Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

Are there any other standout talents you know of in our younger age groups like Greenwood/Gomes if you don't mind me asking?

There's a 13 yo called Shola who's very highly rated. Not at the age that we should talk more about him though.

Nicky Butt will manage our U19's team.

Greenwood is absolutely top drawer, was talking about him last night with a couple of old-timers at the 23s game. James Wilson, too actually.
One of the fellas - been watching the youth since the Babes - said he thought Wilson had more potential at 14 than Giggs did, still thinks he can do something if he gets ahead of these injuries. Thinks Greenwood is better right now than Gomes was at this stage. I'm not as sure - I'd say it's extremely close - I think he's more likely to break in early due to his size. But, interesting season ahead, if he's involved a lot early on, we might be seeing another teenage debut in a couple of years.
Can't say I've watched a huge amount of Greenwood but would definitely disagree here. Physically Greenwood is ahead of Angel at that age giving him an extra yard than Angel had. But that doesn't make him the better player imo.
Wilson relied too much on his speed and although he was a good dribbler giggs was better with his feet. That's something that you get found out for at the top level.

I saw both extensively from 14/15 to when they reached first team...Giggs' potential was akin to George Best (and history has proved he was the closest)...Wilson, although a very good player was nowhere near that.

I didn't see Giggs before his first team debut so I can't say. Only saying what others had said.

Shocking defending for both of their goals.

Our equaliser looked offside?

You can't be offside if it's before the halfway line, technically the assist is offside, but I'm half remembering some exemption if that player has passed from a position beyond the defender or something.

I'm pretty sure you have to square the ball, not play it forwards?

Definitely wouldn't mind getting him but City would ask way too much money though I don't think he would mind playing with Angel.

Heard all good things about him should definitely be in for him if theres any chance. He cant have any complaints about first team action also.

That's the hard thing with youth players...you rely on memory and also everyone has a different opinion which is fine of course.

Best I have seen at that age are Giggs and Morrison...second tier would be Butt, Rossi, Scholes, Fletcher, Welbeck, Doherty.

Don't think Sancho is contracted there, so it would be compensation only for city if he leaves.

Yeah found it;

You can't be offside if you are level with or behind the ball.

If someone plays the ball forward as long as you are never receiving it from behind it's not offside. From the angle of the camera, he looks to be ahead of the ball before it's passed into his run, but given where he eventually hits it from, I don't think he ever was.

It's hard to tell for definite from that angle, but it looks like he is ahead of the assister when the ball is initially played across the goal.

Do you know the clubs position/policy on re-signing 1st year scholars that have previously left the club? I'm thinking of the likes of McAtee, Ohio etc.
With the new structure we're putting in place and first team opportunities we give they might wish they stayed.

Any chance we might go in for sancho? @khoazany @Mr. MUJAC . @jb8521
From what I've heard he doesn't particularly like Manchester so wants first team wages/first team football or a move. Can't see him joining us anyway because as far as I know he actually does have a pro contract but it's only a short one and City are trying to get to sign a long term deal

Personally I would include Gillespie in that group. He was at least at the same level as Scholes and Butt at Youth level

BUTT: HOW UNITED ARE DEVELOPING WINNERS
Nicky Butt has explained how Manchester United are working to breed a winning mentality and has challenged four first-team stars to ensure that it continues.

United's Head of Academy, who was part of the club's famous Class of '92, knows what it takes to come up through the ranks and turn talent into trophies.

In a fascinating interview with ManUtd.com, Butt gave an insight into the beliefs that he and his coaching staff are trying to instill, and says you have to be a winner to succeed at Old Trafford.

“I think it’s massive to develop mentally," he said. "Wherever it is, you’ve got to have the right mental attitude towards work and towards other people. You’ve got to be a good person, and I believe that, even though a few inevitably slip through the net as in any other walk of life, we produce good people here. Hopefully they work in football but, if not, they go on to do other things successfully.

“It’s drilled into you from an early age. It’s all well and good being a United player, but you need to be a winner. Ultimately, if you’re not winning things here, you won’t last long, and that’s a fact. The manager will look to someone else who can win.

"This club has built its foundations on winning, we’ve always won things and been successful. We’ve had dry spells, like any club, but we always get back to winning. If you’re not a winner, if you’re not brought up with that winning mentality, you’re going to struggle in the first team."

Asked about the club's wider ethos, Butt said it's up to Academy graduates Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba, as well as new club captain Michael Carrick, to carry on those traditions, particularly when it comes to new signings.

“People like Marcus, Jesse and Paul, people who know the system, they have to carry the club now. As well as Michael Carrick, who knows the place inside out. These young players who come in for a lot of money might not know the club or the environment or the area, so it’s up to those guys to incorporate them into United and instill those beliefs.

"They need to be introducing them to Kath on reception [at the Aon Training Complex], letting them know how long she’s been here at the club. They have to know about how many players she’s seen come through those doors down the years and decades. They need to recognise the laundry people, the canteen ladies, the chefs, the groundstaff and security lads – they’re part of our family and you need to say 'good morning' to them every single day.

"When you come to United, the players are the superstars and the ones everyone wants an autograph from but, when you come into this building, we’re all equal. We all have a role and, without one, we don’t have a team. Without the kit guys or the bus drivers, without the security guards and canteen staff, there wouldn’t be a football club. It’s important for the players to let the new lads know what Manchester United is all about."

Talk about poor attitude.... I get the impression he works hard at his game but he needs to sort his priorities out if he wants to push on long term.
