All those players have Yugoslavian origins, but none of them were actually born in former Yugoslavian territory (with the exception of Marin).

Behrami was, and theres every chance that he would have represented Yugoslavia if it still existed today.

Yeh but they sure as hell didn't get the talent they have from being born in Switzerland..

Manchester City eye Lyon's £5m Bosnian wonderkid Miralem Pjanic

Manchester City are set to make a £5million swoop for Lyon wonderkid Miralem Pjanic.

Mark Hughes will watch the Bosnian midfielder in action when the French side visit Anfield for their Champions League clash with Liverpool in two weeks' time, say The Sun.

But Lyon may reject City's approach in order to gain a higher transfer fee in future. Head coach Claude Pruel revealed the club's policy towards the player when he said: 'The idea is not to sell unless a big offer arrives.'

Skillful midfielder Pjanic said: 'I am happy that other clubs are showing an interest.'

Ukraine v England

The talented youngster ignored interest from Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid to move to Lyon from Metz in 2008.

Pjanic is only 19 but has already made eight international appearances for Bosnia.

Would take him in a heartbeat for £5m

Yeh right, Lyon are notorious for getting every penny they can for their players. Pjanic is their best young talent and is starring for them in the CL. No fecking way is he going for £5 mil.

Not too mention if City are involved it will drive the value up even higher.

They bought him for 8m last year and he has taken over from Juninho as their playmaker this season and has been their best player this season so wont go for a couple of years yet and not for under 20m

That's what i thought, they only just signed him and i was a bit disappointed we didn't try to go for him. They will give him lots of opportunities to shine before finally offloading him for a premium. 5m, havin' a laugh.

You are right about the price, but I can see him move to bigger clubs very soon. Has been very good in the CL in the two games played so far.

Hazard
Gorcouff
Pjanic

This is all too confusing. Especially since we already have Anderson. But even if we did have to go for a midfielder, which one of these 3 would be the best option?

Depends really, if we're planning on going 4-3-3 more often long term then Pjanic would be best, IMO, because he's easier to accommodate in the centre than Gourcouff despite not being at the same level(yet).

If we're going to stay 4-4-2 then Hazard would be best because he's most suited to the wing.

Gourcuff is the most superior player out of the three and the closest the French have gotten to replacing (although this can't happen) Zidane.

I think he could, I don't think that Sir Alex would though. If he bought him I think he'd play him in the middle, but then I don't think we will buy him anyway.

I've got him in my fantasy champions league squad. I'll say no more.

I'm sure he could adapt to that role.

I'm not. He is outstanding in the center, just behind the forward(s), but average on the wing. Even Zidane didn't really played on the left wing. He would have Lizarazu and Roberto Carlos behind him always getting forward and would cut into the center. Back then, after France's show up at the Euro 2004, Platini said that he was wasted on the left. When Zidane came back in Domenech's side, he never played on the left again. I'd say that buying Gourcuff to play him on the wing is like buying Nasri or Rosicky to play them on the left. Oh wait... (there are still good players, but nowhere near the level they had in their former club)

Gourcuff has much more physical abilities than Zidane who had an illness that made him tired faster. Thus I think he could take on his full-back opponent several times in a game with decent explosive power, making him interesting on the wing. Wingers are cutting inside these days so I guess he wouldn't mind toeing the line. However if a team manages to give him enough creative and movement freedom in the centre of the park, that's certainly where his abilities would be best harnessed.

As for Pjanic, this £5m price tag is ludicrous.

Which is what I'm getting at. It worked wonders for REAL. Zizou had a free creative role on the left. That allowed him to come inside and with roles with Raul or go to the opposite flank and with with Figo. Allowing his fullback to come forward.

I was thinking of it because we have Evra and Rooney. i.e a marauding fullback like Carlos and a forward who likes to drift to the left like Raul. Yet lack true magic on the left flank. A reason I've been wanting us to get David Silva. But Gourcuff is a far superior talent to him. So I wondered whether it would be workable.

But I agree Gourcuff is best used centrally.

Nice. Could he be the solution to our lack of consistent wing magic on the left? (once Giggs retires of course)

IMO No. He's a playmaker, a n°10. If Tosic/Obertan/Ljajic don't make it, we'll have to buy a genuine winger. I don't see the point in buying a player not to play him in his best position. He can play on the left in some ligue 1 games against average sides, but i don't see him as a long term replacement for any our wingers.

Fair enough.
I was just thinking of it because natural wingers are a dying breed and are increasingly being replaced with wide playmakers.

I personally hope we get Gourcuff to run our center midfield in the long run in the future.

What a player, more than a prospect, maybe already a world class

Apart from his well taken goal he had a really poor performance.Horrible passing and positioning.
Both goals scored by Lyon against Madrid were scored by their weakest players on the night. He's really far from being world class

True, but showed the other side of his game. Think he ended up being the player who ran the most.

Feck. Was gonna bump this thread to big up my transfer muppet skills.

On a side note, how good are Lyon? We all laughed our arses off at Liverpool getting beaten by them but they were impressive in the group stages IMO and now they've got a really big scalp. I think they might actually be quite decent.

I watched extended highlights last night, and they're okay, but they're no great shakes really. Madrid were very poor, and Lyon exploited their weakness at the back.

I wouldn't be particularly worried if we drew them, in truth.

They've improved a lot since the New Year, more solid at the back and more efficient up front. They're not as good as they were in their glorious years (under Gerrard Houllier and Le Guen) but they play as a team. There is no arrogant and egocentric player anymore in the team (it used to be Benzema and Juninho).
They all work there butts off for each others and that's the best formula in football. They're physically (strength and stamina) strong and that's what destroyed Madrid at the end.
IIRC it's how Liverpool beat Madrid last year, their physical attributes allowed them to have the edge against the spaniards

Real Madrid will probably bid for him in the summer. They want all the players that have or can score against them to be playing for them or be rotting on their bench. Piece of shit club.

the times ive seen him i wasnt impressed.

Now Cesar Delgado seems to be a good lil player very impressed by his performances against Real.
