Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

United start their 2016-2017 FA Youth Cup journey home against So’ton, Dec 17th. Don't know much about their U18 apart from them sitting 8th in Premier League South, 13 points from 11 matches. Traditionally a premium academy though.

I get the feeling that Sean Gods will go the Tom Thorpe route, be rated by pretty much every fan but be sold into his early twenties having had no real chance and end up being a sub par championship player.

Hope he doesn't 'cos I'd love to have a young Carrick type midfielder in our first team again! I remember Carrick looking so good a few years back.

Can the posters more clued up tell me of I'm way off the mark on my assessment of his situation?

It's ok that you like the guy - but calling him Gods ? :) I don't rate him that highly...or rather, I think he is a very good footballer I just think he lacks that bit of pace necessary at this level. And at 21 he looks pretty far away from our first-team so I assume he will leave us in the summer.

 I hate auto correct!

So he's another Matty James rather than a Carrick? Shame, to be fair last time I had mutv Sean GOSS he was looking real good in the academy, guess long injury problems stunted his progress like Petrucci.

Thanks for the update though.

Don't know what happened with them, apparently a very good crop last I heard.

Think the list of which U16s getting scholarships for next season U18s already out. GK James Thompson got one, don't know yet who else.

Any goals and assist stats for the U18 team this year?

Here's what I've got, still missing yesterday's assists for Gomes & Boonen goals.

Angel Gomes:

Utd: 11 appearances (10 starts + 1) sub, 7 goals + 6 assists
Eng U17: 6, 4+6

Burkart:

Utd: 10 (7+3), 3+2
Swi U17: 3(2+1), 3+0

Chong:

9, 2+6

Boonen:

11 (8+3), 6+3

Buffonge:

10 (8+2), 4+4

Gribbin:

2 (1+1), 1+1

Thompson,Carney,Laird,Levitt,Garner,McGhee,Bughail-Mellor,Williams,Amankwah all got deals. 2 others are on hold. With Dolan not getting it we're back with the striker issue again.

Looks like we're getting another striker from abroad again.....

So we're becoming like Portugal then.

I wouldn't be against promoting Greenwood to play striker but I think we need to see how he does at that role for the U16s first (not sure if Dolan left now after he wasn't offered a scholarship, a few in the same case stayed for the whole season. Among the rest of the options Greenwood is the most natural for that role). Though we still should sign another striker. I guess we'll sign 3 new players for that age group, a striker, a midfielder and a defender and promote Gomes, Chong and O'Connor to the U23s next season, Burkart/Tanner might get games as well. A big intake regardless, especially if they give deals to Allardyce and Belehouan (still in consideration).

At this point this is how the U18s next season looks like without Gomes, Chong and O'Connor

GKs: Fojicek, Thompson, Carney
Defenders: Barrett, Ercolani, Dunne, Spratt, Laird, Williams, Amankwah, (Belehouan?)
Midfielders: Barlow, Tanner, Levitt, Garner, McGhee, Mellor, (Galbraith?), (Allardyce?)
Forwards: Burkart, (Greenwood?)

Any chance that Burkart is also promoted to U23 next season or do you think it's better for his devlopment to do one more season with the U18?

Think that depends on the look of the u23s squad and who their next permanent manager is. But I would assume that he's more involved with the u23s, with him filling in at u18s when or if he isn't being used by the u23s. Will definitely play youth cup games also. I think if he was to stay in the u18s, he will do very well next season, as he would've adapted fully by then.

From that, Belehouan is arguably more valuable in terms of his position, than Allardyce. He can be left back cover for Spratt, which isn't easy to find. Laird can also possibly play there, but I think he'll be needed on the right, once Tanner moves up the pitch, to the wing. But like you said, there's still a case of who we bring in, that could change everything.

Williams can play on the right if Laird is needed on the left.Or Mellor playing fullback like loads of time last season.

I can imagine Williams playing rb with Laird going to the left being one of the solutions, especially seeing as Spratt has so far been unconvincing and doesn't look the best option on the left.

Old Trafford chiefs eye important signing: Man United move could be on the cards

ENGLAND under-20s coach Paul Williams is reportedly being eyed by Manchester United bigwigs.

The Sun claim the Red Devils have put Williams on their shortlist to take charge of the reserve side. Former reserve team coach Warren Joyce left the club last week. The 51-year-old penned a three-and-a-half year contract at Wigan.

The Latics are 22nd in the Championship after gaining promotion last term and Joyce has replaced Gary Caldwell who was axed last month. It's suggested Williams' youth-team contacts could help him seal a move to Old Trafford. Williams worked with Aidy Boothroyd before his switch to take the charge of Three Lions' under-21s.

Speaking in October, Williams explained his pride at leading England's young stars. "It’s been great working with Aidy and the U20s this season, so to take on the team for these games over the next few months is a big honour and privilege for me," he told the FA's official website. Williams has had stints coaching at Southampton, Brentford and Nottingham Forest.

The former defender also spent eight season playing in the Premier League for Coventry and Southampton.

Nicky Butt is in interim charge of the Manchester United reserve team.

I know it’s the Daily Mail article with a reference to a Sun article, but thought I’d still share it.

Williams appointed Swansea's assistant manager, so he's out, if he ever really was in the race in the first place.

Apparently our U13s lost to Man City 5-0. The U14s lost to Man City 6-0. And our U15s lost to Man City 9-0.

Not sure about the 13s and 14s but there are some factors which make me care even less about results like the U15s
- U14 goalkeeper
- No natural CB
- Striker with Ireland
- Greenwood got injured
- Difference in philosophy

The result is not great but I'm willing to bet that more players from our U15s will make the first team than players from that City team.

Reassuring to hear, I never get caught up in results below the Under 18s but I was surprised to hear about that result as I know the Under-15s are a highly rated group but when those factors are considered then it makes sense, especially not having a natural centre back.

I think the press don't have much footing to go after the academy right now.. Lot of investment in the academy that is public, plus bigger fish to fry for the press in Mou and 1st team results

Tommy Doyle from that Man City U15s team is an absolute baller in midfield. Grandson of a City legend as well. I heard we could barely get out of our own half so the scoreline although big wasn't that unimaginable (anyone who watch the U18s game vs. City last season can understand the feeling). Defence seems to be a weakness of that age group (also conceded 5 vs. Liverpool not long ago) but again our philosophy tends to make it harder for them.

5 assists in the 9-0 win according to himself on Twitter.

With a name like Doyle, there has to be some Irish roots in the family. His grandad was an England international. Michael Doyle is such an Irish name.

Going way OT here but the City team of late 60's/early 70's had quite a few who'd walk into the England squad these days.
Excellent players like Doyle, Young, Booth, Oakes and Pardoe totalled about a handful of caps between them and when we see guys who are not fit to lace their boots racking up the appearances it must piss them (or their ghosts) right off.
I'm sure United had similar players who were passed over too.
