Michael Oliver

The thing is Di Maria's English isn't good. I still think he shouldn't have sent him off. Funny how Herrera put both hands on the ref yesterday when he got booked and the ref showed some common sense. Mind you it wasn't a yellow anyway. Oliver got it wrong and ruined the game. We still might have lost, but acted a bit too precious
Fairly significant difference in the way they did it though. Players often put their hand(s) on the shoulders and it's not a problem, but Di Maria tapped his back which can (and should) be seen as aggressive.

I wish people would stop mentioning the Hart episode as an argument why Di Maria should've been let off - it was a mistake that Oliver didn't deal with it back then, and I'm sure he was told that (and/or figured it out himself) and he learnt from it. That's what you want refs to do, and he's still young. Regarding Fabregas, it looks quite bad, but given the fact that he has his back turned I think he just thought it was a coming together and didn't realise that Fabregas is extending his arms and pushing him the way he is. It should've been dealt with though, because it's not a natural reaction from Fabregas - if he'd done that on a player it'd be a clear foul. Oliver actually does quite well to stay on his feet though!

Which was exactly my sentiment at the time, Oliver had the right to go by the book and book him but I honestly think a better/more sensible ref would not have done that. Did you see his face when he noticed the shirt tug? Very precious and attention seeking if you ask me.

Yes and had it been some big English player he would not have done that. Hart basically head butted him once and he just meekly went away. What Di Maria did was stupid and perhaps he reightly got sent off but the ref was hell bent on trying to garner attention, brandishing yellow cards for actual fouls on the players.

Good to see some consistency from Oliver... not. Di Maria sent off for a tug on the shirt vs this:

Jesus, bit nasty from Cesc. Seems that to get away with it you need Oliver to be embarrassed enough that he just wants to let it go.

My kid goes during yesterday's game - at least it's not Michael Oliver, he's 8. I actually thought about a season ago he was becoming quite a good ref but, he really is quite shit. Very scared to make the big decisions in a lot of games.

It's funny - what Hart did and what Fabregas would be consider fouls, or even yellow cards, if they did it to another player. Yet when they did it to a ref, he didn't do a thing.

What Di Maria did wouldn't have even been a foul or even acknowledged if he had done it to another player - but to the same ref it's a sending off.

No punishment for Kompany either.

Got a video of that? Just to see it in some context.

He put both hands on his arms and look at Olivers expression. He was wrong to send Di Maria off and he was wrong to let himself be man handled. It's not the first time. It won't be the last with this official.

I don't necessarily think it was wrong to send ADM off, if that was now going to be the position taken. Fact is though that he's made an example of one player and then not followed it up. Therefore, he was wrong to send off ADM.

Kompany wasn't on a yellow either, which to me should make the decision easier. Carding ADM for a suspected dive and then sending him off for the pinch was a huge call. One which i think was fair, but he and every other BPL ref had to continue in the same manner.

Football needs more refs who have the balls and take no sh*t or nonsense from players like Nigel Jones.

I can't believe people actually think Di Maria shouldn't have gotten that card.
He should have definitely got it. But when the same ref fails to send off Hart (which I think is the worse of the 3, it is far more aggressive imo) and Kompany last night people are bound to question and get pissed about the inconsistency

This thread needs to be moved to the transfer forum, he is obviously up for grabs now.

Yeah that's reasonable enough (hart at least, I haven't seen the Kompany incident) but di Maria can't really have any complaints.

He shouldn't have. A tug to get the ref's attention?

The problem is consistency. Rarely I see disrespect towards a referee carded. In my opinion yes Di Maria deserved a card. But then so does Hart, so does Kompany. Consistency is key.

It really is. People wouldn't mind 3-4 red cards a game as long as its consistent. If players knew, laying hands on a ref or disrespecting them means an automatic red it would soon stamp it out.

It still angers me that Rooney got banned for swearing

Did you get up from your computer after writing the first paragraph and did someone else stop by to write the second?

Haha I was thinking the same when I re-read it. What I meant was in comparison to so many other incidents he didn't deserve it. But they should change their attitude towards this behavior and make sure any disrespect towards a referee is given some punishment.

The way Kompany touched Oliver wasn't aggressive whereas di Maria was. But he had an awful game poor Oliver.

My favourite was when Sterling put his hands on Howard Webb and Howard Webbs reaction was great. It was like "WTF do you think youre doing?"

I think common sense is driven out of referees, we know that, but consistency however shouldnt be.

I think it's a bit hard talking about consistency. Really, there aren't that many situations that can be dealt with with absolute consistency, most situations require taking into account the context of the situation and maybe having a subjective view of a certain offence. People talk of 'consistency' as if it's an exact science, which it isn't.

Just ridiculously inconsistent / incompetent.

He needs to be investigated. There's nothing else to say on the matter.

Why is he permitted to be so incompetent? What on earth do they teach referees?

Said it after he sent Smalling and di Maria last year. Hes a fecking cnut and I wish i could punch the shit out of his ugly face.
