Took his goal well, but the times I've watched him this season I'm not overly impressed. Still very young though, so he's got time on his hands. Needs to bulk up some. He looks very lightweight to me.

I'm impressed, he is calm, with great vision and technique

Against Madrid played well with a superb and decisive goal

I was impressed with Pjanic in the few games I saw of him last season and was wondering how those that follow Ligue 1 feel he is doing this season? I was curious when Lyon bought Gourcuff; how the two would fit in the same midfield.

Lyon Expect Chelsea Transfer Bid For International Midfielder | CaughtOffside

Miralem Pjanic is believed to have caught the eye of Chelsea and Inter after impressing for Lyon over the last couple of seasons.

The Bosnia & Herzegovina international is regarded as one of the best young prospects in Europe and he has established himself as a key player for Lyon since his arrival from Metz in 2008.

Lyon general manager Bernard Lacombe insists there have been no offers for Pjanic, but has hinted they could consider an attractive proposition for the 20-year-old.

“Inter Milan and Chelsea after him? At the moment there is absolutely nothing,” Lacombe told tuttomercatoweb.

“If some club arrives with an attractive offer we can sit around a table and talk about it, but, I repeat, this is not the case.” (Sky Sports)

Miralem Pjanic is one of the finest young talents in football.

Few players can boast the feat of scoring the goal that knocks Real Madrid out of the UEFA Champions League at the Santiago Bernabeu, and Pjanic did it while still a teenager too.

There is certainly room for another creative midfielder at Chelsea.

Yossi Benayoun was the single replacement of Joe Cole and Deco, who both departed in the summer, and he is yet another player at Stamford Bridge the wrong side of 30.

At 20, Pjanic could serve Chelsea for the next decade, but with Inter Milan’s interest growing by the day, they will have to move quickly to secure his signature.

Certainly a talent but seems he's been pushed out of the team with the arrival of Gourcuff.

True and it's unfair because Gourcuff has showed nothing in terms of being better than Pjanic. He's just a media icon, I don't even remember his last decent match for Lyon.
Pjanic should definitely leave

It will be interesting to see if he gets a game against Real next week, during Lyon's CL campaign there was a lot of buzz around him but since they bought Gourcuff he seems to have been sidelined.

Very unfairly.Gourcuff has been so average that Pjanic should have been given more chances but Aulas will never allow it, that would be admitting he failed big time with this transfer and Aulas has a huge ego

Such a bizarre way to treat a young player that seemed to be taking his game to the next level last season. Do you see him moving on in the summer?

I wouldn't be surprised tbh. He's a fantastic talent and he will want to play a lot more I'm sure.
It'd have made sense to bench him if Gourcuff was in good form but Pjanic has always played better than him despite the age difference. They're wasting a very interesting young player.

How are Lyon fans reacting to the situation? I've always thought Pjanic was a very exciting midfield prospect, technically gifted and a good passer, could you see him in the Prem?

Since their team has done rather well in the last few months, I think they will not necessarily be bothered by it even if when reading some forums I've seen some saying that Gourcuff should definitely be on the bench.
It's like a cliché to say it but he'd be perfect for Laliga but tbh since more and more small size and technically gifted players are able to perform well in the PL, I don't see why not he wouldn't well in England.Plus he's a fantastic set piece taker, he'd be a good asset in the PL

Yeah I think the notion that a small midfielder can't succeed in the Prem these days is evaporating, I had noticed he takes a nice free-kick. Age old question though, could he play in a 2?

Neat goal by Gourcuff tonight.

Can't help to wonder if Gourcuff was actually only bought so that nobody else would get him as Pjanic was really already at a young age a key player last season. Especially the end.

Buying the best players of your rivals has been Lyon's transfer policy for quite some time now, though Bordeaux wasn't competing for the top spots in the 2nd part of last season anymore. Wonder how long will it take them to sign Gervinho and Sow from Lille.

I just don't get why Puel refuse to use Pjanic and Gourcuff in the same team. His team would be so much more potent.

Puel has been a disappointment in my opinion. He is not able to get the best of Gourcuff either (seems to be improving, though). Thats frustrating, because he is an outstanding player.

But in my eyes, Pjanic is exactly the type of player we would need at Manchester United, and if the situation at Lyon makes him available it could be the best business out there. A player that would could accommodate himself in both 442 and 433.

In my eyes, his potential does not stand back for Wilshere. One and a half year older and not a regular at Lyon, but he is not under the wings of Wenger. We have already seen him dominating and dictating play against some of the best teams and players in the world. His passing, vision and ability to always find space and time on the ball makes him remind me of Scholes. Always makes the right decisions, and is good at timing his runs into the box to. He seems to be tough too, and has the "intensity" you often need in midfield for us.

I can't see us moving for him, but I think he is the type of player we are looking for and need. And the timing seems to be perfect too.

Read in L'Equipe today that Gourcuff is very happy with Lyons new system, 4231, and that he is a lot more comfortable in that system than in 433. No surprise, really. According too himself he feels "locked" in a 433. On the other hand, I feel that a midfielder of his quality should be able to adapt to more than one system.

Was talking in the 'Well we haven't signed a CM' thread last night, and was informed that he's just moved to Roma for a fee rumoured to be about €11m Euros (Source: Here)

Good move for him, one of my favourite players. Really, really wanted United to sign him, and I personally expected him to be sold for much more too. Lyon have lost a good talent there, although I personally don't see why he wasn't played more often anyway. Yes, they had Gourcouff who plays virtually the same role as Pjanic, but he wasn't performing at Lyon last season, yet Pjanic still only saw the odd bit of action off of the bench.

Roma have signed some good players this transfer window, they got knocked out of the Europa League playoffs so they can fully focus on Serie A now. Hopefully Pjanic can get some solid game time (him and De Rossi in the same team is just  ) and start to show some of his class.

I don't get why he didn't get games when he was one of Lyon's best performers over the years. Disastrous from Claude Puel to persist with Gourcuff over him last season.

I've said it elsewhere, but at that price I'm shocked Arsenal weren't in for him. Seems to fit their needs perfectly and also seems like the kind of player Arsene loves to sign.

He joined Lyon for €8m when he was basically unknown and left for €11m two years later? Was he a failure there lately or has something happened that I don't know of?

Gourcuff arrived and took his place, I believe.

Lyon floundered precisely because of their disastrous transfer policy over the past 6 years. They replaced their fabulous players of circa 2004 (Malouda, Essien, Abidal, Juninho) with worse and worse players each time, making a profit off the pitch but not on it

Then it all went tits up when they went astray from that policy to buy Gourcuff out of nowhere and at a silly price, in the dying hours of last year's summer transfer window, which was a perfectly unnecessary purchase of a player that had been god awful for the best part of a year (now make it 2 years)

Selling Pjanic now is daft as well, his value can only go up (still only 21 years old with bags of experience). The only reason he doesn't get games is Lyon's president Aulas' insistence with playing Gourcuff because of the ridiculous price paid for him last year. They don't want to admit they have a flop on their hands

I don't live in France so don't get all of the gossip, so please don't take what I say as the complete truth, but he wasn't getting much gametime in Puel's system. He was also played out of position quite a lot. Maybe he got bored of this and decided he wanted to leave? I don't know much of his reputation in the French media etc so I can't say whether the move was seen as a shock, or if he forced the move etc. Either way, for that price Roma have got a great deal.

This.Puel damaged his Lyon career badly.
@Urbanned: Lyon pushed him to leave because for the first time in a long time the club is in a difficult financial situation (benefits versus expenses mostly). They were ready to sell either him or Gourcuff

I agree mostly (particularly with the purchase of Gourcouff - he's a great player yes, but he was overpriced and hasn't lived up to his hype. Pjanic plays EXACTLY the same role and was already at the club, had a great first season AND could only get better) except for the last point. I wouldn't say he has 'bags' of experience. He's a good player who should slot straight into Roma's first team, but he's been in and out of the Lyon team for over a season because of Gourcouff's arrival. He has good experience internationally with Bosnia (and the odd cap in the CL) but nothing really above that imo.

He's still my favourite overseas player

Pjanic has nearly 150 Ligue 1 games under his bag.

Most English football fans probably view that league as a unnecessary addition of space between the UK and Spain/Italy when flying off to European away games, yet this is the same league that provided some of the best players of every big 4 club over the years (Drogba, Malouda, Evra, the Arsenal clique etc).

The Ligue 1 is a very challenging competition physically, and to have the experience Pjanic has there at only 21 years of age is extremely noteworthy

Oh believe me, I'm not underestimating the strength of Ligue 1. It's a great league with many talents. Maybe I was being unfair, I was comparing his experience with players who wouldn't be the same age. For his age, yes, he has good experience.

Although I must add that many of those 150 appearances were off the bench at Lyon, especially since the arrival of Gourcouff.

Well hopefully the 24 Champions League appearances he also got during that time make up for that nuance. That's twice as many as Wilshere for instance who has twelve.

True. I never understood why he was played as first choice in the CL and not in Ligue 1. Was Gourcouff cup-tied for the entirety of Lyon's CL campaign last season?

He couldn't have been as Bordeaux weren't even in CL, I believe.

No Gourcuff was there. I guess they used the CL group stage games as a consolation prize for Pjanic after he undeservedly lost his slot in the league

Signing Gourcuff for 20m euros (it's a big transfer fee for the french league) was a big mistake by Aulas. The player was already so average at Bordeaux.

In his second season for them I should have precised.Gourcuff did well for Bordeaux the year they won the league but Chamakh, Diarra and Diawara were more important than him that season.

So how's he been doing lately at Roma? I've fallen out of sync with things with Roma lately, but I know they're not doing fantastically. Would've been helped a lot by the dramatic failure of Inter this season though.

How's my lad been getting on? Still tipping him to set the PL alight one day. I've looked into his stats at Roma and see he's been getting some consistant gametime, but he's not setting it alight over there it seems. Could anyone more knowledgeable on these things fill me in with this seasons information on him?

I was never fan of Pjanic eventough he is Bosnian, but he is having good debut at Roma. He was probably one of their best players in first half of the season(if not the best), but then he got injured(he is still sidelined).
I think this is his best season, since I never rated him high while he was at Lyon. Looks like he is settling nice in Serie A.

Nice to hear that he's progressing then. I only seem to hear of De Rossi out of Roma, I figured I would hear if Pjanic was spectatular. What do you reckon of his future, is he likely to move on from Roma?

I disagree, I thought during his first season at Lyon after moving from Metz he looked like a world beater. Then Gourcouff was brought in and his progress stagmated somewhat.
