Ozil is a polarizing figure because his ability and inconsistency. He is a 45 minutes half season pass master player.

Mkhi and Mata are invisible anyway. Ozil does tend to disappear, but his ceiling is at an absolutely world class level, the likes of which we haven't had with a pure #10 at this club in recent history.

I did vote no initially when this thread started as I've never really rated him but yeah we're in desperate need for something different than Mata and Mhkitaryan so Ozil on a free now is something I can get behind

Plus you can't argue with his stats

We need someone on the same level as Pogba, in terms of creativity, and Ozil would certainly be that guy.

I personally want us to move to a 433, but if we stick to a 4231, then we will need a number 10, and I can't imagine Jose looking any further than Ozil.

He could also play the Mata role from the right. I want him here so bad.

He was linked with a January move to Barcelona by Mundo Deportivo two days ago, before Evening Standard said Barcelona are yet to approach him

Ozil is one the front page of Catalan paper Mundo Deportivo again (afaik MD are Daily Mail level in reliability)

Will be a big mistake if we miss out on Ozil.

I think the major sticking point for us is that it would signal the end for Miki. A player signed by Jose and also a player he has strongly (and perhaps stubbornly) backed this season. I wonder whether he could be that ruthless with himself. I would essentially be an admittance that a player he purchased has somewhat failed.

Should be in for him. We should always be in the market for players who would be an upgrade. No doubt he is better than Miki and Mata in a number 10 role.

More so the end of Mata.

Anyway, €20m is a bargain if we could get him signed in January. Also not cup tied to CL.

Please, no.
We have enough luxury passers. Why do we need another?

Just buy a right winger and a left back.

Well he was dropped for the weekend so I wouldn't be surprised if he did cut his losses with him... not that it really needs to come to that though, plenty of games and you need a good squad

Not necessarily, as Miki and Ozil are different types of players, even if they play in the same position. In our squad, Mata is the most similar to Ozil and he'd be surely the player leaving if Ozil comes in.

Sign him..we would be crazy not to take him on a free or at the discounted price..

Ozil will be another mane, kdb, aguero or even salah if we pass the oppurtunity. He will give instant impact to the team. Current team set up will suit him more.. with matic and pogba around him and martial/rasfhford on the flank will make us very very dangerous on the break/counter attack.

Either way if Ozil starts then Miki doesnt. And at the moment Miki is behind Mata because he has been atrocious recently.

Again that's not necessarily true. Miki can play anywhere behind the striker (LW, CAM or RW) and for Armenia he even plays in midfield, so he's versatile enough to get game time. Bringing in Ozil would be very good for squad depth, as he would provide the option of a technically better CAM with superior playmaking ability (better than Mata at it), while Miki can play when we need more pace and dribbling through midfield.

This all sounds feasible until you stop and consider how useless Miki has been at the basics of midfield play like decision making, tackling, interceptions, ball retention. He was given a crack at the position that was tailored for him, allowing to attack on the transition and and release our attacking contigent. He was also given opportunitues to break up play and transition but he lost pretty much every micro battle and 50/50 that came his way (over several matches). I want to like Miki and who knows in the future, but he has been so unbelievably abject recently that I would hardly reward him with more responsibility in the middle of the pitch. Tbh it has looked like Jose has been desperate to get one of his marquee signings to work - because objectively speaking he deseves to be sent out on loan. I am sure Jose is confused by his form, but thats Dortmund players for you.

Have we actually been linked to Ozil by any credible sources, or is this all speculation at the moment?

I think the major sticking point is paying €20m for someone with 6 months left on his contract. That's insane business.

Why? Sign him for €20m at 29 years of age. Worse case scenario we'll make money on selling him if it doesn't work out in a 1.5 years time.

Ozil is easily a £40-45m player. I'm sure asking for £20m at age 30-31 with current inflation will be easy.

Would you pay €20m to have Ozil for 6 months.
We simply won't pay that kind of money for him when he's free in 6 months. We are a business and I'm afraid, businessess don't work like that.

Nonsense.

Sometimes a business will throw money at something for the immediate impact. Other times it will string along a debt.

A business will do whatever it thinks is best for it's profitability and strangley enough for Manchester United being good at football is a bit of a must...

We can construction whatever argument we want, I can't see us paying that for a player with six months left.

We are a business and a football club. Pay 20m and a have a top class player with PL experience and someone you can immediately add to your CL squad for this season, I forgot to mention... he always has lots of CL experience and is a World Cup winner.
Pay the money and sign him up!!

That's fair enough.

Neither of us knows for sure, but we are both entitled to our opinions.

He does have form for that though, doesn't he? Kezman comes to mind as do Cuadrado and Salah of course. Jose can be blindly loyal to some players (like Fergie) but (again like Fergie) can also be pretty brutally ruthless in culling.

The question isn't would you pay to have Ozil for 6 more months, but would you pay for him in January so that you're sure you will have him in the summer onwards, nothing says that he'll choose us when he's free next summer.

So that's another point to take into consideration.

Yeah, this. We can’t rely on Ozil to choose us in the summer when he’s free. He could go anywhere.

On January 2nd, he can sign a contract starting in July 2018 so that he can demand a huge salary package or/and a signing bonus.

If he leaves the club in the winter, the purchasing club will have a more limited budget in terms of salary package.

I imagine he'd prefer sunny Barce over rainy Manchester, he seemed more at home in Spain. But I suppose it'll mainly come down to money last contract and all.
