Gaming Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain | Use Spoiler Tags for now

I really love this game but it feels like a spin-off, rather then a 'full' Metal Gear game - I'm missing the codec conversations and cut scenes.
I never played the old metal gears but I was looking forward to seeing loads of cutscenes in this. So far I think there's been like 2/3 which is a shame

I just got to a pretty major plot point, not sure where it will go from here but I never thought I would play a Kojima game where I felt it needed more cutscenes, but it does.

Saw a few people complain about that as well. Personnly I was always put off by the cut scenes and codec stuff(although I'm not really a Metal Gear fan)

The end of 2 and a lot of 4 were ridiculous and the self-indulgence of Kojima needed to be curtailed but I think they've gone too far - I think there was a happy medium that (so far) they've not quite right...it's not that it's worse for it (it's probably a better game) but it's not what I'd consider to be a Metal Gear game.

If you've got a PS3/360 (or a Vita) pick up the HD collection and play Snake Eater - it's an incredible game/interactive movie.

Yeah I was thinking of buying it but I've read the whole story yesterday so I knew what was going on in 5. Think i've spoilt it for myself now

I don't think it'll matter that much - reading the whole story would take hours and a lot of it is so convoluted that it's incrompehensible. Experiencing it is totally different - i grew up with the series, so they've never been dated but I suspect it might not be as enjoyable going through them now...saying that I did play through 3 again recently and despite some issues, it holds up.

I think I'm going to get MGS3 and 4 once I finish this. Not sure about 2 as it has that Raiden guy in it

Saw this on neo-gaf:

The poster said he died trying to fulton him out...and now the guy's gone

Not seen anyone with abilities like that so far!
He has better stats than big boss (all A++)

In the deployment bit it lets you click on character...can you play as other people?

2 and 3 are in the same collection, along with Peace Walker (depending on the console). 2 is worth playing too - some issues but a lot of great moments...although 3 is a masterpiece.

I haven't played a lot of the Metal Gear series (Metal Gear 1 is the only one I've finished) so I'm not the best person to say what a Metal Gear game is. But I've always felt that the Big Boss side of the series is a bit of side line in the grand scheme of things(Although story wise they are very important)

Basically what I'm trying to say is unless your Solid Snake it doesn't really seems like a Metal Gear game. Although I do realise they(Big Boss & Snake) both looked exactly the same. Man Kojima likes to feck with people.

You only really play as Solid Snake at his 'peak' in the 1st game and the start of the 2nd (and as Old Snake in the 4th). The 3rd game, Peace a Walker, Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are all Big Boss and even the 4th has a lot of Boss' story in it...given the whole story leads back to Big Boss too and the others are clones, it's more of his story than Solid Snake's.

I get what you're saying though - I thought a similar thing but since Raiden took over in 2, the series has kind of veered away from Solid Snake.

Oh right didn't know that.

Also the Raiden idea in 2 was generally fecking nuts. To a certain degree Kojima deserves some credit just for having the fecking balls to do it(Although I didn't like the game because of it). Can't image anyone else thinking ''well I've got this great character everyone seems invested in and loves but you know what feck that here's blonde guy that no one knows and we'r going pointed how shit he is compared to Snake for the whole duration of the game, also let's add in swimming missions'' There's respect to be had in that level of madness.

Aye...I remember being hugely excited for the 2nd game...I even bought Zone of the Enders just for the demo and magazines that showed all of the hidden things to see in it. The Tanker opening was immense and then Raiden turned up...urgh. I deluded myself the whole game thinking you'd eventually return to being Snake (or Plisken )...little did I know it was the last I'd play as Snake without a grey mullet and moustache .

I'm loving this but it just reminds me how terrible I am at stealth games

I start off every mission with the genuine intention to stealth it completely, though it inevitably turns into a blood bath because I panic and feck up somewhere. I don't think I've ever successfully managed a quiet sweep, not even small outposts.

Though I'm only a few hours in. I'm guessing the stealthing becomes easier once I get another companion besides the horse and when I actually get a suppressed sniper rifle?

I'm nearly 30 hours in and still using the gear I started off with. You can't even take the outposts?! The only tip I can give which I think will help is watch the enemies for a bit with the binoculars so you know where they are going and walk very slowly when taking them down. There's a stealth suit (allows you to crouch run at enemies without them noticing) which you can buy but I find it worse than the starting gear as enemies can see you from a mile off if you crouch or stand.

This is probably the best game I've played in years...pretty lucky that I got it in the post by an accidental preorder as I didn't plan on buying it. A huge shame if this is the last in the series as its just so good!

Jesus Christ........

Played through MGS 4 the last few days....Forgot how emotional it is. The music...............The music.............

Can't wait to get into this

I for one think this game if fecking fantastic. Impeccable gameplay as usual, graphics are sublime with the usual Kojima humour thrown in, found some easter eggs already.

True it isnt as linear as the previous games, but i think its genius that Kojima has realised the current theme in games is going for a free roam approach. People were playing thru MGS multiple times, why do that when you can free roam your way thru shit if you're bored. There's plenty to do, and then you can always resume main missions to progress the story.

If you are an "immerser", head to this website http://metalgeartimeline.com/ and take a few moments to chronologically understand the story (the timeline is without the phantom pains obviously).

Even better, play the games via ROMS in the way they were intended, and you'll have a "holy feck" star wars feeling of epic-ness when stuff is revealed.

So many amazing twists and turns that can only best be experiences by taking a month of work, running through all the games, and coming over to my house and thanking me.

Have been spending time upgrading my gear and MB - Have done through mission 11, and a load of side-ops and love the game more and more each time I play it!

I have most of the MB wings upgraded to level 3, and am in the process of upgrading the Command section of MB to level 4. Most of the divisions are fully staffed, so only Fulton back people with highly-rated abilities I find.

Gear wise, I have fully upgraded my Fulton, so can send vehicles and cargo containers back. This makes some objectives much easier - and also nets you a lot of materials and cash.

What weapons do people use? I have been sticking with the assault rifle you get at the beginning, along with the silenced tranq pistol. I then switch between a sniper or a rocket launcher based on the objective. I have developed the riot smg, so will try that, and last night developed the tranq sniper, so will give that a go this evening.

I know some people are wanting more cutscenes, but I prefer how it is with fewer interruptions. It really does feel open and I love the freedom you have.

Same, except a slightly better assault rifle. The riot smg was rubbish and had terrible accuracy.

Is it possible to get a tranq sniper with a suppressor? Feel like that would almost be cheating.

I love reading spoilers about this game because even after I get told what happens I still have no clue what the feck is going on

lol I can take the outposts just fine, its just that I always botch the stealth aspect, but thats probably habitual since I haven't played a proper stealth game since...MGS4 heh.

I've also just realised what reflex mode is, I didn't realise I had it switched off, but now its so much easier its unreal

First off I'm just going to say that I love this game. But, so far I'm hating the story, or rather I'm hating the lack of cutscenes. I'm not asking for MGS4 levels of footage but they could have done with adding so many of the extra cutscenes into the main missions. Especially the

but where it turns out that Paz is still alive and you find out that the explosion that injured you had nothing to do with her

Seriously; that's a huge moment of the story that can be easily missed!

They were obviously made with care and attention so my theory is that Kojima originally had these cutscenes as part of the main story but then Konami, being the meddling idiots that they are, forced him to make the main story less "movie like" and just stick to the missions, to cater to what Konami incorrectly thinks the general gamer wants - which is just explosions and shit without any narrative.

I did the first a wandering mission (5th one coming up, ugh) and ive no clue when you find this out. Wanna elaborate?

How is that even possible. You need about 200k of each resource to get your MB so advanced. Im on episode 30 and ive still only have 2 or 3 platforms per unit

Im using the original Assault rifle with a silencer and tranq. sniper as my primaries. Tranq. gun and Stun arm for my secondaries. A certain
Quiet
tranquilizing everything in sight.

If its side ops, i dont mind killing. But in main missions, im trying my best to finish them off without kills.

Don't you know where to find a transport specialist? Really want to start to fulton the vehicles away.

Gets a lot easier when you have D Dog unlocked, he tags all the enemies as you crawl through the base. The biggest tip I would say is stay on the floor and crouch all the time.

OK, so I am lying down behind someone and want to take them out. What do I do?

If you are behind him just stand up and grab him or just tranq him, make sure you have a silencer on though.

How do I grab? I pointed a gun at him and he put his gun down. Now I've paused it not knowing what to do other than shoot him which would cause chaos

If you point the gun you can just put the gun down the enemy will stay down. Don't know what system you are playing on but on ps4 you hold down R2 to grab.

If you press L1 you can tell him to lie down. If you want to move him then kick him will he is lying down with r2 which will stun him so you can pick him up.

Then you can place him where you want and kick him again to wake him up and point the gun at him while he is on the floor so he doesn't get back up

How do I grab? I pointed a gun at him and he put his gun down. Now I've paused it not knowing what to do other than shoot him which would cause chaos
Once you have pointed your gun at him and he has his hands up, you can press L1 and then you get different commands - such as interrogate, tell him to lie down etc. If he lies down, then he will stay down unless you set off an alert at the base.

I usually try and sneak up then press R2 when close to grab them. Then you can press L1 and interrogate them, before either killing them or repeatedly pressing R2 to subdue them and then fulton them. If I shoot them with the tranq gun, then I usually carry them somewhere safe, before kicking them when they are on the ground with R2 which wakes them up. Then you can grab them again as they get up and interrogate them.

When I found him he was on of the prisoners in mission 10. I think you can also get one on a later mission also.

I have command being upgraded to level 4, and most of the others to level 3 - think medical is level 2, and animal might just be building level 1 I think.

I extract pretty much everything I can find - and then sell all weapons and some vehicles and plants.

The easiest way to build resources is to keep sending troops out on combat deployments - there is a list of missions they can do - some are mainly cash, others can bring in metals etc. Once they have finished, then you can send them out again.

The other thing I do religiously is as soon as any soldiers join my base, then I check in the staff management and make sure there are no trouble makers - those I dismiss instantly as I can't be arsed with them potentially killing any specialist etc.

Same, except a slightly better assault rifle. The riot smg was rubbish and had terrible accuracy.

Is it possible to get a tranq sniper with a suppressor? Feel like that would almost be cheating.

You can do - am not sure if its one you can research, or whether it is something yo can create once you have the customize weapons option unlocked.

That would make going back on some missions really good fun!!!

I remember Kojima saying his inspiration was Sherlock Holmes. The main man was obviously Solid Snake (Holmes) but the story was told through Raiden (Watson) to get another point of view of the main character. The logic is sound, but he messed up making Raiden a whiny little bitch with pretty boy looks. That was never going to go down well.

Cheers, how do you tell who are the trouble makers? I've got people fighting in my medical department..
