Gaming Metal Gear Solid

You deserve a trophy for sitting through those cut scenes.

It is so tedious. I read reviews and honestly thought they were exaggerating. But amazingly it was far, far worse than what was reporting.

You barely need your control pad for 3/4 of the entire game. And most of the action happens in the cut scenes too
.

I stopped gaming for a few years, meaning I missed out on a lot of classics.

I've completed MGS and MGS2 in the last couple of weeks. How anybody can't appreciate this masterpiece of a series is beyond me. I'm starting MGS3 tonight.

I'm with you Elvis, the whole series has been fantastic and I for one will be purchasing the HD collection when it releases.

I remember playing splinter cell a few years after MGS on the PS1 and thinking to myself, it doesn't even compare.

I used to love the bit where you could see the bird in her knickers if you went into the toilet. Oh, to be 9 and horny.

Keep up the good fight Elvis.

People like Randall and Pogue simply don't get it.

MGS4 = a bit shit really.

A long way short of the best game on the PS3, don't own any other consoles but I would say I've enjoyed Tiger Woods golf on a mate's Wii at least ten times as much as sitting through all the tedious, convoluted cut-scenes in MGS4.

At the end of the day, the budget behind these games is almost on a par with Hollywood blockbusters. In a game as cut-scene heavy as this, you should expect the narrative and dialogue to be gripping, exciting and have you on the edge of your seat. Instead, I end up wondering what I'm going to have for dinner and if they will ever just shut the feck up and get on with actually providing some sort of entertainment or meaningful plot progression.

I don't buy the "you had to see the prequels" crap either. Every decent movie franchise features episodes that are very watchable on their own. Even shite franchises (like the latter episodes of the Matrix trilogy) are miles more entertaining than MGS4 cut-scenes.

Best game on the PS3? I would go for Drake's Fortune. More playable, better plot, better script, better voice-acting, more of a genuinely immersive experience and basically a lot more fun. Which is kind of the point of gaming, really.

Pah!

Nearly finished MGS3. I'd forgotten about the Sorrow bit. Just brilliant, I remember first time round it taking me an absolute age to figure out what you had to do.

MGS2 was the most complicated to understand plot wise
MGS3 was the most emotional one specially with The Sorrow and the Boss' death at the end.
MGS4 really underwhelmed me

Also has anyone on here played Peace Walker? Not had a PSP since it's been released so never got around to playing it, so I'm looking forward to that next month.

Kojima Productions hiring for 'the next Metal Gear Solid'
"Big Boss wants you! The next MGS," reads job advertisement on Konami's site

Kojima Productions is staffing up for the next game in the Metal Gear Solid series.

"Big Boss wants you! The next MGS," reads a post on Konami's site advertising a number of jobs, and presumably referring to Metal Gear Solid 5.
Last year, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima said Kojima Productions would "probably have to make" Metal Gear Solid 5 "at some point".

The firm will be at GDC next month on the lookout for engineers, artists, and game creators including:

  • Project engineers for the latest Metal Gear Solid targeted for high-end consoles and PC
  • Engineers to help develop next-gen game engine technology for use with the "FOX Engine.
  • Kojima Productions Brand Manager

I hope it's true. Picking up the HD collection tomorrow so I can finally get around to playing Peace Walker.

I want to feck off and do something differe... actually I don't, I just want to play MGS4 ( I'm as gay for this series as elvis). Wish they'd release it for Xbox.

Because it's a PS1 game and would have to be done totally from scratch.

How about porting the gamecube one? Twin Snakes? Would it be really that hard? I understand that there might be some legal obstacles due to it being made for the Nintendo but surely if they wanted to they could get around this?

It depends what you want, a HD version? MGS can be downloaded from the store and played as is, PS3 can play PS1 games.

Weaste is right. Though it can be emulated and touched up, it wouldn't fit.

Am I forgiven now Weaste?

What's this trick that they've pulled with now quite a lot of PS2 games appearing on the Store? Are they just ISO dumps from the PS2 discs, or have they been fiddled with? Because the PS3s without either the EE or GS still can't play PS2 games off disc, but they can play certain games available on the PS Store? Games that suit the software emulator?

They have it's part of the MGS HD collection which came out a couple of weeks ago.

Ah just noticed it's not MGS 4 but MGS Peace Walker

I haven't actually ever downloaded one, but I pressume they are games they know work with the emulator and update the emu to release more.

I hope they are better at it the M$, I have San Andreas for the 360 and it is prone to crashes out and their response is "oh well we warned you it might". Yeah, cheers for that you brainless hacks!

How does Splinter Cell compare to MGS?

I used to love the MGS games but have never played any of the Splinter Cell series & quite fancy a new covert ops game.

I prefer Splinter Cell, well the earlier ones anyway.

It's horses for courses though, you should try them. I think the best way to describe the difference is SC has it's roots on the PC thus is more serious, more plausible. MGS are more suited to console (obviously), more arcadey to a degree. Both are decent series though, although mgs4 to me was a joke and the last two Splinter Cells are dumbed down heavily for the fps crowd.

Cool, think I'll pop in past my local cash converters on the way home and see if they have any of the earlier games for the 360.

Do you actually 'play' MGS 4?

I thought it was more like a dvd, you know, you watch it till the end of the chapter then press a few buttons and hey presto! Another chapter plays...

This is what I did. I skipped the cut scenes and the game was about 2 hours long.

I have never felt so short changed buying a game as this.

That's like buying an action movie and fast forwarding to all the fight scenes and then complaining that it's only 15 mins long.

I've been waiting for the price of the PS3 collection to come down for a while now, hurry up.

Peace Walker really is a fantastic game.

Also, MGS4 is getting trophy support in August, and Konami are holding a special event on the 30th August for the 25th Anniversery of MGS; there's rumour they'll divulge some information on MGS5.
