christmas.

They have Sterling and Sane, they don’t even remotely need him.
