Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

Burkart, Greenwood and Baars are all playing quite well.

Really like the look of our left-back. Always on the move forward and quite good on the ball as well.

BUTT: HOW UNITED ARE DEVELOPING WINNERS
Nicky Butt has explained how Manchester United are working to breed a winning mentality and has challenged four first-team stars to ensure that it continues.

United's Head of Academy, who was part of the club's famous Class of '92, knows what it takes to come up through the ranks and turn talent into trophies.

In a fascinating interview with ManUtd.com, Butt gave an insight into the beliefs that he and his coaching staff are trying to instill, and says you have to be a winner to succeed at Old Trafford.

“I think it’s massive to develop mentally," he said. "Wherever it is, you’ve got to have the right mental attitude towards work and towards other people. You’ve got to be a good person, and I believe that, even though a few inevitably slip through the net as in any other walk of life, we produce good people here. Hopefully they work in football but, if not, they go on to do other things successfully.

“It’s drilled into you from an early age. It’s all well and good being a United player, but you need to be a winner. Ultimately, if you’re not winning things here, you won’t last long, and that’s a fact. The manager will look to someone else who can win.

"This club has built its foundations on winning, we’ve always won things and been successful. We’ve had dry spells, like any club, but we always get back to winning. If you’re not a winner, if you’re not brought up with that winning mentality, you’re going to struggle in the first team."

Asked about the club's wider ethos, Butt said it's up to Academy graduates Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba, as well as new club captain Michael Carrick, to carry on those traditions, particularly when it comes to new signings.

“People like Marcus, Jesse and Paul, people who know the system, they have to carry the club now. As well as Michael Carrick, who knows the place inside out. These young players who come in for a lot of money might not know the club or the environment or the area, so it’s up to those guys to incorporate them into United and instill those beliefs.

"They need to be introducing them to Kath on reception [at the Aon Training Complex], letting them know how long she’s been here at the club. They have to know about how many players she’s seen come through those doors down the years and decades. They need to recognise the laundry people, the canteen ladies, the chefs, the groundstaff and security lads – they’re part of our family and you need to say 'good morning' to them every single day.

"When you come to United, the players are the superstars and the ones everyone wants an autograph from but, when you come into this building, we’re all equal. We all have a role and, without one, we don’t have a team. Without the kit guys or the bus drivers, without the security guards and canteen staff, there wouldn’t be a football club. It’s important for the players to let the new lads know what Manchester United is all about."
Standards.

Reynolds has looked good for NI, they have a few good players in that time.

Barely held on, but won it. Williams, Garner really good. Greenwood in flashes as well, solid from O'Connor, Whelan & Richardson as well. Nice cameo from Laird, too.

Any word on the best talents?

What do you know about the current England U16s? There results don't seem to be too great recently. Is Mason Greenwood involved with England much as well?

I like the looks of number 3,4,6,7,8,9,10,11 from the little I've seen of them. 8,11,13,16,17 are 2003 born so playing 1 year up and 10 playing 2 year up. 18 was on England U15s trial before too.

England U16s group (2001) are between two great groups (2000 and 2002) but they have some very good talents though it seems they could never been played together for some reasons. Arsenal and Liverpool have the strongest groups of players at that age group though, which is unusual.

Greenwood has been involved only sporadically due to various seasons, while Garner and Laird has never been called up.

This the chap who left City to come to us who scored about a billion goals for their youth team? If i remember correctly he was meant to be really highly rated.

Seems like he is always injured :(
A year or two ago his and Greenwoods team played some 5aside tourno, both of them looked different class.

I am hoping we don't release him like we did with Lewis Thompson who was the lovechild of the Gomes age group just few seasons ago.

Not sure about City youth team but he did score a lot of goals for ours. Only play for City for one year after they moved his family from Ireland.

Do you know the clubs position/policy on re-signing 1st year scholars that have previously left the club? I'm thinking of the likes of McAtee, Ohio etc.
With the new structure we're putting in place and first team opportunities we give they might wish they stayed.

First year scholars? 16yo...I don't remember the names you have listed...what years were they?

I think he meant resigning them as 1st year scholars, not sure though!
Yeah I meant kids that left in the younger age groups that we might decide to resign when they are 16, as first year scholars. I wondered if that's possible or if we have a policy of something like "once you've left, there's no coming back"?

I think it'll be individual basis. Most of the players who have left haven't been poached by anyone bigger or better, though. So there's not too many we'd be arsed about getting back.

Basically, when you join at 7/8 (or whenever under the age of 15), you sign a one-year 'contract' to train and be coached at United. If the club likes you, and you are developing then the club offers you another one-year 'contract. It then becomes a rolling process until a kid turns 15/16 an is offered a 'scholarship'.

Any kid can leave at any point and obviously kids are coming and going at all different age groups for all different reasons. I know of one kid whose father got a job in London and the family moved down there. United released him from the yearly contact and he signed for a London club. In effect, the contract is not legally binding but the FA have introduced to stop poaching. In reality most clubs come to some arrangement and that works for everyone. But the club retain each kid for one year until they are offered a proper scholarship which is binding.

Depending on the kid, United offer different types of scholarships.

1+0 = a first year scholarship
1+1 = a first year scholarship with a guarantee of a one year professional deal
1+2 = a first year scholarship with a guarantee of a two year professional deal
2+2 = etc
0+2 = etc

It depends on the kid, how old he is, how bad United want him, how many other clubs are interested and so on.

Once a kid decides to leave at first scholarship level (rather than the club releasing him)...United theoretically could resign him if they wanted to but I have never seen this happening. In fact, I don't know of hardly any player who has left at 16 and gone to become a proven first team premiership player.

Some do it at 18/19 after they go through the youth system and decide to move on but at younger ages it is incredibly rare.

The coaching staff really don't make that many mistakes at that level regardless of what many people might think.

If you make it all the way through to U/15's and do not get offered a scholarship then basically the kid is probably technically proficient but lacks something else that will make them a professional footballer. Could be pace, physique, attitude, confidence, determination or focus on schooling etc etc.

In my opinion a lot of kids just reach their level...has been happening since the 1930's.

But would there ever be a situation where we had a kid in the younger age groups, was essentially poached by, say City, and then became disgruntled at lack of first team opportunities. Would we ever look to take that kid back on if the possibility arose?

Actually I heard we do have that policy. Nobody was poached directly last season though so looks like the thing has stopped for a while.
