Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

Surprise about this.Digby is of the same age but doesn't look better than any of Pearson,Rothwell and Harrop (and Goss for that matter).Holgate looks promising from the little I've seen of him (some PL clubs were interested including Arsenal) and seems to have the same development curve as John Stones.

There was a lot of excitement around Digby prior to his last growth spurt, shot up to 6'4 from 5'11 at 17 and 18. Subsequently he has been out injured a bit but seems to be back on track.

Yeah but he wasn't a regular last season for them (at least for the part that I followed them because of Pearson) and even their fans hope that he will move on.Unless we want to loan/sign to make up numbers for the U21s I can't see what's the point of him.

Yeah he's also come up as a right back but many seem to think he'll also make the permanent move to CB too. Fortunately for Stones he was at Barnsley when they were in the Championship so got some better experience.

Great news! Seems like a great place for them to play and develop.

Rothwell especially needs a good loan spell, his last one at Blackpool was a disaster, dunno why we even bothered sending him there, that club was a mess before last season even started

Btw, interesting spate of movement between the 2 clubs.

Maurice Watkins our long time ex solicitor and ex director is their chairman.

Barnsley is probably becoming our feeder club.Let's send Harrop there as well when we're at it.

We've sent quite a lot of youngsters to Barnsley over the years. They've got fantastic facilities for their size so I wonder if that's a factor.

6 month loan, if they do well then I'm sure a loan move to a championship club for the remainder of the season is very likely to happen

I thought Pearson was meant to have performed reasonably well there last season; evidently it didn't lead to a step up to a championship club.

He did really well, will do him no harm to go back there and push on. If he can play like he did last season, will be more than ready for a step up in January

My point was that he is relying on an opportunity arising somewhere, an injury or two at a Championship club that rates him highly enough to give him a chance. As one of the more impressive United U21 players, given our track-record of producing Championship level players, I would have thought he would be ready now. Indeed I would have expected his loan last season to be at a Championship team but I guess there wasn't much interest.

Anyway, it is better than playing another year of U21s.

He already had some Championship clubs interested in him last year but decided to stay at Barnsley.I guess it's due to Barsnley being considered a "good" club for them to develop.

I hope more will follow them.I don't see how another year in the U21s will benefit Love,Grimshaw,etc...

U18s tournament at Carrington tomorrow. Some U16s including Venancio Monteiro are in the squad.

Looks like we're looking to bolster the numbers in our reserves! Though GK is not really a position we have a shortage of options.. Too many to be honest!

We only have 1 GK at U18s level (Byrne).Sebtaoui not signed yet.

Just caught the Salford highlights, can't say anyone caught the eye too much. Fletch looked alright, Harrop's goal was nice. Good to see BJ playing centrally.

MU Premier Cup starts today.Group stage schedule:

United team: Campbell (GK),J.Thompson (GK),Laird,Garner,B.Williams,M.Dunne,Spratt,Belehouan,Barlow,Ceesay,Broadbent,McGhee,Levitt,Bughail-Mellor,Gomes (C),Greenwood

Yeah can't recall we ever qualified for the further rounds.

Drew Chivas 0-0 earlier so we will top the group if we win the last match.
We did have 6 points after 3 games in 2007, we won the fourth. Lost in all the further rounds. Once we were in the final, I think against City.

If Chivas and Real Madrid win their remaining games (Chivas 1 and Madrid 2) against Mamelodi Sundowns and FNSW Institute then United need to win as well and the goal difference will be decisive.
United have one goal more scored then Chivas, two more then Madrid. United have 1+ goal as Chivas, but Madrid 0. Madrid have 2 to play, United and Chivas only one. Two teams from each group will go to the quarter final.

Madrid won 2-0.

Real Madrid CF 3 1 0 2 2 2 5
Manchester United 3 1 0 2 2 1 5
Chivas 3 1 0 2 1 1 5
FNSW Institute 2 0 1 1 0 -1 1
Mamelodi Sundowns 3 0 2 1 1 -3 1
So Madrid has best goal difference +2, the other +1. United and Madrid have scored 2, Chivas 1.
All to be decided in the last round. Chivas play Mamelodi Sundown, Madrid and United play FNSW Institute
